Tabu has practically broken EVERY stereotype that people have, about actresses/women in general.

  • She is 48.
  • Has been working in films for years.

Tabu is just class apart for me. ⭐️

Unfortunately, female stardom is rarely celebrated in our country.

People would rather worship Sallu/Saif/Akshay for their mindless, cringy films but will never acknowledge an actress like Tabu, because she is not mainstream enough for them.🤢

Thankfully, she doesn't give two hoots about having "superstardom" or "success" in a country that is obsessed with "superstars.😛 She is not worried about what the audiences think of her. 😆
She enjoys being an actress and simply does her work. 👏

👏👏In fact movies like Drishyam, De De Pyar De, Maqbool, Haider, Andhadhun did decently well at box office, thanks to Tabu's contribution as well. She has a talent for nailing multi-layered characters. I agree, good actors need to be celebrated in their lifetime. Too bad she didn't get as many awards as she deserved to have, no thanks to bribe-friendly award shows like filmfare.

A lot of the myths we hear today are quite outdated.

This was true in the 90s.

Sridevi quit by 34 in 1997. Madhuri stopped just after 35 in 2002.

But then we have girls who were going strong post 35: Kajol turned 35 in 2009 and in 2010 she had a massively successful year. She took a break yes but she was still turning down lucrative films during that time. Aishwarya turned 35 in 2008 and she had a hugely successful run even at 36, 38, 39. She just slowed down due to childbirth and motherhood. Let's not forget she was offered films like Happy New Year (2014), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and eventually she signed Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) - who else had that power??

Now Rani and Vidya crossed the 40 mark and are carrying the baton. Kareena will be 40 in 4 months. Priyanka is 39 next year. They are super hot property right now.

Never before in the history of Hindi cinema have all (but 1) actresses been 30+

That one is Alia of course, but at 27 she is no spring chicken.

Deepika is 34.

Kangana, Sonakshi, Shraddha are 33.

Anushka is 32.

Katrina is 37 this year.

But also, girls used to start much earlier. In the 90s: Kajol, Karisma, Urmila, Raveena, Divya all signed multiple films before their 16th birthdays! That is a fact.

Today the average age for starting out is more like 21-25. Which is great because they have that extra layer of maturity: both in looks and wisdom.

Years ago I made a list of ALL the Filmfare Best Actress nominations: I put their age next to the name of the actress. To my surprise between 1955 and 2010, there was only once when an actress won the award aged over 35.

The average age of nominees was 20-something.

While the men it was totally different.

So now, girls are starting much later, so it's working in their favour because they don't debut looking "sola saal ki" so they are not done and dusted by 26 because they look too old.

I much prefer the Shraddha Kapoor model: arrive at 23, pretend you're 16, do young roles, but get to stick around until mid 30s in the bargain.

Side note: Shraddha really needs to do good films if she wants to survive the next 2-3 years.

Well for the kind of stories bollywood comes up with, it doesn't have a lot of space for actresses who are older. It's also true once an actress has kids, it's hard for her to look the same as before. Motherhood has its own challenges for women. Whereas for male actors, they don't bear children, so that's not a big issue for them and our country's general attitude is to accept a young girl with older man but not the other way round. So yeah, it's indeed harder on actresses unless bollywood can come up with better roles for women.

PS: Even if the actresses aren't mothers or maintain pretty bodies and looks after motherhood, most roles written for them aren't for a woman of their age!

Just asking, how many more flops will it take for Vidya balan to be written off as a done and dusted actress which she is ?

Tabu has 0 star power,no one would go to watch her if she had done mardaani or hichki or even those tapsee films which end up below 30cr atleast .

This was true in the 2000s. But in the last few years, since Haider, she has etched a place in the hearts of cinema lovers. She was the ONLY reason I watched Jawaani Jaaneman, Golmaal Returns, De De Pyaar De. These aren't solo films, but she adds to the appeal of the film, that's why she is cast.

Rani Mukerji is super talented, and a much bigger star for sure. However we can't deny that having the backing of one of the most prolific studios in the country Yash Raj Films is hugely beneficial.

Would Rani be killing it like she is, if she wasn't married to Aditya Chopra? I don't think so. Every star needs major support behind the scenes to thrive.

YRF know how to market a film, they done EVERYTHING possible to make sure that Rani's films do well, or at least are PERCEIVED to have done well.

A lot of PR work also takes place. Number inflation goes on. Paid articles are put out. Big studios have that power. It's literally a NETWORK.

Imagine where Taapsee Pannu would be if she had the push of YRF. She has good support from her own world of producers/directors, and she's doing very well but there is a tangible difference.
