Lootera is supposedly based on O' Henry's The Last Leaf, but the director has given the film his own unique touch and artistic sensibility. I think this film is a masterpiece and was easily the best Bollywood film of 2013. The love story, drenched in colours in the first half, takes a sombre turn in the second half. Paakhi played by Sonakshi is a strong-willed yet emotional girl and Varun played by Ranveer is a conman who unwittingly falls in love. Both career-best performances by Ranveer and Sonakshi, I however think the film belonged to Sonakshi more than Ranveer. Sonakshi was absolutely mesmerising in this one!

The music is one of the best parts of the film. Amit Trivedi's music is atmospheric and absolutely blends into the storytelling so well. I loved the songs Zinda and Sawaar Loon the best.

I watched it for the second time and loved it. It has so many nuances and artistic touches which makes it a sumptuous feast for the senses. I feel bad that it underperformed, but then again, it's not for everyone.A bit like October, the pace is slow but it's completely riveting and draws you in.

Have you watched the movie?

This and Guzaarish. I loved watching them but I don't think I can re-visit them anytime soon. Too depressing.

I remember Sonakshi felt bad when she didn't get any award for the movie.

She was amazing in it and deserved all awards that year. Unfortunately, it was Deepika's landmark year and she won best actress for Ram Leela where she gave a totally ordinary performance.

No wonder Sonakshi went back to doing those flowerpot roles in mindless masala movies after that because she realized no one really cares about acting unless it's in a blockbuster movie.

I watched the movie, many times and still keep watching it every now and then - if not the whole at least the song videos or some favorite scenes. And that’s the beauty of such artistic masterpieces- they make every watch a satisfying one with their unexplored nuances.

I liked the ending though and don’t find it depressing because I like it when criminals, like Varun, get punished. I made up my own interpretation that he is going to meet Pakhi up there ,where he is rid of all his sins and she is rid of her disease , and they both are going to have their happily ever after.

I for one don't think it is a great film, it resorts to quite a few cliches imo and climax was not very satisfying for me, almost like they suddenly wanted a conventional ending. It should have been an open end imo.

But the movie is beautifully told, I love the meditative slow pace and breathtaking cinematography, those hills and that beautiful haveli. Wow. It also has some of the most romantic moments, esp the one in the car and the one after that. I was in love. I wish the movie was consistent like this. But regardless, it is a good movie and can be watched multiple times for it.
