Anirudh, who was clasping Bondita’s smaller hand in his own larger one in a firm grip, crossed the threshold together with his wife and entered the Roychowdhary mansion.
Bihari was crossing the hall when he absent mindedly looked towards the entrance. There was a tangible aura of dejection about him and it had become a routine for him to check the entrance time and again as he awaited the return of his Barrister Babu and Choti Malkin.
As soon as his eyes met the sight of the two familiar people walking into the hall, he stopped dead. Out of the blue, his eyes brimmed with tears of happiness. He hurried towards them.
“Barrister Babu, Choti Malkin! We have been waiting for this day when both of you will return. I will inform Bade Malik. You don’t know how much he had been looking forward to see both of you return safe and sound.Today is an auspicious day. Very auspicious day.” Bihari wiped his tears and hurried away.
“Pati Babu. Kaka Sasurji won’t scold me now, will he?”Bondita looked at Anirudh with innocently hopeful eyes.
“No, Bondita. Why would anyone scold you when you were notat fault at all?” Anirudh smiled reassuredly at Bondita.
Bondita beamed back at him and opened her mouth to say something but was interrupted by hurried footsteps heading towards them. They turned around to see Trilochan Roychowdhary was hurrying over to them, followed closely by Batuk and Bihari.
As he came to abrupt halt in front of them, the older man looked at them with tear drenched eyes. Anirudh bent down to touch his feet but Trilochan stopped him and pulled him into a warm embrace.
“You don’t know how relieved and exhilarated I am to see both of you return home, safe and sound. I am so proud of you Anirudh. You have accomplished the task you had undertaken.” Trilochan became emotional while talking.
“I could achieve success due to your love and blessings,Kaka.” Anirudh smiled at the man who was more than a father to him.
Trilochan smiled tremulously at Anirudh and turned his gaze to Bondita, who came forward and touched his feet. He kept his hand on her head and blessed her with a safe and secure life and happiness.
“I am sorry, Kaka sasurji. I didn’t want to lie. But...”Bondita trailed away, lowering her gaze.
“Have you seen the consequences of lying?” Trilochan asked softly, stooping down.
Bondita nodded sheepishly.
“So, will you lie again?” Trilochan raised his brows.
Bondita shook her head, looking as adorable as ever.Trilochan couldn’t stop his lips from twitching.
“Good girl. Are you alright?” Trilochan’s eyes reflected the concern and affection in his heart for the girl who had become more of a daughter than a daughter in law to him.
“I am fine. How can anything happen to me? Patibabu is there. He will always save me.” Bondita was quick to reply.
Anirudh was yet again stunned by the unconditional trust that Bondita, his wife, had bestowed on him. He vowed silently that he would return the favour with his unconditional trust on her and never again would mistrust her.
“So, the garrulous daughter in law is back with a bang.”Trilochan chuckled, making Bondita giggle.
“Baudi, you are back! I knew you will come back. We all missed you so much.” Batuk grinned excitedly.
“I missed you all so much too.” Bondita grinned back.
“But Anirudh, you haven’t said yet what happened to Bahu and where did she disappear?” Trilochan looked at Anirudh questioningly.
“I will tell you everything, Kaka. But first, Batuk take Bondita with you. Bondita, go with Batuk, okay?” Anirudh instructed turning towards his brother and his wife.
“Okay.” Bondita immediately agreed and walked away with batuk, chattering and giggling.
“Now tell me what happened, Anirudh?” Trilochan turned towards Anirudh.
Anirudh sighed and began to narrate the chain of incidents that had taken place since he had left his engagement with Saudamini to go in search of Bondita.
Trilochan was furious to say the least. Anirudh had expected his uncle, who had a traditional and orthodox outlook, to refuse to accept Bondita as the daughter in law of the house after knowing that she had been in a place like Hira Mandi. He braced himself for the fall out. However, he was in for a surprise as Trilochan’s reaction was completely opposite to Anirudh’s expectations.
“How dare they? How dare they do this with the daughter in law of the Roychowdhary family?” Trilochan roared, outraged.
“Kaka, I want to punish Bondita’s uncle and aunt but I don’t have any evidence against them, except what Bondita said. And they can easily say that we have manipulated Bondita to say this.” Anirudh sighed in frustration.
“Don’t worry, Anirudh. I will make sure the culprits get their dues. You go and take care of Bahu. The poor child had been through so much at this tender age.” Trilochan assured Anirudh.
Aniruddh nodded and walked away, wondering how Trilochan Kaka planned to punish the culprits without evidence. Trilochan, however, had already planned his course of action.
“Bihari, tell Munshi to meet me as soon as possible and also ask him to bring Saurav along.” Trilochan ordered.
Bihari immediately rushed out to carry out the command.

“Oh ho, Didi (Sister)! How long are you going to cry likethis? And how can you blame us? What can we do if your daughter’s husband abandoned her and if the villagers made her run away? We had to give shelter to both of you, a widow and an abandoned woman, but we did it with a smile, didn’t we? And instead of being grateful you are accusing us?” Deboleena rebuked a sobbing Sumati.
“Boudi (Sister in law), we will leave. I will leave taking my daughter with me. Please tell me where you have sent her. She hadn’t run away because I clearly remember that there was a man who had come to take her away. Please tell me, what you have done with my daughter.” Sumati entreated through tears.
“You are accusing us of something we haven’t done. We don’t know where your daughter went. And how could you know if there was indeed a man? You were unconscious. You had some nightmare probably.” Deboleena glared at her.
“Deboleena, if you have indeed caused any harm to my daughter, then, trust me, it will come back to you in the form of retribution.”Sumati wiped her tears and got to her feet gingerly.
“Are you....are you cursing me?” Deboleena blustered in a blinding rage.
“No. I don’t curse anyone. I am not like you, Deboleena. I am pointing out the consequences you will suffer if you have indeed harmed my daughter.” Sumati stared at the furious woman in front of her with a strange coldness.
The hitherto unseen chill in his usually docile and meeksister’s gaze caused a shiver to run down Sundaram’s spine. He felt a strange sense of foreboding. He felt that Sumati’s words were that of an aggrieved mother and the curse that comes from a mother whose child had been harmed did have the potential to destroy.
He decided to intervene. He was about to say something when his words were stuck in his throat as a motor vehicle screeched to a halt infront of their house. Exchanging nervous glances with his wife, Sundaram and Deboleena walked out of the house, followed by a hopeful Sumati, who was hoping for her daughter’s return.
Munshi and Saurav disembarked from the car and the latter opened the door for Trilochan Roychowdhary. Trilochan Roychowdhary disembarked from the car with all the natural grace of a landlord.
Sundaram and Deboleena exchanged fearful glances and hurried over to them and greeted the affluent man. Trilochan didn’t bother to even look at them. He turned to Sumati and nodded in acknowledgment when she greeted him.
“Zamindar babu (Mr. Landlord), have Jamai Babu (Son in law)found my daughter?” The dejected mother managed to speak through a tear clogged voice.
“Yes. And she is fine. She is at her own home now with her husband. You may go there to visit her because we won’t ever allow her to return to this cursed village even for a fleeting visit.” Trilochan declared.
“I understand. I will go to Tulsipur and see her. I can’t be grateful enough to you and Jamai Babu (son in law) for finding my Bondita and bringing her back.” Sumati joined her palms.
“And that brings me neatly back to the point of my visit here.” Trilochan Roychodhary’s features hardened.
He beckoned a boy, who was standing nearby and instructed him to ask the villagers to gather there. Afraid of the anger radiating from the older man, the boy hurried away to do his bidding.
Soon the villagers gathered in front of Sundaram’s house.
“Ah! Here come the great people who had tortured our daughter-in-law law. Do tell me why.” Trilochan demanded.
“We have been told that Bondita has been abandoned by her in laws.” One of the villagers answered timidly.
“And who said that?” Trilochan looked at them questioningly.
“Deboleena.” Came the reply.
“Ah! But she was a little wrong about it. We have sent Bondita here for a few days, not forever. Had it been the case, Bondita wouldn’thave been at our mansion right now with her husband. You want to see an abandoned woman? I will show you. Munshi!” Trilochan gestured something to Munshi.
“Of course, Bade Malik (Master). Surmani, bring her out.”Munshi called out.
The car’s door opened again and Surmani dragged out a sobbing Sampoorna.
“Sampoorna! What...” Deboleena began.
“Yes, Sampoorna. Your daughter. She is the real abandoned woman. Villagers, treat her as you treated my daughter in law, Bondita,thinking her to be an abandoned woman.” Trilochan commanded.
The villagers exchanged nervous glances but didn’t make a move.
“Go on. Or else the fire of my wrath will burn your village down.” Trilochan threatened.
Gulping hard, the villagers gathered around the place. With an evil smirk, Surmani dragged Sampoorna towards them and threw her down in their midst.
“No! No, please. Please, don’t do this. Please, Jamai Babu.Save my daughter. She is your wife. The daughter in law of your family.”Deboleena cried out.
“Even Bondita was my nephew’s wife and the daughter in law of Roychowdhary family but you didn’t think of that before throwing her to the vultures. Why should we think about your daughter now? Villagers, what are you waiting for?” Trilochan paid no heed to the evil woman’s entreaties.
The villagers drew closer and began to shower cow dung,stones, etc on Sampoorna. Sampoorna began to cry bitterly and plead with her parents to rescue her from the torment.
“Sampoorna! No, don’t hurt her. Please. Leave her.” Deboleena hurried over to her daughter, followed by Sundaram.
However, they were stopped by Surmani and Munshi who grabbed their arms respectively and pulled them back.
“No! Sampoorna! Zamindar Babu (Mr. Landlord)! Please let my daughter go!” Deboleena began to cry bitterly seeing the dismal condition of her daughter.
“This is just the beginning. After this, I will send your daughter to the lovely place where you had sent Bondita.” Trilochan smirked.
“No, no, please, don’t do that. I am the culprit. Punish me.Let my daughter go. I was the one who sold Bondita to that man. I knew he was going to take her to Heera mandi. Please, leave my daughter. She is innocent.”Deboleena blurted out the truth in extreme distress.
Both Sundaram and Sumati were shocked to hear the truth.Even Sundaram wasn’t aware of the whole truth. All he knew was that they were selling Bondita to someone who will engage her in child labour. Today, in true sense of the word, his wife’s true colours were revealed in front of him. For the very first time, he was disgusted at her as well as himself. He was a devious man but even he was no match to his unscrupulous wife.
Deboleena felt a jerk as someone turned her around and a hard slap landed on her cheek, causing her nose to bleed. As she blinked away the haze created by tears, she gaped at a furious Sumati standing right infront of her.
“How dare you? How could you? How could you sell a girl who is like your daughter, who saved your daughter’s married life? Being a woman yourself how could you do that a girl? Are you even a woman? Let alone a woman,are you even a human? You disgust me, Deboleena, totally and utterly.” Sumati cried out in burning fury.
“Heard that inspector? You may come out now and take this trash and her equally trashy husband away.” Trilochan Roychowdhary called out.
As soon as he finished, an Indian inspector, followed by some constables, came out of his hiding spot behind a tree and marched towards the Jadhav’shouse.
Surmani and Munshi let go of Deboleena and Sundaram’s arms and stepped back. Both the husband and wife were too stunned to react. The inspector and the constables took them away after assuring Trilochan Chowdhary that they would serve a long term in jail for kidnapping and selling a girl.
“Villagers, you all may stop now. Sampoorna, even you aren’tinnocent. You are a very selfish woman. You let your sister bear the brunt of her efforts to help you in saving your marriage. You didn’t open your mouth till Anirudh was already on his way to bring Bondita back. You did all that even after knowing what fate awaits an abandoned woman in this country. If you can do that to the sister who put her own life at stake to save your marital life then you aren’t worthy of trust. This was your punishment. I wanted you to feel the same agony that Bondita went through because of your selfish deeds.After this you can return to Munshi’s family as Saurav’s wife if they still want you to. But from now on I don’t even want your inauspicious shadow to fall on Bahu (Daughter in law). From now on neither will you ever try to meet Bondita nor will you be ever seen in our mansion. Make sure to remember that because Trilochan Roychowdhary does not like to repeat his words.” Concluding his speech, Trilochan turned on his heels and walked away towards his car.
This time the chauffeur opened the door and the landlord settled down in the back seat of the vehicle. The driver got in too and soon the car pulled away, leaving Munshi, Surmani, Saurav, Sampoorna, Sumati and the villagers behind.
