Since we're talking dances and choreography, I wanted to post this song which is a personal favorite.

'Tumko piya dil diya' from Shikari (1963) sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar, music by G.S.Kohli and lyrics by Farooq Qaiser. I must confess I have never heard of this lyricist. I noticed his name when you posted, Dil lootne wale jadugar, Mousy and then found out he was more active during the late 70s and 80s. He's written about 150 songs, that include the likes of Parasmani and Prince! 😲 I was surprised I didn't know more about him!

The movie is supposed to be a remake of King Kong! 😆🤔

Anyways, this is a beautiful song with Helen and Ragini dancing on screen- both consummate dancers. Though Helen is more of a Western style artist, she keeps up with Ragini who's clearly the more accomplished one with the Indian classical moves. G.S Kohli was O.P Nayyar's assistant and his influence is clearly evident in the arrangement of this song.

There were so many songs in the 50s and 60s with two dancers dancing in sync. I would love it if you guys post some of your favorites. I miss dances like these with a classical/semi-classical base!

Does anyone know who the choreographer is for this song?

E.T.A: Google revealed that it's P.L. Raj

Thanks Madhu for posting this song!

I cried buckets when I watched this movie, Bambai ka Babu, and could never re-watch it because I don't enjoy angsty movies! It's such an unusual story. And Majrooh added the lyric 'Chinnanna' because Suchitra Sen thinks she's singing for her brother (Dev) who's actually impersonating her real brother who he has murdered! The song sounds very Punjabi in style and Asha's voice gives it that flavor too, but it's actually inspired from a Telugu song "Kallakapatam" from the movie Rojulu Marayi, which was incidentally Waheeda Rehman's screen debut! 😲

Bambai ka babu has some beautiful songs by SDB - Deewana Mastana, Chal ri Sajni and Saathi na koi Manzil stand out for me. Rafi is simply heart-rending in the last one as only he can be. Sublime! 😭

Majrooh excels himself with the lyrics

patthar ke aashna mile, patthar ke devta mile

sheeshe ka dil liye jaaun kahaan 😭

Movie: Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi (1966), Music: O P Nayyar, Lyrics: Aziz Kashmiri, Singer: Asha Bhosle, Minoo Purushottam

Beautiful singing. Stunning performance by Helen and Madhumati. Another fine example of OPN's brilliance.

YES! I was hoping someone would post this song! ❤️

Thanks, Mousy! I love the dance by Helen and Madhumati. Madhumati was a talented dancer, but again was overshadowed by being somewhat of a Helen lookalike. Much like Suman Kalyanpur and Lata. Suman could never reach the heights that Lata did, simply because she was cursed with being a sound-alike of a famous, accomplished singer, and in the same time as her. Who will opt for a copy when you have the original?

The only times that Suman rose to fame was during the famous Lata-Rafi fallout when they refused to work with each other. All of Rafi's duets were with Suman!

Madhumati's real name was Hutoxi Reporter, she was from a Parsi family and was apparently trained in several Indian classical dance forms.

Huzoor-e-wala is an incredibly complex tune I think, and speaks of OPN's brilliance. A fitting retort to all those detractors who had labelled him as someone who was good only for 'chirpy' similar sounding tunes based on the rhythm of the horse hoofbeats.

I always wondered how this man was able to reach the heights of fame he did without ever working with the great Lata Mangeshkar. It was almost an unwritten rule in those days that a music director could not make it to the big league without her. It spoke volumes of his ego and pride and a certain degree of stubbornness and loyalty I guess. It's well-known that he had an affair with Asha Bhosle, and ended up making her the voice behind most of his compositions. He even overlooked his staple favorites - Shamshad Begum and Geeta Dutt in favor of Asha B. Their relationship eventually fell apart, and though it's never been overtly stated why OPN and Lata never worked together, it's easy enough to conclude that it was to give Asha a boost over her more popular and better established older sister. It's clear that Asha owes much of her success to OPN's tunes!

It actually annoys me when she comes on some of these reality shows and refuses to acknowledge his contribution, instead always highlighting Pancham. Pancham came much later when she was already established. OPN was the first to boost her, and then SDB to an extent - again when Lata and he had a falling out and didn't work together! 😆

OPN has stated many times on record that Lata's voice was 'dhaage jaise patli' and did not 'suit' his songs. But that's the publicly palatable version of the truth and I call BS on that! 😃

Btw, the guy dancing with the guitar is Manohar Deepak, Madhumati's real-life husband. Does anyone know who choreographed this?

ETA: The choreographer is P.L. Raj again. Cinestaan seems to be the only website that has info on the choreographers of these movies!

It's surprising that with both Mangeshkar sisters at their peak in the 50s and 60s, they barely had a handful of songs together!

Ok, this Blog says there are 47, but the list is populated by later numbers and non-duets too, so yeah!

One reason there aren't too many Lata-Asha duets could be that the genre itself (female duets) wasn't a common one, or perhaps it was because of the inherent 'inequality' that's implied with these songs, where one voice would be for the lead heroine and the other for the sidekick. Knowing the famed rivalry between the two sisters, I wouldn't be too surprised if ego played a role in them choosing not to sing together. It's not too much of a stretch to think so, because even the humble and soft-spoken Mannadey had a problem with 'losing' to Kishore Kumar in the famous 'Ek Chatur Naar'.

So songs like these - that were picturized on dancers, neither of them leads - seemed more befitting to Lata and Asha.

'Jab jab tumhe bhulaya' is a beautiful composition by Madan Mohan with lyrics by Rajinder Kishen from the movie JahanAra (1964).

Lata and Asha songs have a undeniable appeal, the two sisters complement each other perfectly.

Minoo Mumtaz and a very young Aruna Irani execute the Kathak dance moves beautifully, though, IMO, Aruna looks almost incompetent in front of Minoo, but it was early days for her, so I'll give her that. But Minoo's expertise is evident in the way the camera lingers on her more, and the chakkars she performs so deftly. I love the choreography, I love Minoo Mumtaz's dancing. Just watch her dance in "Saaqiya aaj mujhe neend nahi aayegi". And with Kumkum in "Reshmi Salwar". They're both amazing in that one! ❤️

ETA: Meragaana informs me this is in Raag Gara. Again, not sure who the choreographer is. Would be interested to know, if anyone can shed light?

Okay, I found that it's B. Sohanlal, the same dance master that 'married' Saroj Khan when she was 13 and he was 43!

Wikipedia informs me this movie had another song "Kabhi ankhon mein teri" that might be the only song sung by all four sisters- Lata, Asha, Usha and Meena! 😲 But it was neither filmed nor released on disc, and I certainly have never heard it. 😒

I'm on a spree here, so please bear with me! 😳

I wanted to post this song as it's one of my favorites by two of my favorite singers but it just struck me how many unusual things there are about this song!

- It is sung by two men but picturized on two women!

- It's a classical song composed by a man known for his upbeat, peppy and folksy tunes and considered to have no classical training!

- Its lyrics are by an Urdu poet and in Shuddh Hindi!

- And this is a bit of a stretch, but it's based on a raag rarely heard in Hindi film music. In fact, I know of only one other song (and a half song) based on it.

Tu hai mera prem devta, from the movie Kalpana (1960) with music by none other than O.P. Nayyar and lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi, sung by the brilliant Rafi and the incomparable Mannadey.

In fact, I think it's a stroke of genius to have two men singing this song instead of two women although that would be the logical choice since it's picturized on the famed Travancore sisters - Padmini and Ragini.

The camaraderie between the dancers is clearly visible, as the sisters feed off each other with their exemplary dance moves and 'compete'- one representing Gauri and the other Ganga - to mesmerize Shankar Bhagwan with their 'kala'. In fact, at one point, one of them is shown to be literally floating in the air! The dancing continues well up to 5 minutes after the song is done!

But what stands out more for me is the camaraderie between the two playback artists - Rafi and Mannada. Mannada has never hidden his admiration of Rafi saying that if there were a top ten of male singers, Rafi would occupy all ten spots! And that he would feel offended if a music director chose another singer over him, but never when they chose Rafi because Rafi could do what others could not. Rafi on his part was equally effusive about his accomplished colleague saying, "Duniya mere gaane sunti hai, par main sirf Mannada ke gaane sunta hoon!"

This song blends their voices exquisitely, with one taking off where the other leaves off and the effect is quite simply stunning.

And this raag (Lalit) is so just beautiful! Naushad's "Ek Shahenshah ne banwake haseen TajMahal" is also based on this raag, and so is the mukhda of "Raina beeti jaaye". If anyone knows of any other song based on this raag, please let me know or post it here!
