Part 2 - Hope
Y'all, I was nervous about posting this one. However, I hope y'all like it! If you don't, please don't throw chappals at me 😭
Giving up didn’t seem like an option for him. He called the college Tejo used to work at. The faculty didn’t answer his questions, but his friend did. “Fateh, Tejo ma’am had transferred a while back” the person on the other end said. Tejo had transferred and he didn’t even know? They really had fallen apart like that?
Fateh took a deep breath. He knew the city Tejo had moved to, but he still needed to find her address, and he was determined that he will find it.
He didn’t have much luck the first time he visited her address, for no one was home. “Maybe she’s at her university, should I go there? No, that’s a bad idea” he had thought.
The first time he found her was on the last evening of summer.
Tejo deleted what she thought was the 10th text message meant for Fateh. She wanted to explain the reasons behind her departure but nothing she wrote seemed enough for her plight.
“Hey Tejo! When did you return from the conference?” Riya, Tejo’s friend asked as she walked up to her friend to give her a hug. “This morning, I was so tired that I slept through the whole day" Tejo said and then asked "how are you, how’s work?” Tejo asked, as they broke the hug. “Woo, it’s been crazy! I'm barely home these days. It's intense, but maybe not as it has been for you! I mean you literally moved to a new city a while back and you had to travel again for a few days” Riya said as she sat beside her friend. Tejo smiled and replied, “no, it’s fine, but how’s everything at home while I was away?” “Good question. You know there’s this man who always waits outside, not sure if he has a friend that lives in this flat, but I’ve seen him outside straight for the past 5 days” Riya replied. Tejo was about to put her phone away when she stopped in her tracks. Could it be? No that can’t be. Why would he be here when he wasn’t even in love with her?
She went near the window and felt as if her heart was going leap out of her chest. Why was Fateh here? She turned towards Riya and softly said, “that’s my husband. I’ll go and talk to him.”
Why did he visit her so many times?
Fateh was outside, hoping someone would open the door this evening. He had asked the building security if Tejo lived here and they had said yes, accompanied with a "ma'am will be home soon." Was his wife even in the city? Much to Fateh's dismay, he didn't have much luck the past few times. Each time he returned home. All he hoped for today was that the security personnel was right. It was a new guy and he had confidently said "Tejo ma'am is home."
He was about to ring the doorbell, when heard the door unlock, and in front of him was standing his wife with a cloud of emotions dawning on her features. At first she was surprised, then she was happy but she immediately masked it. It was so quick and so subtle that unless someone knew her well, they’d miss it.
She didn’t want to speak to him, at least not at the moment. She knew he had questions and she needed to answer him.
Fateh’s smile fell. He knew giving her up wasn’t something he could do. Then again, forcing her to stay with him is definitely not he wanted either. He asked her if he could come in, and she shook her head and said “no.”
Fateh could feel his heart sinking but he wanted to take her home, where she belonged. Maybe she’d go back with him if he earns her confidence again? The nanosecond of joy in her eyes ignited a small ray of hope in his soul.
Tejo then added “It's getting late. I think you should head home Fateh.” Fateh could hear the concern in her voice and further fueled his hope, even if it's just a little bit.
The second time he found her was on a monsoon’s evening. Thankfully it wasn’t raining!
It had been a chaotic day at the university, and recurring thoughts about a man with kind eyes kept her distracted at times. She knew they needed to talk but at the same time, the thought of being in his vicinity made her nervous. He didn’t need to know how she felt about him, considering it had no future. Then again, truth always sets you free. She felt torn. Tejo decided she’d speak to him, sooner than later. Maybe parting ways would be the for the best indeed.
She suddenly heard the doorbell ring, breaking her trail of thoughts. Tejo shook her head and put away the stack of papers. Who could it be at this time? Her roommates were out of town and her friends had left for vacation.
She got up and opened the door. Tejo clutched onto the door frame. It was him.
Fateh’s eyes shone bright at the sight of his wife. He was here to take her home.
Tejo had turned her back on him and said, “it’ll rain soon so you should head back.” Her back was stiff and all Fateh wanted to do was pull her into his arms, but he knew it was too soon for that. “I, I have come to take you home Tejo” he said.
“Home? Can it be my home if the person I’m married to doesn’t love me?” she asked turning around to face him, her resolve was quickly breaking. She mentally cursed herself for blurting it out loud. This wasn’t like her. Running away from problems was so unlike her.
What she wanted vs what the truth was were too different. She asked herself before if she was being too much of an optimist when she found herself hoping that they’d fall in love. Tejo knew that Fateh had moved on, but that doesn’t mean he’d love her, right? The day she realized she was in love with her husband, was the day she felt that she’d be alone in this journey forever. She was torn, because she didn’t want to leave him, but at the same time she knew he couldn’t love her. Not the way she wanted at least.
Tejo could feel her eyes burning, but she promised herself she wouldn’t cry in front of him. Had he come here to take her home because he knows she loves him? That wasn’t enough. Tejo asked herself if she was being greedy. No, she wasn’t. One sided love will kill their relationship no matter what he says.
Fateh’s eyes were clouded with sadness. “Is that what you think?” Fateh softly asked. “That’s the truth Fateh, isn’t it?” she asked, her voice barely audible . “Please go home” she muttered. Then she added “I know you have questions and I will answer them very soon. I promise. Just not tonight.” A lot has happened between them, and part of her was unsure about why he was here. Maybe guilt?
Fateh looked down and slowly turned around to walk away. She’d come home with him. Maybe not today but something told him that she would eventually.
Tejo stared at his retreating form, trying to keep her tears at bay and slowly closed the door. She quietly went upstairs into her room and changed into her pyjamas. She was exhausted. Unfortunately, she couldn’t sleep. An unknown fear crept into her soul. It was about to rain. Had he really left? Will he make it home safely? Had he made it home safely? Was he being stubborn again?
She got up from her bed and groaned. She looked at the clock and sighed. “Maybe I should check just in case” she muttered to herself. So she went near her window and looked outside.
He was still there. Outside. This man! Why didn’t he leave? Didn't he know that he can catch a cold at this rate?!
“Why is he so stubborn?!” she said, a little frustrated. She put her robe on and headed downstairs before proceeding to open the door. “Come in” she said, her voice stern. Fateh’s head perked up to look at his wife, a small smile drawing across his features. He followed her inside without a word.
“You can stay in the guest bedroom” she said, turning around without facing him. “Tejo” he softly called out. “Please hear me out” he said again. She looked up at him and he said “there’s so much I want to tell you,” he started. “I know I messed up. Many times, actually. Yet, you were still there and I’m sorry I couldn’t value that as the way I should’ve” Fateh added.
Tejo searched his eyes and shook her head. She gulped. It was too much. She had already explained that she didn’t want to return at a place where her husband didn’t love her.
Fateh wanted to confess, say that he loved her, and he would do whatever it takes to earn back her trust. Something told him now wasn’t the right time to confess. He needed to explain that he wouldn’t push her away like he did in the past.
Tejo sighed, and said “it’s quite alright Fateh. We both knew that we wouldn’t be the couple people usually expects married couples to be like,” before taking a quick pause to add “anyway, it’s really late. I know you must be tired so please go to bed. You can leave tomorrow, and if you want, I’ll answer your questions too.”
Tejo quickly walked away, if he wanted to discuss this more in depth, they can tomorrow morning. Right now, it all felt too much.
She couldn’t sleep that night. On one hand, she felt guilty for not giving him an answer but on the other hand, she struggled to gather the strength to tell him the truth. Tejo sat on her bed and took a deep breath. “I’ll talk to him tomorrow now that he is here. Whatever the outcome is, I can handle it.”
The next morning, Tejo found her husband in the kitchen, looking for what she believed were cups. Her face broke into a smile before quickly falling. No, now wasn’t the time to be hopeful. As if Fateh could read her presence, he turned around and smiled. “Good morning Tejo, would you like to have a cup of chai?” he asked.
Tejo nodded. “Thanks” she said. Fateh poured two cups of chai and proceeded to keep them on the table, and Tejo followed him. The duo sat facing each other in silence for a few seconds, before Tejo spoke out. “Thanks for the chai, you didn’t have to.” “No, I really wanted to do this” he replied. Then a few minutes of more silence followed.
“I think there are certain things we didn’t discuss last night but I believe we should discuss them” he responded. Tejo looked down at her cup and replied, “I know Fateh. I am so sorry I left suddenly. I know you feel guilty, and I owe you an explanation, so I’ll answer whatever questions you have for me.”
Fateh tilted his head, and asked “why did you leave Tejo?” She gulped, and said, “I left because I understood this relationship won’t work out with one sided love” and looked up at him, before looking down at the cup. She didn’t wait for his reply and continued, “I realized I am in love with you and that realization also brought heartache. I just needed to get away from everything but I promise you that I did plan to tell you everything.”s
“You want to know how I managed to transfer? I learnt about a training program that the principal of my old university suggested I attend, and I took it” she paused and then added “I asked her if transferring to the campus here would be possible and my principal had agreed. I just needed to get away until I could gather my thoughts. So, I transferred here temporarily.”
aid “I left because I understood this relationship won’t work out with one sided love” and looked up at
Fateh was shocked to say the least. He never expected Tejo to fall in love with him. His heart cracked a little more, understanding how much everything must have hurt her. He wanted to hug her and tell her the truth but at the end, he told himself that he needed to allow her to say what she wanted to say.
“You won’t believe how many times I took the phone in my hands to call you but I couldn’t” Tejo said, her voice cracking. Dang it. She promised herself she wouldn’t cry and now it felt like she couldn’t hold back her tears. “I had finally decided to call you on the night I saw you” she said and looked up at him and then away. Tejo continued, “but seeing you at my door just made me realize I was torn. I don’t want to let you go but I’ll because it’s better than a doomed relationship. So it’s best if we call this whole thing off.”
“I had finally decided to call you on the night I saw you” she said and
He looked up at her and asked, shocked. “Call it off?” he asked. She wanted a divorce. He knew that. Fateh could feel his heart sinking to his stomach, and he knew this time it would be different. Tejo’s departure would be something he won’t be able to forget.
“Am I wrong Fateh?” She asked as she looked into his eyes. “We were best friends and we tried to make this relationship work, but were we able to? Was our friendship enough for the relationship to sustain? No right? How long can we go on like this?” she added. “It hurts too much” she said.
“It's ok Fateh. I don’t expect you to love me back. I have a friend who can definitely help me get a divorce lawyer” She said and got up, feeling her heart was breaking into pieces.
Tejo squared her shoulders and was about to turn around when he suddenly asked, “you said you can’t return to a place where your husband doesn’t love you right?” Tejo stopped in her tracks.
She looked up at him. He took her hands in his, a bit hesitant. “I know it must be hard to believe and I don’t expect you to believe me but I, I do love you” he said. Tejo raised her eyebrows. “I don’t mean as a friend Tejo” he softly said. “Finding you was the thing that has happened to me, and I’m so grateful to be able to call you my wife” he added, before pausing. “I’m in love with you, Shadain” he said.
Tejo could feel her eyes water. She searched his eyes, not believing if this really was the truth. How long has she wanted, prayed for to be able to hear those words? Was this really happening? Fateh cupped her face and wiped her tears. “Hard to believe? Believe it Mrs. Virk, because I do love you and I don’t want to let you go” he said.
He placed his forehead against hers. “I’ve come to take you home Tejo” he said, before pulling away to add “should you wish to stay here, I’ll move to this city.” Tejo asked, her voice hoarse “really? You'd do this for me? You love me?”
Fateh nodded. Tejo smiled up at her husband in surprise and joy and said, “I still can't believe this. I prayed for this day wondering if I’d ever get to witness it.” She took her hands in hers and kissed them, before confessing “I love you too Fateh Singh Virk. I’m sorry I took so long to tell you the truth.”
Fateh pulled her into his arms. Tejo wrapped her arms around her husband. “My love, it’s ok. I’m sorry too, for I know I messed up so many times” he said. “I promise, you wouldn’t regret your decision to stay back with me” he said. Tejo looked into his eyes. They spoke of promise and love, and gosh she wanted to dive in.
Home was where her loved ones were. As for her dreams, she was working towards them, everyday little by little, and she knew that with Fateh by her side, there was nothing she couldn’t achieve. Not because she couldn’t do it on her own accord, but we all need a cheerleader and for her, one of them had always been Fateh.
So, she softly smiled at him, her eyes bright for the first time in a while, and Fateh kissed his wife.
Fateh had kept his promise. He showed her everyday how much she meant to him. He told her he loved her through little actions – when he went to drop her off at her college, when he cheered her on during a conference or interview, when he kissed her and when they were alone in their own little world, as the whole world slept.
It had been years since that day. A lot has changed. If anyone asked Fateh what would be one decision that restored peace in their home, it would be removing Nimmo maachi. Gurpreet’s anger towards Tejo had actually started to soften after maachi left, but that was before Tejo had left.
Even Amrik has warmed up to Tejo now. Not that Fateh would have it any other way. He looked at his wife, busy in a game of ludo, who smiled up at him as their eyes met. Fateh walked up to the trio and sat down beside her.
Mahi grinned at the duo and as a response, Fateh softly glared at her. “Oi Amrik, can you drop me off at Nabila’s house? I forgot that we had planned a sleepover.”
Once the duo was alone, Fateh helped Tejo put away everything away.
“You know no ones coming home until tomorrow” he said and smirked at his wife. Tejo chuckled and looked up at him. He slowly cupped his wife’s face in his palms, as he leaned in for a kiss.
Gonna tag some folks now :D
