PART 3
Finally the day of the Panchayat arrived.
Vir had never dreaded any panchayat more than this. Though he was sure Purvi had the proofs required, he was afraid that she would leave the house after today.
Purvi was also in a dilemma of her own. After her talk with Mama Sarkar, Purvi had started observing Vir from afar. He had lost weight, developed dark circles under his eyes and overall was looking the picture of ill health! Purvi sighed, wondering how Vir would cope if she left...now she was feeling more worried about Vir than the kids. Her heart wanted to forgive Vir, but her self-respect would not allow it. As she left the haveli, Purvi prayed to Kanhaji, asking him to guide her to take the correct decision.
The Panchayat today was a massive gathering, the entire village had come out to see the proceedings, after all it was not everyday that the Mukhyayni was on trial. Purvi presented all evidence which proved her innocence. Everyone was aghast at the extent Karan had gone to get his revenge against Vir & Purvi. Vir's anger was uncontrollable, he held Karan and Chaurasia by their collars, wanting to kill them with his bare hands.
Vir, "Bhagwan ka shukar manao ki aaj tum Panchayat mein ho, mere ghar mein na. Jo aaj tanne Mukhi ki jagah ik pati ka saamana karna padta, toh apni jaan se haath dho baithte." He gave them both to the police for further action but also threw them out of the village, warning them never to come near him or his family again.
Vir then approached Purvi who was still standing at the side. Purvi looked straight at him, her eyes blazing. Vir lowered his gaze, he could not meet her eyes...the same eyes which once held love, respect and adoration for him, were now full of bitterness and accusation. Vir took Purvi by the hand & made her sit on his seat in the Panchyat. Purvi was surprised but kept silent, waiting for Vir to say something. Vir, "Main jaanta hoon maine jo kiya woh maafi ke layak na ha. Pati hone ke naate mera farz hai ki main teri aur tere izzat ki raksha karu. Par yahan toh maine khud hi tanne beizzat kar diya, tujh par bharosa na kiya."
Saying this, Vir took off his pagdi and kept it at Purvi's feet. "Uss din poore gaon ke saamne maine tujh par haath uthaya tha, aaj poore gaon ke saamne hi maafi maangta hoon. Tera gunhegaar hoon main, tu jo saza degi, manne manzoor hai."
As Vir stood before her with his head bowed & hands folded, Purvi felt immense love flood her heart and soul. She knew that the day the truth would come out, Vir would apologize to her, he always did. But she had not expected a public apology, that too in this manner. He apologized before the entire village so that her self respect was restored in the eyes of the villagers. She surveyed the crowd around them, all of whom were staring in shock at them. The villagers had never seen their Mukhiya submit to anyone before, and to see him like this, that too before his own wife, was unbelievable to them.
Purvi bent down and picked up Vir's pagdi, “Mukhiji, hamari taraf dekhiye.” As Vir lifted his eyes to meet hers, he saw acceptance where he expected censure. Purvi, "Yeh pagdi aapki shaan hai, aur humari izzat. Hum issi zameen par nahi dekh sakte”. Purvi dusted the pagdi and put it back on Vir's head. "Ghar chale?"
Vir looked at Purvi, his eyes full of hope that he scarcely dared to express. She just smiled and nodded at him. On their way home, neither of them spoke a word, both content in enjoying each other's presence after so many days.
As they reached home, Mama Sarkar met them at the door and looked at Purvi enquiringly. Purvi, "Mamaji, aaj aap hi ki wajah se hum sahi faisla kar paye hain. Thank you." Both Virendra & Purvi bend down to take his blessings. Mama Sarkar, "Hamesha khush raho dono, ek doosre ka saath kabhi mat chodna. Ab tum log apne kamre mein jao, tumhara khana wahin bhijwata hoon." Both nod and go upstairs.
Upstairs, Purvi looked around at the state of their room and shook her head as she started clearing up. Vir gave her a sheepish smile as he also took in the surroundings. Just then a servant came in with food for both of them, Purvi kept the plates on the table and moved towards Vir.
Purvi, "Mukhiji, hume aap se kuch kehna hai. Mukhiji, hum kabhi nahi chahte the, ki hamari wajah se aapko itna dukh aur itni takleef uthani pade. Aap humse kehte rahe ki Karan se door rahu, par humne hi aapki baat nahi maani. Please hume maaf kar deejiye, hum aage se aapki har baat manenge. Purvi folded her hands in apology but Vir shook his head, indicating she had nothing to apologise for.
Purvi, "Chaliye ab khana kha leejiye. Kitni sehat kharab kar li hai aapne apni. Aaj main aapko apne haathon se khilaoongi." Vir smiled and took the bite she offered him.
Both Virendra & Purvi feed each other, and Purvi kept chattering way in her usual manner while Vir just listened, happy to have Purvi back with him again.
Purvi suddenly realized that Vir was very silent. Purvi, "Arre aap bhi kuch boliye na. Tab se hum hi baat kiye jaa rahe hai. Kahin aap humse naraaz toh nahi hai na?"
Vir shook his head again. Purvi, "Toh phir kya baat hai? Aap batayenge nahi toh hum kaise samjhenge?"
Vir cleared his throat nervously, hoping his voice didn't break as he asked the one question which had been on his mind since they left the Panchayat.
Vir, "Ke main tanne...tanne...phir te bawari bula sakta hoon?"
Purvi felt such a tenderness for this man…her man! She moved closer to him and gathered him in a hug as she said, "Hum toh hai hi bawari...aapki bawari!"
