Tom and Jerry - Who was the hero of this show and who was the villain?

Often heard people say that they thought that Tom was the villain in childhood but realized after growing up that it's actually Jerry who was the villain.

Life was never fair to Tom.😭Forever misunderstood.Plus he was somebody who was a bit of a tube light compared to oversmart Jerry .

OT: Both characters are better represented as rivals (and in some sense best friends) than heroes/villains.

Read this theory somewhere that tom didn't actually hate Jerry, he used to pretend to chase and harm him so that owner of the house wouldn't replace him with another cat.
