As I said you won't be able to relate to it. In S1 he was a sincere policer officer, who wanted to arrest her. He fails to do so al though he knows she is a murder. They show slightly that he is impressed about how she gets clean. In S2 they show him losing the job and becomes a drunker. Somehow while investing the mission he becomes obsess about her.
