Chapter 11
Shaurya reached the school and as per his normal routine he went to Mr. Sharma's room but remembering Anokhi will come there in a bit he decided to leave!!
As soon as he came out of the room he met Anokhi. She wished him Good Morning but he couldn't say anything, so he just nodded his head and walked away sadly, leaving Anokhi confused! His own action was giving him pain, he could feel he was hurting her and punishing her for no fault of her.
Anokhi's heart skipped a beat seeing his aloof behavior. 'What is the matter with him? Why is he behaving strangely with me? Did I do something to make him mad?? Seems like he doesn't even want to see my face. He didn't even look at me, forget about smiling or greeting me. He didn’t even talk about the science fair project this whole week? Only two days are left...he had said we will clean and repaint it in the last week before the science fair but half a week is already gone and we haven't even looked at the model. What is going on??? Should I ask him what the matter is? No no he might not like it if I ask?? Oh this is so frustrating, what should I do?' Anokhi felt like she was walking on eggshells around him. Couldn't decide how to behave or if she should ask something or not.
Shaurya felt like someone had put a big stone on his heart. He was having a hard time with his own decision. 'I have to ask her to leave the project today, but what reason will I give?? How will I do this?? She has worked so hard for this project. I even insisted that she prepare for the presentation. She probably wouldn't have slept that night in fear of presentation and after all her hard work she finally got ready for the project and now I have to tell her you can't be part of this project any longer. How could I break her heart like that. She is so excited for the science fair... how can I be this ruthless with her.' Suddenly this realization made him panic and his heart shivered inside... 'What will be her reaction?? OMG!! how will I do this?? I don't want to hurt her!! Help me GOD please!'
Soon It was time for Anokhi's class to come. His eyes were at the door waiting for Anokhi with fear. His feet were feeling numb. He heard students' sounds and suddenly his heart started to flutter with the speed of a bullet train.
During the class Shaurya again didn't look at Anokhi or talk to her. He had no courage left to see in her eyes, his own decision was making him feel sad and a hell of a lot guilty.
Anokhi was totally confused about his behavior and she was too scared to ask him about it. His ignorance was hurting her heart unknowingly. She was used to being his favorite student and that was her pride and this sudden change shook Anokhi.
After the period finished Anokhi left first as she sat near the door. She was feeling restless but couldn't understand why she was so restless.
Shaurya stopped Gurvinder and asked him to come and work on the project in 6th period as that is his free period!
Gurvinder said okay and left!!
During the 5th period
Gurvinder came to Anokhi "Hey Anokhi! Since this is our free period let's go and work on the model. Sir had asked me to come in 6th period as he can come then but we can go now and he can join us in the next period!"
Anokhi thought sadly 'Why did he not say anything to me?? Now I am sure he is mad at me.'
Anokhi to Gurvinder "When did Sir ask you to come in 6th period??"
"In the morning, when I was coming back from the lab!!" Gurvinder disclosed.
"But he didn't say anything to me." She replied in disbelief.
"Maybe because you had already left by then, anyway how does it matter...let's just go!" Gurvinder insisted.
Anokhi didn’t feel right about it and thought 'I don't feel good about this...I have a bad feeling, really bad feeling about this. He is already mad at me for something, which I don't even know anything about and then he didn't ask me to come, what if he got more mad if I went??'
Thinking all this Anokhi told Gurvinder "Uh if he asked to come in the next period then we will go in the next period, we shouldn't go on our own!"
"Arre yaar come na, nothing will happen. Sir won't say anything."
"No, I'm not coming!" She firmly denied. She didn't want him to get more upset with her than he already was.
"Ok fine. Let's go to the lab first, take his permission and then we'll go work on the model." Gurvinder convinced her.
Seeing how she was unable to convince Gurvinder, she went along with him to the lab while feeling scared and having a bad gut feeling.
When they reached the lab, outside they met a junior computer teacher who was standing outside the lab! He was Raja's teacher and knew Anokhi as well! He started talking to Anokhi.
A couple minutes later Gurvinder said "I will go in and get the permission slip."
Anokhi nodded her head in positive and he went in while she talked to the other teacher!
After he came back with the permission slip he told Anokhi that Sir said he will join us in the next period.
Then they both went to the store room and asked the store room keeper for the key of the room where all the models were kept!
He checked their permission slip and opened the lock of the room where the models were kept and left both Anokhi and Gurvinder there!!
They started working on the model. Soon the period got over. Now Anokhi was scared thinking how Shaurya Sir will behave as soon he will be coming there!!
A few minutes later someone walked in the room. Anokhi looked up thinking it was Shaurya but she was surprised to see it was not Shaurya but the Principal!
In computer lab
Shaurya was getting ready to go to the model room thinking. His mind was filled with the same thoughts of what will happen? And how will it happen? His mind started to make up plots... it's good Anokhi herself didn't come along with Gurvinder, now all I need to do is ask her to leave the project, maybe in the next period I will ask her when I go to her class as substitute teacher!
Outside Model Room
Principal with an extremely angry tone asked both, "What are you doing here?"
Anokhi, seeing her mad, almost shivered and in low tone she said "Mam we were getting the model ready for next week's science fair!"
Principal with the same angry tone "With whose permission??"
Gurvinder in calm tone said "Mam, Shaurya sir has given permission" Then he showed the permission slip!
Principal cooled down a little bit but asked in a questioning tone "Why is he not here with you two??"
"Mam he said he will join us, he should be on his way!!" Gurvinder replied.
Principal called the store room keeper and asked him to call Shaurya immediately! She was mad thinking why Shaurya left a girl and a boy in a room all alone!
In the meantime he went to call Shaurya, the Principal again started scolding Anokhi.
Principal with a sarcastic tone asked "How can you stay in a room alone with a boy like this?? You shouldn't be doing this?? This is a school, do you come here to study or to be with boys??"
Hearing her accusations Anokhi had tears in her eyes and she started saying "Mam you are thinking wrong, we were only working on the model."
But she refused to pay any heed to her, in fact she started saying "Shaurya should not have left you here like this, he should also be here with you!!"
Seeing her mad at Shaurya too, Anokhi got even more scared.
Anokhi's fear increased, thinking 'Now what will happen?? Sir was already mad at me and now this. She started to curse herself to put him in this situation. Why did I ignore my gut feeling? This is all my fault. I shouldn't have come. Now I am in big trouble.'
This big accusation from the Principal gave Anokhi a shiver. But she somehow managed to hold her tears in her eyes.
Outside computer lab
Shaurya was putting his shoes on when the storeroom keeper came to him and said "Sir the Principal Mam is calling you, cone quickly." He was breathless and panting.
Shaurya saw him panting and confusingly asked "What's the matter??"
The guy with a fearful tone "Sir Principal Mam is scolding two of your students, the ones that were working on the model. She even scolded me, why did I leave them alone in the room?"
Shaurya with surprise asked "Two students??"
He thought to himself ' But I only gave permission to Gurvinder.' Suddenly it dawned on him that the other student must be Anokhi. He got scared for Anokhi and frantically ran towards them!!
As soon as he reached there he saw the Principal scolding Anokhi and Gurvinder! Anokhi and Gurvinder, both were face down listening to Principal. Both were almost trembling in fear. He felt really guilty for being late in reaching there!
Shaurya in a hasty voice called out "Mam!"
Principal without listening to Shaurya, started to scold him "Shaurya, how can you leave students alone in a room like this. You know that last week only we caught two students doing……" She stopped in the middle of her sentence purposely and didn't finish what she was about to say as Anokhi and Gurvinder were there!
She asked them both to go back to their class!
Shaurya felt really bad seeing tears in Anokhi's eyes and total shock on her face hearing what the Principal was saying.
She left quietly from there without even looking at Shaurya. She was already scared of him and on top of that this happened!
While Shaurya talked to the Principal he looked with so much guilt towards Anokhi who was leaving from there!
Anokhi and Gurvinder reached the class and sat quietly!
Reema looked at Anokhi and sensed she was tense and flushed with fear! Her face had no color.
Reema whispered "What happened??"
Without looking at Reema, Anokhi replied "Nothing!" She answered as calmly as she could. She was too tense thinking what would happen now! Her mind was making so many scenarios of what could happen and none of them were good or ended well for her. With each scenario her fear and anxiety were skyrocketing.
A few minutes later the period was over but before she could talk to Reema, Shaurya walked in their class. He saw her sitting quietly, her face was showing extreme fear. He called Anokhi aside and asked her "What happened?? When did you go there??"
Anokhi with a shaky voice and scared face told him "Sir we were working on the model and suddenly Principal mam came and started scolding and screaming at us that what we were doing alone in the room, then she misunderstood us, she thought…." She couldn't even say it. "Sir I am telling the truth, we were only working on the model, please trust me sir, we were not doing anything wrong. We told the principal mam that we got permission from you and then she called you. We didn't do anything wrong. Please believe me." With each word out, she became more and more hysterical.
Shaurya sensing her fear tried to calm her down and said to Anokhi "It's okay I have talked to her, don't worry! Everything is fine." Then he questioned "But when exactly did you go there?"
Anokhi, still nervous, in a low tone replied "In 5th period with Gurvinder!"
"But you were not there when he came to ask permission from me?" He asked, feeling confused.
Anokhi with an innocent tone replied "Oh sir, I was! I was outside with…."
Before she could continue he cut her off with another question. "Why didn't you come in with him??"
"I met Mr. Singh, outside the lab and he was talking to me so Gurvinder said he will go and get permission for both of us." Anokhi explained.
Shaurya with a regretful tone "He didn't tell me you were with him."
Anokhi looked at him in shock!
"I would have come if I knew you were there too."
Anokhi was so shaken and scared thinking what will happen next she couldn't say anything.
Seeing her shocked expressions, Shaurya tried to calm her by saying "It's okay, don't worry...nothing will happen! I'll take care of it. Now go sit and don't mention this to anyone!"
Anokhi nodded her head and went back to her seat! She was so upset and disturbed with what happened. She just sat quietly the rest of the 2 periods and then went home all tense.
When Anokhi reached home her cousin who lived next door saw her all pale, tense and lost.
She asked "What happened to you??"
Anokhi tried to behave normal and replied "Nothing di!"
Her Cousin insisted and asked her again "Something surely has happened, you look like you have seen a ghost. What is the matter?"
Anokhi sighed and decided to tell her what all happened in the school. She needed to confide in someone and get it off her chest.
"It's okay Anokhi, it was just a misunderstanding and anyway as you said your teacher has already talked to the Principal about it so why are you so worried?" Her cousin tried to be supportive and calm her.
Anokhi hugged her as tears flowed down her eyes which she was holding inside her for so long.
Anokhi while sobbing "Di I was so scared and the things Principal Mam was saying were so unnerving, I didn't know what would happen...what action would she take against me?"
Her cousin hugged her while saying "I can imagine what you must have felt but don't cry, everything is fine now, you are okay! Don't cry for something that didn't happen, your sir has already talked and cleared things with the Principal, right? Stop crying and worrying."
"Yes that is what he said to me but I don't know exactly what they talked about. You are right though, I feel much better now, thank you didi for being there for me!" She felt much relaxed after crying out loud.
At Shaurya's House in the evening
Shaurya thinking about what happened in the school.
'It's all my fault, Anokhi would not have been in trouble if I was not busy trying to fight myself, if I would have been there with them. If only I had been a few minutes early.' he sighed in frustration.
'Now what should I do?? If I ask her to leave the project now, she will think I'm doing it because of what happened today and she will feel even more hurt, she was already in tears today...all thanks to me. I have already hurt her by not talking to her all week and I can't kick her out from the project now, especially after what she had to go through today because of me...not now...not anymore, that plan will not work anymore... but if I go with her to the fair, will I be able to stay away from her?? Not talk to her?? Doesn't seem likely.' He shook his head in frustration.
'Though one thing is sure that it won't be as hurtful as seeing tears in her eyes.' He helplessly closed his eyes and saw her tearful eyes from earlier.
'What are you doing GOD? I asked for your help...help to show me the right path and yet I'm finding myself more confused than before...what should I do? What are you trying to tell me??'
Finally, He decided to behave as normal as possible and lock his feelings deep inside his heart.
Thursday Morning after comp. science period
Anokhi felt surprised. 'He seems fine today, just like before...smiling and looking...he even stopped me and asked how I'm doing and if I'm ready to go to the fair on Monday. I wanted to ask what he told Principal mam or rather what she said to him but I don't want to ruin his good mood & get myself in trouble again.' She decided to not ask anything!
Soon the day passed and seeing him behave normal she was happy and relaxed, all the anxiety from the previous day's happenings was gone!
During the last period as Anokhi was going back to her class from the restroom one of the teachers called her from behind...
Teacher sounded very rude "Hey you!"
Anokhi with a confused look "Yes mam!"
The Teacher started to yell at her "Aren't you ashamed of yourself??"
Anokhi looked at her with her mouth open in horror and clueless as to what she was referring to.
Teacher gave her a disgusting look and with an angry tone continued "Don't give me this innocent look...I know what happened yesterday...I saw it when you were found with a boy in that room, I was in the class opposite that room! I saw everything."
Anokhi tried to defend herself "But mam I wasn't doing anything wrong. We were just working on the project for next week's science fair!"
Teacher scoffed at Anokhi "I very well know what was going on...how come you still came to school? Didn't Principal mam call your parents??"
Anokhi nodded in a no with tears in her eyes, all her fears from yesterday came back to haunt her and suddenly she felt pale and numb.
Teacher rudely gave her an angry stare and said "Well if she hasn't then soon she will. What were you thinking?? Do you know what it will do to your reputation?? How will your parents feel about this??"
Listening to all this Anokhi just went numb and didn't hear what else the teacher said to her...soon the bell rang and it was time to go home...Anokhi picked up her stuff and left!
She reached home all lost and scared out of her wits. Her cousin was waiting for her with the house keys that Rama had left for Anokhi as she had to go back to the boutique for some urgent work!
She looked at Anokhi with concern and asked her what happened??
Anokhi asked with a dull look and low tone "Where is Mumma?"
"She had to go back but tell me what is the matter with you??" Her Didi asked.
Anokhi started crying profusely while she told what all happened and what all the teacher said to her.
After hearing everything she felt angry. "How is this possible?? Didn't your sir tell you he has talked to the principal and all is okay??"
Anokhi spoke while sobbing "Yes he did but what if she calls Mumma….." She couldn't finish...as her words got stuck in her throat.
"Why didn't you tell your Sir about this?"
Anokhi said in a sad tone "It all happened just before school finished so I couldn't tell him anything. You think I should?? He will be coming home for tuition in the evening."
"Absolutely! Ask him what is going on and tell him what that teacher said to you...this is ridiculous!!"
Anokhi with a confusing tone "What should I say??"
"Tell him exactly what that teacher said to you and ask him what is going on?"
Anokhi thinking 'Will I be able to tell him?? What will be his reaction?? Does he also think I was…' Her chain of thought got broken as didi came back with water for her and asked her to stop crying and eat something.
"I don't feel like eating... I have a headache. I want to take a nap. Will you wake me up around 4:15 or so? I will eat then & get ready for tuition."
"Okay sure! You rest, I will come back at 4.15. "
Anokhi was lying down and thinking how she would tell him as Jassi, Meenu and Niti will also be there. While thinking she fell asleep.
At 4.15 her cousin came to wake her up. "Anu….Anu wake up beta, wake up! How is your headache? I will warm up your lunch while you freshen up, be fast, you don't have much time!"
"Hmmm my headache is better, di. You go, I'm coming!!"
Soon she ate and was ready and waiting for Shaurya.
Everyone arrived and after tuition as Shaurya was leaving...
"Uh uh Sir can we go over the presentation please!!" She asked Shaurya.
Shaurya got extremely surprised hearing this, 'she wants to do the presentation?? Did I hear right??' He thought to himself.
"Oookay sure! Do you have any questions?" He was baffled.
"Uh yes I do!"
Shaurya sat back down and they both went over the presentation as Jassi, Meenu and Niti were still there copying today's lesson from Anokhi's register!
Anokhi was lost thinking about how she would tell him, what she would say and wasn't paying attention to Shaurya as he went over the presentation. He also noticed her distracted and looking at the girls.
Shaurya thinking 'Something is bothering her, but what? She has been distracted ever since I came today...I wonder what the matter is and why she stopped me?!! Something is definitely not right...but what?' He wondered.
Soon the girls were done copying and were ready to leave...they looked at Shaurya who quickly said they can leave...after they left Shaurya asked "Anokhi what's the matter? What's going on?"
Anokhi couldn't get the courage to say anything...she was scared of what he would think or say after she tells him. At the last moment she decided not to say anything. She just couldn't bring herself to tell him. She was too scared of his reaction.
"Uhh nothing Sir!" She didn't meet his eyes while replying.
"Are you okay?" He asked, getting restless, seeing her behave oddly.
"Huh! Oh yyy yes I'm fine?" She stuttered and it came more as a question rather than a statement.
"Are you sure?" He asked again. He could clearly tell something was off.
"Y y yes!" She didn't sound convincing at all.
"Okay, do you have any other questions? Or something else to say??" He tried to pry.
"No." Anokhi felt frustrated with herself for not being able to speak up about the problem.
"Okay" Shaurya replied but then thought 'Should I pressure her to tell what's going on? Maybe I'm imagining...Maybe she doesn't have anything to say...but my gut feeling says otherwise.
"Then should I go?" He asked Anokhi to give her another chance to speak up.
"Hmmm" She nodded her head.
He stood up to leave.
'Ugghhh why am I not able to say anything? I stopped him so I could tell him and now suddenly I'm not able to.
Shaurya reached the door of the room to leave.
