Is footfalls (no of tickets sold) the right way to judge how much a film is loved by the audience?

Maybe it's not accurate, but it's the most tangible way to judge how much a film is loved by the audience, because something can be loved only after it's watched.

So if there's a question that which is the most loved film of each decade?... and if I answer this based on footfalls, then it would be :

2010s : Dangal

2000s : Gadar - Ek Prem Katha

90s : Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!

80s : Kranti

70s : Sholay

60s : Mughal-E-Azam

50s : Mother India

These are the movies which had the highest footfalls than any other movie released in their respective decades.

Does this also make them the most loved film of their respective decades?

If not, then why not? And then which is the most loved film of those decades and why?

Yes. These were unarguably the most loved and biggest hit films of their decades by miles. No discussion needed here. These are facts. Everyone would obviously agree.

Well, I agree there's no other way to measure a film's success but this method also has flaws

What about the fact that these footfalls can be repeat viewers who loved the film so much that they came again and again?

And another thing, can a most watched film necessarily translate into most loved film? can it be that the movie appeals to a certain segment more for e.g. launde lapades?

There is huge chunk of TV audience who hardly visit cinemas but do catch films when aired. Film that does well at BO and garn good constitent trps on television should be most loved. Some movies ka theatrical experience TV se alag hota hai like Dangal. Par TV pe utna maza nahi aata jitna cinema me aata hai.

So Consistent good TRPs should be the yardstick to gauge how loved film is.

90s : Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!

I guess it would be a mix of both factors : the BO collection and TRPs to decide the most loved film and it be over a period of time. Instant like will always be BO. For overall like dislike the TRPs would play a role and add the online platforms viewings.

Subject of some movies lose appeal after a certain period of time... or sometimes political pressure makes channels air the films less... jaise PK or any aman-shanti films. So a channel is not airing some movies doesn't mean those movies are/were less loved.

But yeah if you see some 2+year old movies often on TV (Not when the lead star's new movie is about to release. That's PR work)... means the movie has got audience.

Undoubtedly! If Big B was smarter he would have made a sequel of this.
