Yep, I'm the queen of unpopular opinions!😈

The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov, right? That's on my tbr too! I have heard so much of praise for how brilliantly he incorporates AIs into his stories.

Yes, yes...the very same! And that's the reason I got interested in this series too. I became very interested in AI's after watching JARVIS in Iron Man and reading about Mark Zukerberg's AI. But I've also heard that it doesn't have much character development or real action which, while understandable because of the way the original trilogy came into being, is also making me postpone reading it. It is, after all, an entire series and I have to be really committed to it if I want to get through the big books.

Regarding your question, I have no such resolutions as of yet. I have certain books that I definitely want to get to next year and that's about it. I do want to read a lot more memoirs coming year.

I usually don't think much about what I'm going to read either, but this time I decided to have a goal because I usually don't step out of my comfort zone and end up reading only mystery and thriller.

Memoirs and biographies don't interest me much. I've read only very very few to date. But I really want to read Becoming and a couple of other books of that sort.

The same happens to me too. Sometimes I also start building my own story in my head with the characters present in the book and have to drag my mind back to canon. That usually happens when I realize I've inserted myself in my story too.😆

Wow. 5 classics is a huge and admirable goal. 👏

I've never listened to audiobooks but I hear so many people enjoying it, I think I'll give it a try too in the coming year. I have listened to some actors presenting short stories by Satyajit Ray like a play (with voices and sound effects and background music) and I loved it, so I think I'll like audiobooks too.

Tbh, being controlled by books doesn't sound so bad. That's a whole different world, although a bit of an addictive one. There are worse ways to live.😆

@diya.

I Have recently tried to listen to audiobooks. But I couldn't get into all of them. I believe the reason is narration. The narrator of crazy rich Asians is really good. She is making the experience enjoyable. I think if she wasnt good at it, I won't have finished even one chapter.

And I have lived in the fiction for so long that I dread reality now. So I am going to give reality a Chance this year

This is a stupid question but what is the point of setting goals of how many books to read in a year? I am just curious

I was disappointed with the book, tbh. I went into it with high expectations but I didn't like it that much. I loved the concept of the book but I thought it could have been better executed. I couldn't connect to the characters at all. The entire story was too predictable, and by that I mean I could tell what was going to happen only a couple of chapters in. Those two things put me off any book. The only parts I liked were the three stories the monster told. Another unpopular opinion from me, I guess. 😆

Yes, that's what I'm trying now: to try out new authors and genres. I've also planned for next year😛:

1. I really want to try out a classic from Sci-Fi. I was thinking about picking one of these: the Foundation series, hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, George Orwell's works, The Time Machine, The Martian.

Sci Fi is one genre I can’t bring myself to read. It’s just a huge leap from my comfort zone. I’ve read the first book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and I liked the audiobook narration but the book, not so much. I have heard a lot about the Foundation series and even Dune by Frank Herbert which is soon going to be out as a movie starring Timothée Chalamet .

2. I've also kept at least one Hindi novel and several short stories in my goal for the next year.

Although I did say I want to read a Hindi novel, I doubt it’s going to happen. I might just listen to a book in audiobook format as a start.
There is this book called 50 Greatest Short Stories. I think I might just read a few stories from that.

3. Mythology: The Iliad, Robert Graves' The Greek Myths.

The Iliad is a book I find intimidating. This year I’ve decided to tackle intimidating books or genres by listening to it as audiobooks.

With these goals, I think I'm going to set my next year's goal at 10. Even that seems like a huge feat.🤪

The number of books doesn’t matter but if you manage to fulfill these reading goals that will be an amazing personal feat. Go for it! I’m going to take inspiration from you.

It’s a pity you didn’t like the book but it’s good to have a different take on the book since Shreya & I liked it.

I think you & Shreya have similar tastes when it comes to Fantasy whereas Shreya & I have similar tastes when it comes to Contemporary. Shanam & Unique.Sheep have similar tastes when it comes to romance novels. It’s good that all of us to an extent have partners who have more or less similar tastes in certain genres.

Question: Are you guys planning to set a New Year's Reading Resolution?

It won’t be anything iron clad, like I have to read it but I do have a few plans in mind.

1. To read more classics. I read 3 of them this year and I want to push myself to read at least 5 next year.

2. To read different genres especially Fantasy.
3. To read at least 2 chunkers.

4. Read a book by Toni Morrison and a book by James Baldwin.
5. Read more books based on different cultures rather than just books set in the States or UK.

The Unhoneymooners was a fun book. Totally worth reading. Keep it to read after you have read an intense book, I think you will enjoy it more that way.

Setting goals is more of an external motivator to read more books.
Of course, if you are not in the zone to read, even that won’t help but like I said, it’s just an external factor to push me to read more.
