The title of my post today, has been borrowed from a fantastic TEDx webinar, by eminent psychologist Ethan Kross, that I had the privilege of attending, yesterday (although in a completely different context)
Couldn't think of a more apt title to encapsulate this week's proceedings....
This week has also been about perspectives....myriad shades of it....
As the famous British writer, C.S. Lewis once said, "What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are."
What better way to put across the display of character that some did, and some quite didn't, in Imlie, this week...
First up, Rupi di....she comes from a place of pain, herself....the freshness of her response....her pain has not embittered her....on the contrary, has made her more empathetic....a beautiful example of "power of the inner voice"....
Next in line, Aditya....the man has commited blunders....of the worst kind, to put it mildly!
But he displayed some fine strength of character this week....started with "Mera dum ghutta hai us kamre main".....what a powerful statement was that....thereafter, the very "adult to adult" conversation that ensued with Imlie in the terrace....as he told Imlie off, as she continued to remain relentless....to the solid logical arguments he placed before her, as he convinced her about not missing college as well as the big picture, really, of the award ceremony....
Also, liked his stand of letting Malini know the truth first, before the family is privy to it....my only grouse, though...he was willing to open up when his mother was pushing the right buttons (if not for Imlie's interruption).....consistency is integral to character, Mr. Aditya Kumar Tripathi.....
Nishant is another character who is open to understanding perspective....he has very clearly joined the dots (and, pretty early on at that)....yet he had the sensibility to understand and acknowledge what a huge achievement, Imlie's published article in a leading daily means....
Now, coming to the perils of the inner voice....
No prizes for guessing that Malini Tripathi nee Chaturvedi wins this award hands down!
Undoubtedly Aditya has wronged her, but he has wronged Imlie too....in fact, the irony is that he has wronged himself the most, in the process!
Make no mistake...Malini is no Malala Yousafzai....one doesn't expect her to be one! LOL
The issue here is that she is equally responsible for undoing her own marriage, as much as Aditya's drifting apart, and finding his soulmate....
The problem statement with Malini is that self-awareness and self-worth have never particularly been her assets....she thinks she is not like her mother....is actually, pretty amiable on the surface...but, dig a little deeper....she will in the most natural manner, demean the lesser privileged (or someone in a position of less power)....in the worst manner possible!
An immediate rebuttal to this, can be that Aditya had said something similar about Imlie not so long ago....but the difference here is that, with Aditya, what you see is what you get....and hence, although flawed, is the "power of the inner voice"!
The Tripathis also leave me baffled....they are undoubtedly a good lot, but are extremely daft, if truth be told...
Malini may be a late bloomer....they are definitely not! How many more signs are required for them to get the message?
Aditya is troubled....never mind the Imlie angle...even a blind man can tell that there are serious marital issues between Aditya and Malini!
Have a request to make, Team Imlie.....screenplay has been your forte in this series....the pace of the show, definitely one of your strengths, despite being ITV....you may want to get a better grip on the realistic portrayal of certain things...
I for one, would have loved Imlie's dream (in yesterday's episode)....to have turned out to be reality....what a refreshing take that would have been....
Human attributes at their unadulterated best!
And to be fair, they would not have been wrong....just a glimpse of how this is the mirror to society, today....it can be Malini one day; Tripathis' the next!
Nonetheless, will be interesting to watch the other shade of goodness....assuming that is going to be the response of the Tripathis.....one that doesn't come from a place of empathy (read: Rupi di)....but one of inherent goodness and the willingness to understand, respect and appreciate perspective (read: maybe Nishant; definitely Aditya and Imlie)! :)
Cheers!
DocD
In case you were waiting for something to follow, the grind changes today....but, just to keep the ritual going...
P.S.: Mayuri Deshmukh, you're a good actress, but, you may want to pay attention to your fingers, lady! Those nails need attention, and ASAP, at that!
