CHAPTER 7

It had been two weeks since their date and their relationship had been progressing, slowly but surely, the time she spent with him for a lack of better word had been eye-opening,they spent nights talking, sipping coffee and bantering, she had understood her husband more than she had in the past seven months and though a little held back at first he certainly had made every effort.

She was happier than she had been in a very long time, her life felt like bliss most of the time but she was aware there was still a chapter of her past she needed to close once and for all in order to move forward, so here she was sitting in a small coffee shop near her college, waiting for him.

She saw Anurag enter and the guilt in her chest intensified, he looked tired and heartbroken even after so long and she cursed herself again how had she so foolishly assumed that he would move on without a closure, in order to save him from the guilt and destruction she had thrown his heart and life into turmoil, left him at the altar, refused to talk to him for months without giving him a single explanation she needed to tell him the truth, she needed to give him the closure he deserved perhaps needed.

He looked at her like his thirst was finally quenched, his eyes taking her in and stopping at the sight of her mangalsutra.

“Hi…. Thank you for coming Anurag…. I needed to talk to you, I need to tell you something”

He looked at her directly in the eye before speaking “I know what you did and why you did it,I just found out, just come back we will deal with it, no one would say anything, I’ll set it right, we can begin again a clean slate you no longer need to be married to him for my sake, we can set this right” he looked at her determined and hopeful.

She signed this was going to be tougher than she initially expected “Anurag, whatever happened is done and dealt with, we are a closed chapter. I did what I did for you but now I don’t want my old life back trust me I am happy, I am very happy and it’s time to move forward for both of us” she said determinedly. “I am sorry that I didn’t talk to you for so long, you deserved a reason, an explanation, an apology and I am sorry, I am so sorry for hurting you but I don’t love you, not anymore”

He looked at her like she had just poured a bucket of ice water on him it felt like he was finally seeing reality for the first time in months it didn’t matter what they had the truth was she was married and no longer his as the realization actually dawned upon him he looked at her finally seeing her she looked peaceful, content even happy.

“Prerna, you’re right perhaps this closure was what I needed…..we can’t be friends, not after our history but if you ever need me, ever I am a call away, just one don’t ever hesitate. It will take some time but I’ll try to move forward, you’ll always be special to me even just as a memory and I’ll be happy if you are happy” he said, getting up and then hesitantly looking at her “Goodbye” he whispered before walking towards the door.

With every step he took she had felt the burden on her heart lessen until it was gone, until she could finally breathe again, it felt so light, so good.

**********************************************************

Rishab observed his wife as she served him dinner and fussed over sneha, there was something different about her today, she looked as if she had been breathing after months. Her laughter had been melodious, airy and affection had been running freely around her, her happiness was so infectious that even he couldn’t help smiling.

He put sneha to bed and returned to his room only to find his wife humming and reorganizing her closet, Prerna couldn’t sit still if she was happy, she needed something to do, something to channel her excitement towards he had noticed this during the initial months of their marriage and goodness the day sneha had spoken her first words prerna had been so happy that she had made five different deserts, redecorated the whole living room and still refused to sleep at three in the night, looking at her now she again seemed to buzz with the same energy, less intense but nevertheless same.

He snaked his arms around his wife and rested his head on her shoulder she leaned in to him taking in the rich, woody smell of his cologne, but did not turn around and continued folding her clothes, this should last forever he thought.

“What’s the reason for your happiness” he asked, nuzzling her neck with his nose.

“I met Anurag” she said.

The revelation certainly left him a little surprised, Prerna had avoided the manlike plague since they had come back from their honeymoon, had ignored his calls and messages, refused to see him and had no communication with him for seven months. And he couldn’t help thinking why now, after everything.

His hands hadn’t left her waist but they no longer had warmth seeping through them and the slight stiffness in his posture was impossible to miss, because of their closeness.

Prerna knew her husband well enough to know that he would never ask for an explanation or question her loyalty, his infinite trust in her had always left her unnerved, and she also knew that he would be curious about her meeting but would not ask her a single question.

She turned around still in his embrace and placed her hands around his neck, moving closer to him, leaving space for just air to be between them and nothing else.

“I..” she began only to be cut off by him.

“I don’t need you to explain prerna” he said plainly.

She smiled lightly “Par mujhe aapko batana hai .I thought about it for a lot of time and realized I was being unfair to him he deserved a closure from my side, for everything I did and then when I talked to him today, I don’t know how but he found about our deal and I talked to him, everything is clear and he promised me he would try to move on” she finished.

“How was your day” she asked, giving him no time to respond to their previous conversation.

“Good, except a few incompetent fools irritating me”

“Incompetent fools, you mean Mr Malik the representative of seghal enterprises” she asked.

“How did you know that” he asked, eyebrows raised.

“I called you but you were in a meeting so Mehra picked up the phone and we were talking for a while so he told me about it”

“So my lawyer was gossiping with my wife during working hours, I need to talk to him about this”

“O please you’re just jealous that he likes me more than he likes you, sometimes I wonder why didn’t, you get married to him”

“Lame joke Prerna”

“Better than yours”

“If you believe that”

Finally, the closure which both Anurag & Prerna needed to move on in every sense.

No wonder Prerna is cheerful after the meet.

I like the progress of the relationship of Prerna & Bajaj.

Their talks, sharing their day with each other, silly jokes, I love it.

Nice update, continue soon.

PART 8

Next morning Rishab woke up to the sight of his wife peacefully sleeping in his arms, her arms around his waist and head tucked in the crook of his neck, he pondered, if it was time to tell her the truth the consequence of it would be fatal she could hate him all over again this time with no hope of forgiveness, but lying to her was no longer an option because prena would find out the truth maybe not now, not for years but one day she would and till then he would be too ruined, too much in love to let her go.

He had no qualms in admitting to himself that he had no idea how deep in love he was with her, Prerna knew he was still hiding something, she knew he still hadn’t shown her the worst of himself and yet she had been willing to trust him, willing to plunge into a darkness, whose depth was still a mystery to her.

Anurag Basu could be forgiven for all his stupidity and rashness if this was what he had lost, if prerna had given Anurag half of what she was giving him then that man deserved to mourn, to be mad and furious at Rishab, at the world, at fate because it wasn’t fair, it really wasn’t fair to have had prerna once, to be promised her trust and loyalty, to be given a taste of her love and then have her snatched from the dreams you’ve weaved.

Breaking his thoughts she stirred in her sleep, seeking him and then falling back in the welcoming arms of sweet morning sleep, he wondered if she would ever seek him again when she knew the truth, how would, she look at him with disgust and anger or indifference and rage only time would tell.

He didn’t deserve her forgiveness, he knew but he could still hope still pray to the god his wife called her best friend that by some miracle she would find it in herself to not hate him, to not be disgusted by his very presence.

He had stopped his train of thoughts and went to the ensuite to get ready for the day,by the time he had come out Prerna was awake.

“Good morning” she had said lazily.

“Morning, you are free in the afternoon right” he asked, combing his hair.

“Yes, are you taking me on a date again”

“It’s not a date, be ready by 2 o’clock, now I need to rush to office”

“Breakfast?”

“There is an important meeting” he said rushing out, but not before pecking her forehead lightly, and she couldn’t help but think that his lips on her forehead lasted a little longer than every day.

************************************************

She stole another glance at him as he easily navigated the busy streets of Kolkata, something was different about him today he had barely looked at her since he had picked at her almost 45 minutes before and this was unusual it almost seemed like he was afraid to look at her.

The car had stopped in a middle class neighbouhood of Kolkata, took her hand gently and lead her to towards an old house, the house looked clean and gave the feeling of home.

Rishab took out his key and opened the door for her, they were finally here, in the torturous 45 minute drive he had thought about his decision a 100 times, he had been tempted to turn the car around and never tell her anything, he knew he could lie to her, bask in her warmth and make sure she never knew, he could. But hiding things from prerna had never ended up well and she deserved to know.

Prerna had looked around the house, taking it in, the walls were painted a dull yellow, white curtains on the windows the place looked ordinary. she picked up the fresh roses in the vase on the coffee table before a painting had caught her eye, the women in the painting was beautiful not the beautiful that left you spell bound, but the one that made you appreciate the simplicity of life. She had an idea who it was.

“She is your mother, isn’t she” she asked her fingers tracing the beautiful women’s face.

“How are you so sure”

“You have her eyes” she said plainly

“You’re right this is my mother and Mohini Basus elder sister Snehal Bajaj” he said, his wife icy cold.

What??

“It’s going to hurt, what I am going to say is going to hurt like hell, you may hate me,scorn me, judge me but please listen to me till the end. Please” he had almost begged.

She had simply nodded finding herself incapable of words shocked by the revelation and uncertain of what was to come.

He turned around walked to the window, gripping the curtains tightly and began the tale“My father was a lawyer for my maternal grandfather, he and my mother fell in love while he was working for my grandfather, their social status was different but my grandfather valued loyalty and ethics more than money so they got married and lived peacefully for a few years until my nanu got sick, he knew he was on his death bed so he wanted to transfer his property to someone capable my father was the first choice, this didn’t sit well with Mohni Basu who wanted all that money for herself and was ashamed her sister had married a middle class man she accused my father of trying to molest her and everyone believed her my father was jailed for a crime he did not commit and died in the jail a week later, my mother was devastated by her sisters betrayal, shamed by the society and my father’s death was the last nail in the coffin, she lost her will to live and committed suicide. I was 14 at that time” his eyes blood shot, every muscle of his body tense and his voice pained.

She moved towards him in an attempt to comfort him only to be stopped by his hardened gaze “I am not done yet”

“I wanted to hurt her, make her life the same hell she had made mine legally doing it wouldn’t be a punishment enough and the best way to destroy her was to hurt her beloved son, destroy him beyond repair and the only blow that I thought would be able to inflict the pain I wanted was if I took you away from him, I had no intention of marrying you my initial plan was to just separate both of you but by some shrewd game of destiny you were the woman my daughter choose for herself. You weren’t part of the plan, you never were I had many ways to bring you in kuki’s life but I choose the one I knew would destroy Anurag” He finished but still didn’t look at her.

She had felt something breaking inside her then, she looked at her hand the roses she had been admiring, were long crushed by her fingers their blood red color staining her fingers and she couldn’t help thinking if her heart had broken and bled like that too.

This was a heavy chapter. What do you think Prerna’s reaction would be. Let me know your views your response is what makes writing worth it.

Bajaj is afraid of her reaction & her decision after knowing about his darkest secrets.

He loves her and can't afford to lose her.

Even though he knows that if he wants he could hide this from her all his life, he still wants to tell her as it would be best if she gets to know about it from him than others.

Mohini😡🤬

How could someone do such a thing with own sister😡

Poor Rishabh, lost both his parents at 14🥺

He wanted to take revenge on Mohini by hurting Anurag.

I know Prerna is hurt, but I wish she forgives Rishabh, and they both move on in their life.

Lovely update, continue soon.
