Chapter 9a
TW: Violence
Rathore House,
Karan was reading in his room when Sameer came in.
âKaran, how are you?â
âGood? What are you trying to ask bhai?â
Sameer put his hand over his shoulder, âSomething is troubling you since quite some time. Iâve never seen you this silent and distant before. Tell me, what is it?â
âBhai, Iâm good.â
âChote, you might have grown up but you donât know how to lie.â
âTrust me bhai, Iâm okay.â
âListen kid, you had all the time in the world to tell her about your feelings and you chose the wrong one. Now move on. Also there are other women in the world. She is not the only one.â
âBhai, this is not helping, not at all.â
âMy bad. Why donât you try those dating apps kids use these days?â
âI appreciate your effort but I just need some me time.â
Sameer hugged him, âI love you!â
âSay that to Aisha.â Karan got smacked on his head.

Same afternoon
ETF Records Section
Sameer walked in, locked the door. Neha unlocked her gun, âWhoâs there?â
âMe!â Sameer walked up to her, âWhy are you sitting on the floor?â
She kept her gun aside, âItâs more comfortable as Iâm working on the bottom shelves. Now donât stand on my head Chief, sit down.â
Sameer moved a pile of files and sat down across her, âHow much did you finish? Found anything-â
âItâs been only three days Chief! I have finished browsing and categorizing last yearsâ unsolved cases.â
âThatâs good. Commissioner Sir has given some instructions. You have to find cases similar to Sikanderâs modus operandi and put them separately. But no one should know that you are actually doing this, especially Rawte.â
âWhat?â
âDonât act like you donât know anything.â
âI donât understand. Until our last case at Lonavala, you didnât even believe in the existence of the said person and today you want me to look into his old cases. Wow!â
âWe will talk about that later. Get started.â
âIâm not sure if Iâm the right person-â
âIt is Commissioner Sirâs order. I will give you a list of evidences which will help you mark the cases related to Sikander.â Sameer logged in her laptop, accessed certain confidential files and downloaded a file and showed it to her.
She browsed the file, âWhy is there no picture of him? Like he could be around us and we canât even recognize him, how do we find a person who is just a name which probably is made up?â
âNo one has ever seen him, at least not without his mask. And it is said that anyone who sees his face dies almost immediately. So you are right, there is no way to know who he really is.â
âAlright. But I have some questions for you.â
âCome home for some coffee, I will answer you.â Sameer marched out.
Neha browsed the database, âThis doesnât have half the information I have! I hope this is useful in some way.â
~
Evening,
Neha drove to Vikramâs house in Spring Heights.
âGood evening milady!â Vikram opened the door.
âExcuse me?â
âI thought you would like it.â
âYou canât call me milady. It is reserved for one person only.â
âMyra? I know! Guess what I did today?â
âWhat?â She sat on the couch.
âRead some cheesy love letters of two teenagers! I did not know you were that romantic!â
âDo you have no shame? How could you read something so personal to me?â
âI found a locked box in my cupboard when I was arranging my stuff. I accidentally also found the key and my goodness, the dead flowers and old letters, how could I not spend all day reading them?â
âHow dare you do read my letters?â
âCalm down! I just read a few lines from a letter because I was very curious but it was too cheesy, I did not read others. Tell me why keep it here?â
âTo save it from being burned. My mom was really angry and upset when she saw the letters. She even went on to say that Myra had charmed me and fed my brain with all nonsense. Mom asked Myraâs parents to change her school and made sure we never see each other again.â She looked at the box nostalgically.
âOuch! That hurts! Also a classic love story in the making?â
âWell, we pretend that we never met again but we keep in contact regularly. I have lied to my mom for a very long time. Now itâs just routine. So to keep up the pretence, youâre my boyfriend!â
âHow long do I have to that though?â
âTired already? Donât worry, Iâm tired as well. All this lying is just too much, for once I just wanna be myself. When will people appreciate me for who I am, rather than what I pretend to be?â
âIf you stop pretending-â
âCan we talk about something else?â Neha picked the box and went into the master bedroom, âHas anyone ever written you a love letter?â
âUgh-not really.â
âAw, poor thing, Iâll write you one!â
âNo need. I am fine.â Vikram rolled his eyes
âYou need to see this!â She grabbed two books from the right corner of the bookshelf and pressed the lever. The bookshelf opened into a secret chamber. She turned the lights on and walked in.
âWe set-up our base here.â
Vikram looked around the room, a table, few chairs and three walls were covered with soft-boards, âHow many people know about this room?â
âOne, two..â She counted on her fingers, âFive or seven. Donât worry, no one comes here.â
âAlright. You were saying about some confidential files that you accessed today, whatâs new?â
âBring your laptop, Iâll share the file. Go through it and youâll know. Also make a copy of the file and add the data we have in it.â
âAll of that is your job.â
âNo, itâs our case, both of us are working on it. You canât just-â
âI need solid leads to work on the case, I am not doing your database entry job. And I looked into the contents of the micro-chip, I am not sure about the authenticity of the information. It might be a trap. No one can actually have that detailed information passed on so easy.â
âNow you are doubting my informer? What is wrong with you?â
âInformers feed false information, nothing new. We need to be sure that this DRINKS Beverages Co. is really mixing cocaine in beer.â
âThe information is a hundred percent authentic, I can guarantee that.â
âTomorrow morning I will visit the place, confirm the information and then decide.â
~
Next morning
Neha knocked on Vikramâs bedroom door rather loudly, âWake up princess, the sun is high up in the sky!â
Five minutes later, he came out, âYour mother wakes you up like that?â
âI wish! I am awake since 3 am and youâve been sleeping till 6?â
âNo. I thought you were sleeping, so didnât disturb.â
âSee what all I finished doing, here.â
She opened the secret room, files neatly arranged on the table along with other stationery essentials, and the walls were half-filled with pictures, newspaper clippings and notes. The right wall was titled âVICTIMSâ, left wall âASSOCIATESâ and the central wall had only a picture and some details scribbled around it.
âHow did you get this picture?â
âAfter a lot of effort.â
âI can see why you are so fond of him.â
âNot really. He saved my life one too many times and I owe him that. Nothing much. Before we start, this is for you.â She gave him a paper, âRead now.â
Vikram took the letter.
âThank you for such kind words. But that poem doesnât really fit for me. Iâm not a poet.â Vikram kept the letter in his pocket.
âItâs a metaphor for compassionate human you dumdum!â She slapped his arm, âIâm going to take a nap and then off to ETF with those boring files.â
~
Rawte Mansion,
Arjun was searching for his old diary when he came across an old broken mechanical pencil wrapped in golden tape and he drifted down the memory lane.
âWhat have you done?â 12 year old Arjun shouted.
6 year old Neha looked at him with teary eyes, holding the broken pieces of his mechanical pencil.
Suchitra came in hearing his loud voice, âArjun? What happened?â
âShe broke my pencilâ He whined.
âOh! Neha beta why did you break his pencil?â Suchitra asked softly and lifted Neha in her arms and wiped her tears.
âIt was on the table.. I wanted to see how it .. it works..â Neha said sobbing, âI opened it and.. and then small things fell down..I did not break it..â
âOk, now say sorry to your bhaiya and tell him you will not do it again.â
âSorry bhaiya. Will not do it again.â She said holding her ears.
Arjun crossed his arms and stared at her, âAai, she broke my pencil! It was my favourite pencil. Her sorry wonât fix my pencil.â
âYou are right my child. But it is just a pencil. I you will get a new one. She has said sorry and you should accept it.â Suchitra moved her hand through his hair.
âOkay. Last time you little devil. If you touch my stuff again, I wonât spare you.â
âItsh okie!â She flashed a toothy grin and ran out.
âArjun beta,â Suchitra gave him a glass of water and made him sit beside her, âyou have to be a little more considerate when you talk to your sister. She is very young and curious. You were just the same at her age. I understand it was your favourite pencil but that does not mean you can be rude to your sister, right?â
Arjun nodded slightly.
âBeta, always remember that things are not more important than people. You can always buy new things but people cannot be replaced. Another thing Arjun, if you see that your sister is doing something she should not be doing, you should stop her. But donât shout at her like you did a while back. Explain it nicely and make her understand her mistake. Shouting wonât help anyone.â
âAai, I understand. I will be careful.â
âGood. You should also apologize to Neha, you were very harsh on her.â
âI will.â
Arjun took his phone and called Neha, âGood morning! When are you coming home?â
âMorning!â Neha said in a sleepy voice, âWhat home?â
âYouâre still sleeping? This late?â
âIt was a long night. I am awake now.â
âI will come home when I feel like. See you later, alligator!â She disconnected the call.
âWhat happened?â Vikram asked.
âI donât know what I am doing is right or not. Itâs all so messed up, I canât even..â
âIf you feel right in the heart, do it.â
âThat was very helpful!â She tied her hair in a bun and got up.
~
ETF Records Section
Arjun walked into the records room and saw Neha sitting amidst piles of files, âGoodness, how are you working in such a mess Neha?â
âIt is organised. Why are you here though?â She asked without looking up from the file.
âRathore asked me to check if youâre doing your work, properly.â
She frowned, âCome with a better excuse tomorrow, chief was here 15 minutes ago.â
âYeah..right.. uh..its just that I wanted to say..that..I- I am sorry. I should not have said-â
âI donât wanna talk âbout it. I have a lot of work to do, please excuse me.â
âNeha..â
âSir please. This is a professional space, let it be that way.â
~
Midnight,
DBC Manufacturing Unit
Neha and Vikram were dressed in their black stealth suits, decked with weapons, ready for the raid.
âThere are about 15 people in there. Information is confirmed. We find and destroy the consignment. Iâm taking the right side, cover me from left.â Vikram briefed and sneaked in.
Vikram knocked at the Managerâs cabin. He sat across the manager, put his gun on the table, âWhere is your warehouse?â
âWho are you? How did you get in here? Iâm calling the guards.â The manager picked up his phone but Vikram stuck a knife in his hand.
âDonât waste the precious few minutes you got. Answer my questions and your death will be easy.â Vikram unlocked his gun.
âI donât know anything.â
âDonât waste your time, you have less than five minutes, we have planted bombs in the entire unit.â
âI donât believe you.â
âShowtime.â Vikram said, a few seconds later they heard a blast, âThatâs one of the boiler, soon the others will follow.â
Neha had set up the explosives all over the manufacturing unit and waited for signal. She heard the footsteps approaching. She peeked from the wall and saw a familiar face coming towards her. She muted her earpiece and leaned against the wall.
Aryan saw the shadow on opposite wall and walked up to it. He pulled out his gun but saw the peeking eyes, âWhy didnât you inform me you were coming tonight?â
âI didnât have the time, sorry- please leave before we blow up this place.â
âIâll meet you soon. Something big is being planned, be careful.â Aryan left.
Another man came behind her, she shot him on point blank and hid behind the wall. Vikram came to her shortly after. âWho did you let go?â
âNo one.â
He pinned her against the wall, âI saw a shadow leaving. Donât lie to me.â
âIâm not lyingâ She winced, âThere was no one here.â
He looked in her eyes, âLetâs leave.â
They got into the car and drove past while the building was in flames. Vikram pulled out a diary from his jacket and began reading.
âWhat is in the diary?â Neha looked at him.
âA list of suppliers and distributors, including a written confession. Concentrate on driving.â
âRead out loud, I can drive and listen. Itâs brain mapping.â
âPlease look at the road and drive.â
âYou need not worry, I know where we are going. Itâs called multitasking.â She winked.
âThere is a truck coming at us from the wrong side.â
âThere is a truck coming at us- THEREs a truck- F--k!â She saw the speeding truck, quickly changed the gears, drove in reverse and halted as the truck came across them and dashed into a tree at the side of the road. They got out of the car to look at the damages. âNot a scratch. See I told you, I can-â
He covered her mouth with his palm, âShut up! We almost died.â
âThereâs not a single scratch on your body. You should be thankful that I saved your life.â She shrugged. He pulled out a gun and pointed at her.
âShoot me if you got guts, you coward!â
He shot the bullet right past her ear. She looked flabbergasted.
âI value my life more than anything else.â Vikram blew the top of the gun.
She got into the car and drove away.
âThat went a lot better than expected.â Vikram said to himself and started walking.
10 minutes later she came back and stopped behind him.
âYou want to run over me now?â
âGet in the car. I donât leave my friends stranded on road in the middle of the night. Unlike you, I know how to be nice to my friends.â
âI will not sit with you if youâre driving. Let me drive.â
âThis is my car. I drive it.â
âThen go off, I know the way back.â
She got down and came to him, âOh my god Princess! Stop whining. Get into the car now.â
He moved towards driverâs seat, âI will show you how to drive properly, without getting yourself killed.â
She held his hand, âNo! My Car, I drive.â
He twisted her hand and pressed her against the car, âI donât wish to die in a car accident. Please.â
She tried to hit with her elbow, âLeave me!â
He blocked her blow and locked both her hands behind her back. âDonât try. You canât win me in a fight.â
âI hate you!â
âThe feeling is mutual.â He shoved her in the back seat and drove away.
After a few minutes she jumped to the passenger seat.
âWild-as' biâch!â He cursed under his breath.
She picked the water bottle and drank to her heartâs content. She turned to him with a sweet smile, âHave I told you that you look really cute when youâre angry?â
âNo.â
âThat face is just priceless.â She blew a flying kiss at him and he rolled his eyes.
âDo you know, you are such an amazing person that Iâd kill for you.â
âOkay.â
âDonât hurt my feelings like that! I know you have a heart of gold but it is covered in dust because of some reasons. I can shake that dust away and make your heart shine brighter.â She grinned, âYou know when I smile like this, I make all menâs hearts shatter and they just give it to me.â
âIf youâre saying all of that just so that I will let you drive, not happening.â
âJust for once, let your heart do what it really wants. There is a lot of goodness in life. You canât run from everything âcause it went wrong that one time.â
âStop distracting me. I am driving.â
âIâm also driving you crazy.â
He halted the car, âIf you donât stop now, I shoot you for real.â
She stared out of window, âThere really is no goodness left. Humanity committed suicide.â
They reached home after a long silent drive.
âCome on now, stop sulking.â Vikram opened the door.
âIf you treat me like that, ever again, remember that even I know how to shoot.â
âYou pissed me off, I couldnât-â
âShut up!â

Chapter 9b
TW: Death
Two days later,
Afternoon
Neha was sitting at a corner table with a Subway sandwich when a fair, tall man dressed in a long trench coat walked in and sat next to her.
âHello! Sorry for being late, got stuck in some work.â He said in his deep, husky voice and gave her a bouquet of wild flowers.
âHi Alec!â She looked at the bouquet, âThe flowers are really pretty! Thank you! I was hungry so I ordered already.â
Alec smiled at her, âThatâs fine, but how is eating an entire loaf of bread healthy?â
She frowned, âDon't talk like doc, you're supposed to be the bad guy!â
âPeople think I am a bad man but what have I really done? I never get my hands dirty, I only instruct my people to carry out certain things. Iâm not like those multi-billionaire companies that are killing the nature and call it fair-trade. I donât go around enslaving people to work for me and call it economy. I run a simple business of transportation. I only kill a few assholes here nâ there, more like have them killed, to be precise. I am only helping mother nature by reducing some weight of these useless people. And you still think Iâm bad? Come on!â
Neha had finished eating half of her sub, âThatâs a fair point.â
Alec tucked the strands of her hair behind ear, âYour hair is eating your food!â
âIts alright.â She adjusted her hair to cover her scarred cheek.
âYour scars donât make you ugly. Remember when Atticus wrote, âShe conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings.â I bet he was talking about you.â
âCheesy. Not bad.â
âOkay, what about this- it was her chaos that made her beautiful.â
âNope. Finish eating and then Iâll give you a book, read out real poem from there.â
âAs you wish mademoiselle!â
âWhat is that on your hands?â She pointed at his bruises.
âA kitten was stuck in barbed wire fence and thorny bushes. I got these bruises while saving it.â
âYou saved a kitten? WOW! You never cease to amaze me.â
âYes and you will love this baby!â He fetched a tiny black kitten from his jacket.
âOh my God!! This is the cutest floof Iâve ever seen!â
âKeep it.â
âMe? No. I-â
âI really want you to keep it.â
âAlec, you are so good, man! I canât thank you enough!â She took the kitten.
âYou have helped me in realising that there is still some goodness in me. I had forgotten about it till I met you. You made me see all the wrong that I had been doing all this time. Had it not been you, I would not have realised that I-.. Now I have decided to leave this all and start my life afresh.â
âThatâs a wise choice but donât give me the credit, I havenât done anything. Itâs all you.â
âI have decided that I will wrap up my business and go to some distant country and begin a new life, away from all this bloodshed. I made this empire from scratch and now I want to tear it apart, brick by brick. I will give you all the information you need and you will have your city free from certain crimes. Deal?â
âWhy do you not surrender instead?â
âBecause I know people will have me dead before I open my mouth. I know I can trust you. You wonât abuse the information for any personal gains. You will get a chance to prove that you are a great officer - name and fame.â
She observed his eyes, âNo. I will consider this deal only if you guarantee the safety of my family because working for you will mean making a lot of enemies for myself.â
âYou have my word. No one will harm your family. I guarantee it. If anyone tries, my men will be at guard.â
âSounds good.â
âBut, in case you have second thoughts and decide to double-cross me,â He showed a picture on his phone, âI will reveal his true identity. You are smart enough to know what happens next.â
She saw the picture and felt her blood boiling but took a sharp breath, âWhat if I decline the deal?â
âI donât see a reason to do that. You get to free the city from crime which is your primary goal. It is just being made easy by me. Your family stays safe, thatâs a bonus. What more do you need?â
âRight. But before I tell you my decision, I want you to read a poem from this diary.â She took out a leather diary from her purse and gave it to him.
âYouâve written them?â He flipped through the pages.
âSome of them, others are my favourites, copied in my handwriting.â
âThis is âAedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heavenâ by W. B. Yeatsâ He read the poem and placed diary on table.
âYou are surprisingly good at reading poetry.â She kept the diary in her handbag.
âYes. Things you do to woo the woman you like.â He winked, âI really like you.â
âA lot of people do. Thanks.â
âSo, have you decided?â
âYes. I am in.â She smiled, âHope nothing goes wrong.â
âIt wonât if this remains between the two of us.â
âI can keep a secret.â
âAnd your secret is safe with me.â
Her phone buzzed, âI have to leave now, work calls. See you later.â
âBye!â
~
Evening,
Spring Heights,
âVikram!â She opened the door and walked in.
âHere you are, two days later. Not angry anymore?â Vikram kept his book aside.
âI brought his fingerprints.â She turned away silently putting the fingerprints on the table.
âAre you still upset about the other night?â She looked up and then went back to doing her work.
âIf you think Iâll say sorry then youâre wrong. I wasnât at fault, you were.â
âDonât justify your sh-tty behaviour. It wonât kill you if you say sorry. You have hurt me and I donât take it lightly.â
âYou almost killed us! Emotions are an impediment in our line of work. You canât let your emotions cloud your judgement.â
Neha shook her head and walked in the chamber. She found a box containing a new diary, post-its, highlighters and coloured pens. âFor me?â
âYes.â
She smiled and kept the box away, âI met Alec today. Says he wants to start afresh. Presented me a deal to give all his information in return of safe passage.â
âSounds like an amazing trap.â
âWhat if it is not? See, I get to know about his associates and all the others involved, we track them, put them behind the bars and when itâs time, he also goes to jail. Pitch perfect!â
âHeâs not the type of man to be trusted.â
âI got nothing to lose.â
âThink it through, take your time.â
âIâll talk to Sameer bhai. Hopefully he has answers.â
~
Rathore House
Neha rang the doorbell. Karan opened the door and welcomed her. âHi!â
âHello! Is Samie bro home?â
âYes. Please sit. What would you like to have, tea or coffee?â
âCoffee would do! Thanks.â
Sameer came in, âYouâre early.â
âYep. Could we talk in a private space?â
Sameer took her in the study room, âAsk whatever you want to-â
âBe very honest and tell me, do you really believe that,â she inhaled sharply, âSikander exists?â
âI do.â
âSince when?â
âWhat?â
âHave you always believed or is it a recent development?â
âI always believed there was someone who-â Sameer paused, âbut Iâm still not sure if Sikander is a real person or just an alias.â
âWhy is it that I have been asked to gather the old cases details?â
âItâs confidential but all I can say is orders from higher authorities, not my decision. Even I was surprised as to why are you being asked to do this. You are a bit inexperienced for such an important and difficult case.â
âWell, I canât be as experienced as you, considering your age, Uncle Sam! But I am trained at Scotland Yard and under worldâs best secret agents.â
âYou do realise what is at stake here, Neha. It is not going to be easy.â
âI had a different conversation in mind but perhaps we are not ready for it.â
âWhat is it?â
âThe evening of 2nd August 2012â Neha whispered.
Sameer looked haunted by a ghost from past.
âIâll see you later.â Neha walked out leaving him alone.
~
Later that night,
Rawte Mansion,
Neha knocked the door, âBhaiya, thereâs something I have to say..â
âYesâ Arjun made her sit beside him.
âBhaiya,â She took a deep breath, âI have been trying, really hard, you know. But I â I canât get those words out of my head. You know I really tried to think of other things, but itâs not working. Every time I try to forget it, you come to me with an apology. And I am reminded of it once again.â
âNeha-â
âLet me finish. Bhaiya, honestly, you need to stop apologizing. I understand that you are sorry for whatever you said. But the thing is I canât forget it. I will, someday, eventually be able to forgive you, maybe. But I will never forget what all you said. I tried, you know, to act like everything is normal and tried to think that nothing like that ever happened at all. It didnât work. Honestly, I just want to go on and pretend that this never happened. That is what I am doing, will be doing. Itâs just all so messed up, I donât know what Iâm saying. Do you understand? Itâs all so messed up, I canât even- â She felt a sharp pain in her throat, holding back her tears. She closed her eyes and covered her face with hands to hide her tears.
Arjun patted her back and held her close.
After crying for a while she wiped her tears and looked at him. âI know you are not bad, but not so good either.â
âI donât deserve-â
âI know you love me more than anyone, thatâs all I need.â
âOf course.. I love you my child!â
âI know you do.â
~
A week later,
ETF Conference room,
âOkay! Listen up folks!â Neha announced, âTomorrow is bhaiyaâs birthday and Iâm hosting a small surprise party. So make sure none of you wish him in the morning. Everyone is invited home in the evening but no gifts allowed. Alright?â
âA birthday without gifts? Not fair.â Sakshi pouted.
âAbout that-â Neha took out a handmade card from her file, âWrite something nice for him. I know itâs difficult but yâall sweeties can think of something good. I want you guys to finish this by today evening. And make sure it remains a secret.â
âDone!â The team said in unison.
~
Next morning
Rawte Mansion
The alarm buzzed, Arjun turned it off with his eyes closed.
âArjun! Wake up! Its 10 oâclock!â Roshni pulled the sheets.
âRoshu! Itâs not even 8! Five minutes!â Arjun hid his head in pillow.
Roshni took the pillow, âArjun, itâs your birthday, is this how you want the year to start, sleepyhead?â
Arjun put his arm around her, âThis is how I want it to be!â He was about to kiss her when they heard a baby cry.
âAnu is crying! Let me go!â She tried to escape.
âAai says that kids should cry, it opens their vocal chords.â
âWhatever!â Roshni pushed him and went to check on her baby.
Arjun sighed and went behind her.
âArjun, pass the diaper.â
âGive her to me, Iâll change.â Arjun picked the diaper. She nodded and went into kitchen.
Arjun began changing the diaper, âPrincess, tell me, could you not stay quiet for a few minutes?â
6 month old Arnika yawned loudly. âAre you mocking me?â She chuckled. Arjun pecked her forehead and patted her back, within a few minutes she was asleep. He placed her in the cradle and rocked it gently.
âRoshu!â Arjun walked into kitchen and embraced her, âBefore the kids wake up again, let me have my moment of peace.â Roshni kissed his lips softly.
The alarm buzzed again.
Arjun was combing his hair when Neha barged in, âHola brother! Wish you a very happy birthday!â She placed a tray on the table and hugged him.
âThank you!â He cut the cupcake in half and fed her.
âTastes amazing! Iâm a good chef!â She fed him and smeared the leftover chocolate on his face. âNow open the gift.â She wiped her hands and pulled out her camcorder.
He unwrapped the gift and looked at the handmade journal, âYou made this?â
âObviously!â
He opened the first page, it was a black and white picture of a new-born. A handwritten message below it read- âYou might not be perfect, but are smart, strong and the most reliable person I know.â
He turned the pages, more pictures from his childhood, every picture had a caption, some funny, others meaningful and deep.
âYou gonâ take forever? Flip the pages quick. I donât have an entirety.â
âStop recording.â
âNo, this is treasure! Now flip through, read later.â
âWhy would you select the most embarrassing pictures?â
âYou are an embarrassment, I canât help.â
âShut up!â Arjun turned the next pages with pictures of Roshni and their kids. He gently touched the picture and a tear trickled down his cheek.
âBhaiya?â She wiped off the tear.
âThis is the most beautiful gift Neha. Thank you so much!â
âThereâs more. Wait for it.â She opened her laptop and played a video.
âHello papa!â 4 year old Aryan said cheekily.
âHey dad! âSup?â Arnika joined.
âWe will perform something for you!â Aryan and Arnika said dramatically and made a performance.
âThis is amazing!â
âIt is! Our parents have also sent some message recordings for you!â
âI will watch them later!â
âCool! Enjoy your day! Toodle-oo!â She blew a kiss and walked out.
~
Evening,
Neha was dressed in a pastel pink chiffon ball gown, hair tied in a half up half down manner.
âIs this a theme party?â Vikram asked.
âNo Princess, I havenât worn this dress ever, thought itâd be a good idea.â She wore heels, walked a few steps and stumbled twice.
âDo you really need to wear hee-â Neha tripped over him and before he could balance, they fell on the couch.
âNeha everything is ready-â Karan came in and saw them on the couch, âSorry, Iâll come later.â
âNo! Itâs okâ Neha got up and straightened her dress, âthese heels are terribleâ
âIt doesnât matter, no one will see it!â Vikram grumbled.
âItâs for the Look!â Her black kitten meowed, âEven Nyx agrees!â
âWearing 5 inch high heels and tripping thrice for the Look is stupid.â
Neha rolled her eyes, âKaran, you were saying something?â
âYeah, everything is set, we are waiting for you. Bhai is on his way, will be here in five minutes.â
âCool! What if I wear my Heelys and slide down?â
âNo! NO!â Vikram protested. Neha put on the shoes and hurt her knee at the table corner as she slid past. âNever mind, will wear something else.â
âWhy do you do this yourself?â
âI learn from my mistakes. Thatâs the motto of my life.â
âDid you wear those heels because you wanted to look taller than me strawberry shortcake?â
âCall me strawberry shortcake one more time and I swear-âShe shook her head, âJust get my stilettos from the top right corner.â
âQuit it!â
âMy momma didnât raise no quitterâ
âNot a quitter but surely an idiot.â Vikram chuckled.
She stared at him. They heard the car honking, âHe-ll! Theyâre here! Turn the lights off!â She looked around in darkness and heard faint noises, âF--k! Itâs too dark, is anyone-â
Vikram turned his phone light on, âDonât panic, everything is alright.â
She held his arm and walked towards the hall.
Arjun opened the door and turned on the lights. He found the ETF team waiting for him. The dinner table was beautifully decorated with scented candles, flowers and food.
âNo balloons?â He looked up and saw a large balloon in the centre, filled with confetti.
âI know youâre not five so one balloon would do!â Neha uncovered the cake, âThe cake would be destroyed by the weight of thirty candles, so just one-â
âWhat?â
âSubtle reminder that twenty years later youâll be fifty!â She grinned. Arjun crossed his arms and glared.
âThe candle is melting, blow it. But wait! Make a wish first!â
Arjun closed his eyes momentarily.
âWhat did you wish?â
âThat you keep your mouth shut for rest of the evening.â
âAlright. Iâll do that.â
Arjun blew the candle and cut the cake while everyone sang âHappy birthday to youâ.
They sat at the dinner table.
âThe pasta is delicious!â
âThank you!â Vikram bowed a little with smile.
âWouldnât be possible without me-â
âDonât even talk. You invited me for the party and made me cook this entire time while you couldnât choose what shoes to wear.â
âWhy is no one talking about the cake? I put in so much effort to make it, also burnt my fingers-â
âNo one asked you to do it!â Arjun said.
âI didnât raise you to be an ungrateful child!â
âNo granâma, you didnât!â
Neha was about to pick a piece of pizza but Vikram took it first. Neha pouted, âYouâve stolen a pizza my heart!â
âThere are more pieces.â
âThat was cheesy but youâre grateâ
âNo, please!â Vikram grumbled, âOne more pun and I swear-â
âWhat? You gonâ break up? I thought we were mint to be together.â
âNever mind.â
âNeha, what are you high on?â Sameer asked.
âWeed! I wish! But Iâm completely sober since last thirty two days.â
âI hate to admit that your drunk self is more tolerable than sober one.â
âThat means I can drink now?â
âNo!â
There was a loud thunder rumbling.
âI told you, itâs gonna rain tonight!â Neha smirked.
âYou are not going out in rain.â Arjun stated.
âNo. I will just bring Rocky and Sandy in.â She went out and brought her dogs in, âStay here and donât bother Nyx, alright?â They nodded and she back in the garden.
âWhat are you doing?â
âRitual sacrifice of the season!â She yelled from outside.
âWhatâs that?â
âJumping in puddles of first rain.â

A deserted street
Sikander was strolling when it started raining. He stood under a tree and a few street dogs were barking. He approached the dogs and drove them away. One of the dog was protectively covering a bundle near the large dustbin. He went to take a closer look and found a new born baby crying. The dog barked at him but he took the baby in his arms and walked away with it.
~
Later that night
Neha was sitting in her room near the window, silently sniffling. It was drizzling and little raindrops fell on her with gently blowing breeze.
Vikram sat next to her, âNeha? Are you alright?â
She leaned on his shoulder, âIâve never said this to anyone. My granâma used to say that a womanâs heart should be vast like ocean, holding everything inside. Donât let the ocean spill or it will destroy your little world. I donât care about her stupid advice anymore. Iâll tell you something Iâve never told anyone.â
âGo on, Iâm all ears.â
She took a deep breath, âFive years is a long time, or so I thought. It was my 18th birthday. Maulik had gifted this dress to me, his first design. My bhau had planned a big surprise for me. That evening, I was with my friends, giving them a treat when the news channel flashed news of bhauâs death in an accident. I rushed to his place. I was stunned to see the decorations. Mustâve spent entire night putting it up. There were a lot of people. Then a group of uniformed officers brought in a dead body. They said it was my bhau. Bhaiya had just came in. He tried to see the face but couldnât. It was badly burnt. I happened to glance at the hands and I knew this body wasnât ours. I tried to tell everyone, nobody believed me. They thought I was in shock. I was not. How could I not recognise the hands that taught me how to hold a pen, how to fight. The hands that supported me in everything I did. I came back home. I saw mom and dad were fighting. Mom was screaming at dad. My mom never raised her voice this high, she was screaming at dad, he just sat there, clutching his left shoulder. I called in the ambulance. Dad suffered from a major attack. They performed a surgery, saved him. I spent all night by his side. They say being an adult is not easy. Never knew it would be this hard on day one. Everything was different the next morning. I felt like I aged a hundred years in one night. I didnât cry, I couldnât. I was surrounded by people but Iâve never felt so alone. I never wore this dress but I thought today Iâd wear it and everything will be normal. No. Nothing will ever be normal in my life. Fun fact? Not even I am normal.â She laughed sadly. âFive years may be a long time but it feels like all that happened five minutes ago. Never mind. Thanks for listening, have a good sleep.â She smiled at him and snuggled in her bed.
Vikram looked at the pouring rain.
âMa, baba, good night!â âGood night beta!â 15 year old Vikram went to his room upstairs. It had been raining for past three days. He was barely asleep when he heard his motherâs scream. He sat upright in his bed, his heart pounding and body numb. He heard his fatherâs scream and rushed downstairs. He found both his parents lying in pool of their blood at the doorstep. There was no one around them. Bullets had pierced their vital organs and they died before reaching the hospital.

Chapter 9 a and b
ARjun is trying his best to talk to Neha and sort out the difference after he realised that he is wrong. But Neha is no mood to listen because she is hurt.
Sameer is the only link right now both Arjun and Neha share in the office. Arjun has children?? oh I didn't know about this.. Aryan and Arnika are so cute and lovely đ„°
Neha always has brilliant ideas about everything. She made a journal for Arjun's birthday and even wore the dress she had just locked up somewhere. She is trying to move on. Vikram's parents died a horrible death..
Atlast Neha has got Sikandar's image and I am happy that they do have. Sameer knew about Sikandar or someone who killed Roshni but had no evidence against the matter. Sad!
Thank you for the tag.
And it was a wonderful update loved to read it â€ïž
