The intresting bit ofocurse is as you said he said all this about malini but never made an effort she claims all that loudly too but she qaid karooea ke mere ho toh mere se bandh ke rahom. Adi despite all his needs has opened his palm he will complain he will feel suffocated but bandhe ga nahi instead he will follow rather than holding her down.. that is if you need to be away if you need to live somewhere else cool no.problem it I'd my problem to not being able to live without you so let me follow you m. You do you.. like a good partner should.. that has been the highlight.. he has not once tried to tie her strongly to him ..yeah verbal bohat ways and bihat tarah ke emotion dikha diye but end main it has been always a disappointed jaise tumhari marzi but then I will extend my trip kisi ek bahane se ya dusre caz he has blocked forgotten the delhi part of his life.. it is like he never belonged there or none of it matter to.him na uska kaam na uski family na kuch aur. .. all of it is secondary.. imlie is the priority which is again such a contrast caz he has been the guy who is like kuch aur nahi sirf kaam kaam.kaam.. but imlie has replaced that.. she has become.his kamzori and strength.. his jeene ke wajah...

Yes, all this time she was in his house, he had the reassurance that she was there even if not with him.....yes he ended up taking her for granted in many ways too but overall that was the headspace he was in.
The few times before that when he experienced the fear of losing her - gunshot or the bridge accident....both times it was not Imlie walking away from him, it was an external force trying to take her away from him that he fought against....fear of losing tab bhi tha but he could still chalk it up to jaan bachaana.
Imlie's act of walking away shook him up cuz she made a very deliberate choice by telling him to his face that she's leaving him.....and that's when he truly started to realize the vulnerability she evokes in him.
I think part of the issue also is that Imlie kuch bhi nahin maangti na....she doesn't ask for her haq, she doesn't ask him to stay for her sake, she doesn't ask him for help.....kuch bhi nahin....she's reached the stance of, "aap saath honge toh achha bhi lagega, nahin bhi honge toh main khud ko sambhaal lungi and jee lungi bas apni Sita Maiyya ke saath".....that is the part that undoes him.....that Imlie is very matter of fact about it in many ways....that is what keeps bringing back his fear ki she can leave him again.....because she has this clarity in her mind about surviving regardless of him.
Malini has tied him to herself all this time by jataaoing every haq, putting him through every guilt trip....but he never truly once conveyed even 1% of this need to experience the simplest of things with her.....a meal, a talk, a saath.....with Imlie, every little moment of saath seems to fulfill a lifetime's need in him.
Re: your point about how he doesn't try to tie Imlie down even as he feels this fear of losing her.....yes, that is again what sets him apart from the typical MLs in some ways. Again, it ties back to that honesty between them na that they talk through everything.....he will try to plead and request also but if it doesn't work, he is willing to just keep walking behind her and be in her presence as much as he can rather than force her to come back with him. This might also be cuz I don't think he's reached the peak of his junoon for Imlie yet.....lol....waise toh he's capable of forgetting everything in his need to protect her but abhi he doesn't feel the freedom to ask for her saath for himself.....jab woh point aayega, tab he may do more mad things in his fear of losing her and the need to have her saath.

Yes, that is what makes it more touching....that he acts tough in other ways and dikhne mein pahaad jaisa hai but he comes undone in front of this chhoti si, pyari si ladki.....Imlie ko main naazuk nahin bolungi😆.....usse zyada naazuk toh Babusahib nikle....haha. The way he says so many times in that soft si honest voice ki hum tumhaare saath jaana chahte hain.....what makes it more impactful is that they don't show Imlie over-reacting to every such admission from him....she takes a lot of it in stride ki haan ok😆.....but impact aa jaata hai.
