Not every filmmaker, however, is game to queue up for dates, haggle over remuneration and, even then, put up with inflated egos.
Mahesh Bhatt is one of them. His constant refusal to bow down to the star spangled hierarchy has helped him unearth fresh talent or re-launch gifted hopefuls.
Not so surprisingly, quite a few actors have attained A-list success after working under his direction or banner, Vishesh Films.
His latest offering, Jannat, directed by Kunal Deshmukh, introduces ramp model Sonal Chauhan on big screen. Interestingly, Esha Deol was Bhatt's original choice. She was subsequently replaced by the stunning Sonal.
On that note, Sukanya Verma profiles a bevy of beauties, who made their debut or got a second break after working with the straightforward Bhatt, in his either avatar of director, producer or script-writer.

Bhatt's daughter was still in her teens, during her debut in the tenderly told, Daddy.
Happy to work under her chilled out dad's guidance, Pooja collaborated with him on nearly a dozen films, including hits like Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Sadak, Sir and Zakhm.
Sadly, her career, outside the Bhatt camp, never really took off. Later, the outspoken Piscean floated her own production company, producing films like Tamanna and Jism, only to go the daddy way by turning director with Paap.

If Sridevi had Yash Chopra, Madhuri Dixit was Subhash Ghai's blue-eyed girl. Juhi Chawla, too, found her groove in Mahesh Bhatt capers.
Her infectious spontaneity in the lighthearted comedy, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke fetched the Filmfare trophy for Best Actress -- her first and only.
HHRPK did remarkably well to rocket her career, slowed down by kerchief capers like Bewaffa Se Wafa and Radha Ka Sangam.
Juhi worked with Bhatt again on The Gentleman, Najaayaz and Duplicate.

Sure, Ajnabee was no loser at the box office. Nonetheless, the Abbas-Mustan whodunit did little for this sizzling supermodel-turned-actress.
Luckily, Raaz came to Bipasha's rescue in the nick of time. The horror flick, penned by Mahesh Bhatt, and heavily inspired by Hollywood's What Lies Beneath, was a runaway hit.
It turned Bips into an overnight star, what with her walking away with all the credit. Oddly enough, the Race beauty wasn't inclined to be a part of its sequel. Raaz 2, now, has Jannat girl -- Sonal Chauhan -- stepping into Bipasha's shoes.

Another Hollywood inspired story. Another career relaunched.
Helmed by Anurag Basu, scripted by Bhatt, the desi Unfaithful did wonders for Mallika Sherawat's career.
Till then, known for her minuscule role in Jeena Sirf Merre Liye and 17 kisses in the lame Khwahish, Mallika struck gold with Murder, which primarily centered around her.
A la Bipasha Basu, Mallika stole the thunder from her co-stars (Emraan Hashmi, Ashmit Patel) owing to her sexy lovemaking sequences backed by a tremendous screen presence.

The Basu-Bhatt combo hit the jackpot yet again with Gangster.
The powerful drama gave Bollywood another exceptional talent in the shape of Kangana Ranaut.
Kangana's uninhibited vulnerability and expressive intensity won her every Best Newcomer award in town. Impressed by his find, Bhatt chose her to essay Parveen Babi's character in the semi-autobiographical, Woh Lamhe.

Beauty pageant winners settle for nothing less than a big banner, top director and super co-star.
In that sense, former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen opted for a rather unconventional debut in Dastak.
Ms Sen chose to play herself in this Darr-reminiscent drama directed by Bhatt, which also introduced TV actors Mukul Dev and Sharad Kapoor on celluloid.
Too bad, none clicked.

Tall 'n' thin frames weren't a fad then. Then again, swimming against the tide is second nature to Mahesh Bhatt.
He cast the lanky model Anu Agarwal opposite Rahul Roy of the floppy hair fame to play restless sweethearts in the musical bonanza, Aashiqui.
Anu went on to work with the likes of Mani Ratnam (in Thiruda Thiruda) and Rakesh Roshan (King Uncle) before doing a disappearing act.

Papa Bhatt helmed the script for daughter Pooja's directorial venture, Paap.
The story required a delicate albeit hot-looking small town girl. Dehradun's Udita Goswami fit the bill.
Paap tanked. The slender starlet worked with Bhatt Sr again on Mohit Suri's Zeher, a complete rip-off of Denzel Washington vehicle, Out of Time.

Before making waves on the international scene with the critically acclaimed Water, Lisa Ray made her acting debut for the Bhatts with Kasoor.
The film did reasonably well. Yet, Lisa's sensibilities were far too refined and individualistic to fit into Bollywood's routine.

After helping out Pooja, Bhatt supported wifey Soni in her maiden endeavor, Nazar.
The eminently forgettable chiller thriller featured Pakistani actress Meera in her first Bollywood film.
Nazar is best known for Meera's infamous lip-lock with co-star Ashmit Patel, an act that wasn't particularly well-received, back home.

An already established star down South, Shriya set her eyes on Bollywood with Awaarapan.
The film, produced by the Bhatt brothers -- Mahesh and Mukesh -- was expected to follow the success pattern of Murder and Gangster. Despite a super soundtrack and rave reviews, the collections were a let down.
Next, the Sivaji heroine will be seen in Apoorva Lakhia's Mission Istanbul.

Vidya made a low-profile debut under the Bhatt flagship with a lousy remake of Mark Wahlberg-Reese Witherspoon starrer, Fear.
Heavily panned by critics and rejected by audience, Inteha met with an abysmal fate.
Sincerity personified Vidya didn't have to stay disheartened for too long. Playing hockey for Yash Raj Films' Chak De! India put her back in action.
The Bold and Beautiful Bhatt women You may be forgiven for having only one memory of Rog -- Pooja Bhatt's insipid mystery written by, who else, Daddy dearest. The leggy, light-eyed, South African temptress Ilene Hamann. In spite of all her efforts to entice in seductive swim wear, Rog wasn't contagious enough. |
