THE MIRACLE

To say that Rishab Bajaj was surprised seeing his wife’s no. flash continuously on his phone screen on tuesday would be an understatement, Prerna never called during working hours, never all she did was drop a text if the matter was important but usually waited for him to get home if she needed to discuss something so seeing her face flash on his screen meant something was up.

As soon as he heard her voice his brain started to work on overdrive, she had definitely been sobbing, her strained voice was a clear indication of this.

“What’s wrong Prerna is kukki fine, are you fine why have you been crying” he asked the urgency in his voice unmasked.

“We are fine more than fine I…. you…can you Just come home please” she had softly said before breaking down again and his heart had screamed in agony.

“I’ll be there, just a few minutes please stop crying” he said and hung up understanding there was no use trying to talk to her in such a state.

Every minute of delay had been pure agony to his tormented brain, he had cursed the daam traffic as his brain conjured up horrible scenarios one after another, and he shut it trying to keep his sanity in check.

***************************************He saw her pacing on the porch looking like a mixture of nerves but still unharmed in any other way and her eyes had lit up at the sight of him as she had all bur ran to him.

“Just come with me” she said and before waiting for a reply lead him inside the house towards their daughters room. Prerna hesitated for a second before slowly opening the door

“Sneha please” it was something between a plea and prayer and Rishab couldn’t understand the meaning of this but it looked like his daughter did.

“Papa…”

This wasn’t true what was it a dream, a nightmare what??

“Its true”

That was enough, that one word from his daughters mouth was enough to make the world spin on its axis and bring a man like him on his knees. He couldn’t count how many nights he had stayed awake hoping, wishing, praying to hear this one word from his daughter. Countless hours he had spent pondering on the thought that could he ever be able to hear his daughter’s voice. He had been unable to say anything and simply took his daughter in his embrace hoping to convey his love because words failed him. He didn’t notice when his wife quietly left the room giving them this moment, or when his daughter fell asleep in his arms, didn’t notice how long he simply looked at her sleeping almost afraid that this was a dream.

***************************************“Mr Bajaj,” Prerna had called out to him while he had been looking at the sunset from his balcony. He looked at her small approaching form and noticed a bowl in her hand that smelled divine, she quickly handed him the utensil filled with suji ka halwa before speaking “I thought today called for a celebration”.

“Did you hear it, how melodious her voice is, how soothing” she asked more to herself than him.

He looked at the woman in front of him, the one whose life he had ripped apart without a second thought just to provide his daughter something she wanted, he wondered how she did it, loved someone so hopelessly that she was ready to give everything away for their happiness, how did she find it in herself to have no resentment for a man who had taken away everything familiar to her and thrust her in a world of unknown for his own benefit.

Rishab Bajaj was no fool and he knew even if she loved his daughter like her own, even if she had forgiven him for what he had done to her, even if she reacted to every touch of his like fire, even if she had been loyal to him in every way that mattered she wasn’t his not in the way she was sneha’s, not in the way she had once been Anurag’s.

But he could allow himself a moment of foolishness, she was close enough to kiss, he could allow himself the moment of madness kiss her taste the love, happiness, joy on her tongue just once. He would have done just that had she not chosen the same moment to crash into his arms, her tears resurfacing again, wetting his shirt.

He had quickly pulled his thoughts together rubbing circles on her back in an attempt to soothe her, He muttered everything from reassuring words to sweet nothings in an attempt to calm her down along with thank yous.

Rishabh is the happiest in the world, no wonder he is speechless.

Prerna's emotions are all over the place just like his.

But he still blames himself for changing her life & no matter what she may never be his like the way she is Sneha's or has been Anurag's.

And this thought hurts him.
