This is the exact reason the film worked. At that time there were many erotic films and thought provoking film. It was a feel good family drama. Sometimes people just want to watch something simple. Vivah was majorly watched by adults and old people.

Yes! I always wondered how did a movie with such an outdated concept do well. I guess first it had to do with Shahid and Amrita's wonderful chemistry. Vaah life ho toh aisi was a big disappointment. And second people needed a movie that was simple and light after all the intense movies with darker and more complex topics. Faana, KANK, Dhoom 2, RDB, Don, Lage raho Munnabhai, Bhagam Bhag all had grey or shady characters in lead. It was rare to see two sweet, simple and decent people romancing so it stood out.

I was in college and went to watch with cousins. We were utterly bored. College friends felt the same. Now we are a city living folks.

2-3 years later, I was talking to my then boyfriend now husband’s college friends who hailed from small towns and villages — they all loved Vivaah.

Couple years later, I got to know Vivaah is much loved in arrange marriage crowds.

Now the language is dated but most arranged marriage folks liked the courtship period and the whole families meeting n going on trip n all that. I still laugh at some of the scenes but can’t deny movie has much relatable factor for small town arranged marriage quota folks. (80s-90s born)

Lot of times, what we, cities people, don’t realize is, Arranged Marriage is still the most accepted form of alliance and it works too. It has it’s audience.
