Kajol’s father passes away-artical

Actress Kajol's father, Shomu Mukherjee died early this morning in Mumbai. Ill since last year, Shomu Mukherjee was a director and the husband of Tanuja, one of Bollywood's major stars of the 60s and 70s.



Kajol and husband Ajay Devgan reached the Santa Cruz home of the Mukherjees. Kajol's father had been in hospital last year for his illness, and had come home only recently.

Part of a major Bollywood family, other than his wife and Kajol, his second daughter Tanishaa is also a movie star, and actress Rani Mukherjee is his niece.

Kajol and Ajay Devgan have a big release tomorrow, U Me Aur Hum.

Shomu Mukherji's last film as director was Sangdil Sanam which released in 1994 and starred Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala.

Brothers Deb, Joy and Shomu are sons of Sashadhar Mukherjee, described as the founder of Filmistan studios. His three sons, Joy, Deb and Shomu Mukherjee followed him into the industry. Joy and Deb were actors while Shomu became a director and producer. Shomu Mukherji married Tanuja in 1973 and had two daughters – Kajol and Tanuja – who have also made a foray into Bollywood. Actress Rani Mukherji is Kajol's second cousin as both actresses' grandfathers were brothers. Rani's dad, Ram Mukherji, is a film director and was the founder of Filmalaya Studios.
