Explain the success of Vivaah(2006)

What is the reason for Vivaah's success? It was a cheesy family drama which released in 2006 amidst more experimental films, and garnered a cult following of its own. I always thought it was behind its time, and had a dated look, even though Shahid and Amrita were good in it. More 80's and 90's kind of drama.

Also, Sooraj Bharjatya himself went back to his comfort zone after MKDH, which was more of a romance than a family drama.

But my point is - when the audience was clearly leaning towards more subtle films and new concepts, how on earth did Vivaah generate that kind of response? Mind you, I'm not denying that it was a family entertainer and had a good message, but the overall vibe of the film was outdated for 2006. This was just 2 years after mainstream films had become far more steamy and showing intimate scenes between the leads, especially Neha Dhupa had made the famous statement that only sex and SRK sell.

For me it was the chemistry between Shahid and amrita.

I would always watch it for the pair.

Despite no intimate scenes I could feel the love of lead pair.

It worked so much that I watched the movie more than 10 times.

Yeah true that was one of the highlights of the film. I have always loved their pair as well.

It was an era of Ekta Kapoor soap opera. The audience which liked soap opera loved sanskari romance of Shahid and Amrita.

No it was precisely the era when things were getting steamier on the big screen, and masses were lapping it up. The sanaksari romance was like a throwback to another era.

It looks like you did not knew the popularity of saas bahu dramas- Kyunki Saas Bhi Khabhi Bahu thi, Kahaan Ghar Ghar Ki, Betiya etc. I was in college that time and I remember the insane popularity of long mangalsutras, big bindis and serial sarees.

Emraan Haashmi and his songs were popular, but most of the youth listened to him secretly.

How old were you in 2006?

I highly doubt this lame movie would survive today as it's extremely unwatchable.

Sooraj has the ability to connect strongly with family audiences . His movies remind desi ppl of their own family gatherings and equations, that’s why they have worked at BO . The only time he tried sth different with MPKDH, it was an epic failure

It made sense that Sooraj Barjatya went back to his comfort zone, after the disaster that was MPKDH.😆

You have to realize, majority of INDIA is STILL very conservative, even in 2020.

Besides, good family entertainers have always been liked by the masses, and through re-runs on television & CD/DVD, they developed a cult following with children/family audience.

Ask yourself? In 2006, what would you have preferred to watch alongside your family/kids/parents/grandparents?
Would you've watched a Murder or a Aashiq Banaya Aapne with them?😆
