RDB's voice adds to that feeling, it has a faraway sound to it, exactly like a rustic boatman would sound!

It's strange though, his dad, Burmanda's voice also has a uniquely rustic quality to it, like I've remarked before, but still father and son are different. Burmanda's voice is more piercing, sharper, and full-bodied while RDB I think is softer.

Wow! You are like a whole walking and talking old classics encyclopaedia. I never knew about all this. I didnt know that it was RDB belting out the Ohhh Manjhi re...

If you don't mind can you put up two comparisons of RDB and SDB?

Main hoon ek khalasi from the movie Sargam (1950) starring Raj Kapoor and Rehana.

This song is a personal favorite. I first heard (and saw) it as a little kid on a TV show and I loved the song and the picturization so much that it has stayed with me all these years! It isn't a famous song at all, probably wasn't even a hit when it was released. The music director C. Ramchandra tasted tremendous success with a later release, Albela that came out in 1951.

This song is unique in its combination of Raj Kapoor and Chitalkar playing back for him. Chitalkar is none other than C. Ramchandra himself, he used this name when he did playback which he often did when he was giving music.

The lyrics by Pyarelal Santoshi are pretty straightforward and just so fun!

Main German na JapaniWink

Afghani na Irani LOL

Na Turk Baluchistani Big smile

na gora Englisstani Tongue

Main prem nagar ka wasi LOL 😉

mera naam hai Bhimpalasi Big smile

Raj Kapoor is so rocking in this song! This was early RK days before he sunk into his Chaplinesque persona, and he looks so suave and handsome here. Plus his dancing skills are to be seen to be believed! He has a natural rhythm that's hard to emulate and his expressions are spot on!❤️ This song has an infectious rhythm that became C. Ramchandra's trademark. You can hear it in Albela's Shola jo bhadke too.

The video is really poor quality but it's the only one I can find! 😒

Tagging you, Madhu since I know your love for Raj Kapoor! 😳

Young Raj Kapoor's hatke jhatka type acting! A regaling performance on a ship deck.!

Thank you Priya for this mood changing song. 🤗

Thank you - these songs are my passion and I would research information on the people that were behind creating these classics laying my hands on every interview, TV show, blog or article that I could find about them! 😃

About RDB and SDB, they are distinctly different. I tried hard to find a rustic RDB song- the ones he sang were usually the rocking Mehbooba types with his trademark 'hoo' in it! 😃

This one is the closest I can find to comparison with SDB ...

If it helps you compare their voices!

Makes sense. I do the same about topics I love. But for music my love is just limited to feeling and soaking in it's essence.

I heard both the songs you posted. Both of their voices have a rustic quality for sure. With RDB I found it a lot more sharper though. Also has a bit of youthful energy to it.

And SDB's very base like but like a softer base. Also has a mature or aged quality to it. I don't know if this is the right terminology but to some extent also a bit folkish.

Now the fact that they are Father and Son is completely coincidental. :)

Strange! I find RDB's voice to be softer 😆. But I agree SDB does sound mature. His voice has a deeper, and more full-bodied feel to it while RDB's is thinner and therefore can be felt as sharper I guess!

I associate RDB more with the rocking club numbers like Piya tu and Duniya mein, so it's harder for me to see it as rustic. SDB's voice is just so unique! I love it! 😭 And 'Wahan kaun hai tera' is simply beautiful. Poignant, plaintive and soul rending - the way he sings it. Just listen to him when he says ...'Aankh kisiki na royi, kahe kisko tu mera?

I cry every time! 😭 So under-rated as a singer and sometimes as a composer too I feel before his more popular son - though I do understand RDB's youthful appeal as well.

@ Bold - Exactly that!

You know to give you an example of what I mean by rustic, take Sukhwinder's voice. His is also kinda rustic...but has quite a few rocking club numbers as well. You know something like that. Btw I love Piya tu and Duniya mai. Ahhhh man what good songs and singing. Has such a cathartic feel to it. And you have have to sing along that too loudly. Gives your soul a good release of some sorts. I'm going to listen to them right away.

I heard this song and probably SDB also for the first time. His voice really is like and elder giving their pearls of wisdom. I'll listen to this one also again.

Since I'm posting fun songs, thought I'd continue with one more! 😉

Tarari Tarari from the movie Dastaan (1950)

Raj Kapoor's pre-Chaplin days (as I like to call them Wink) had him playing suave and sophisticated heroes even though this song still has him in short pants (or are they rolled up? 😆)

This song is again a unique combination for RK: Music by Naushad and playback by Mohd Rafi.

RK swore by Shankar Jaikishen and many of his non-RK production movies also had music by them. And Naushad usually gave music for Dilip Kumar movies or historical ones that suited his style of composing.

Another reason this song stands out is because of its style. Naushad was a fierce traditionalist and his songs were always based on folk music or Indian Classical ragas. He scorned western tunes, so this song is such a huge departure from his usual style! One of the few times Naushad has scored a western tune and that too a waltz!

I talked about Raj Kapoor's innate sense of rhythm earlier and it shows in this dance too. He's a natural and does his steps with ease. Look at his stance when he's waltzing! It's perfect!

Suraiyya, his co-star, was supposedly nervous as she wasn't known to be a dancer and her partner's obviously superior dancing skills made her even more aware of her shortcomings. It must've helped that they were childhood friends and thus were very much at ease with each other as is so obvious in the song. Apparently, RK used to teasingly call Suraiyya "Kallu". LOL They seem to be having so much fun in this song!Embarrassed The expression on RK's face is half-teasing, half-affectionate.

The song itself is a happy, uplifting waltz, so beautifully sung by Rafi and Suraiyya. It does seem strange hearing a voice other than Mukesh's from RK's lips, but this song is just perfect for Rafi. His voice is so darn adaptable and ebbs and flows wonderfully along with the song's tune. The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, Naushad's staple partner, are simple and sweet, befitting the tune.

Kehta hai dil mera chaliye wahan

Har din ho saawan hi saawan jahan

hum tum ho rimjhim ka ek saaz ho

bas teri aur meri aawaaz ho

gaaye mil milke hardam

tararararum tararararum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKoiZEmP6dw

Such a lovely, lovely tune! ❤️(Another RK song for you, Madhu! 😳)

Tagging a few people here - kahan ho bhai sab? 🤔

Thanks Mousy! Phagun does have beautiful songs, O.P. Nayyar's soundtracks are usually so immaculate. It's hard to find a single bad song! If only it was someone other than Bharat Bhushan! 😛

Here's my favorite from Phagun

It's such a lilting tune by OPN and Rafi renders it brilliantly. Asha enhances it simply by her humming! Beautiful song! ❤️
