What is the reason for Vivaah's success? It was a cheesy family drama which released in 2006 amidst more experimental films, and garnered a cult following of its own. I always thought it was behind its time, and had a dated look, even though Shahid and Amrita were good in it. More 80's and 90's kind of drama.
Also, Sooraj Bharjatya himself went back to his comfort zone after MKDH, which was more of a romance than a family drama.
But my point is - when the audience was clearly leaning towards more subtle films and new concepts, how on earth did Vivaah generate that kind of response? Mind you, I'm not denying that it was a family entertainer and had a good message, but the overall vibe of the film was outdated for 2006. This was just 2 years after mainstream films had become far more steamy and showing intimate scenes between the leads, especially Neha Dhupa had made the famous statement that only sex and SRK sell.
