Chapter 5

There was complete silence in Rishabh’s room since the past one hour. While he sat on the bed in a state of shock, Prerna was seated on the couch and she tried to put Kukki to sleep.

Prerna wanted to send Kukki home but the child denied leaving her mother’s side, especially after the way her father had behaved with her. Kukki had seen Rishabh get angry at others when they would be careless around her but he had never even scolded her before today. She was anxious as to how he had failed to understand her gestures. Before Prerna had come into her life, it was only Rishabh who could decode every gesture that Kukki made. There were times when he would even understand her silence, then how come he failed today?

Kukki kept sobbing in Prerna’s arms till she almost fell asleep. Prerna was having a hard time controlling her own tears as she held Kukki close to her chest. She knew that her daughter would get more worried if she saw tears in Prerna’s eyes as well. This is what Prerna had been dreading over the last few days. She knew that Kukki would break down when she came in front of her father and he would fail to recognise her. She cursed herself for leaving Kukki alone outside the room. Prerna was aware that Rishabh was constantly looking at her as she patted Kukki to sleep.

Prerna felt Kukki’s breathing become even and heard a few soft snores; placing a pillow under Kukki’s head she walked to Rishabh’s bed. She knew that she had a lot to explain to him, sitting on the edge of his bed and Prerna took a deep breath before she started speaking

‘Uss din aap ne pucha tha na ki hum ne aisi hi shadi kaise kar li? Aap ko laga ki hum ek dusre se bahut pyaar karte hain isiliye, lekin hamari shadi ki sab se important wajah hamari beti hai.. Kukki..’

She turned slightly to look at Kukki, Rishabh’s eyes following her gaze. One by one Prerna narrated to him how she had met Kukki and saved her. She kept pausing to gauge Rishabh’s reaction and gave him a few minutes to absorb her words before she continued. Also, she needed some time to think about a proper explanation which would indicate that for them Kukki’s health was the primary reason to get married. She couldn’t tell him about their deal and that she knew nothing about Kukki being Rishabh’s daughter until a few days after their wedding.

‘You made it a point to be aware of every small happenings in her life, so you knew about me even before I had come to meet you to ask a favour for my friend. Jis din aapse milne aapke ghar aai thi uss din pata chala ki vo aapki beti hai. When you told me that you wanted to marry me so that I could help you to bring Kukki out of her shell and recover, I said yes without a second thought because somehow I could already feel a connection between me and Kukki. And she had accepted me as her mother in no time. I know ki mujhe aapko pehle hi sach bata dena chahiye tha par main nahi janti thi ki aap kaise react karenge. Mujhe darr tha ki kahin aapki tabiyat jyada kharab nahi ho jaye, I was just waiting for the right time to tell you the truth’

Rishabh kept his eyes fixed on Kukki as he tried to register everything that Prerna just said. There were several thoughts running in Rishabh’s head in less than a minute. He could feel his head throb because of all this stress.

‘Urm.. I think I’ll just rest for a while.. If you don’t mind’

Prerna looked up when she heard Rishabh speak in a low voice. She just nodded her head in response and helped him lie down properly before she went back and sat next to Kukki. She did know that this was going to be difficult but she didn’t know that it would be so difficult.

On one hand her daughter was heartbroken and on the other hand her husband was in stress. She knew that Rishabh being quiet did not mean that he was not affected by this news. In fact his silence was scaring her, she just wanted to be sure that he was okay but she knew that she needed to give him some time to cope with this news. She shut her eyes and sent a silent prayer to her lord to give her some strength to go through this.

Though Rishabh’s eyes were closed he was sure that Prerna was crying because he could hear her sniff a few times. He kept processing the information that he had just received. He had a daughter, whom he had forgotten just like everything else in his life. How terrible she must be feeling right now; he couldn’t recognise his own daughter and on top of that he scolded her. Yet as she stole glances at him before she slept there was only love in Kukki’s eyes for him. His wife with whom he assumed that he must have been madly in love with, had just revealed to him the real reason why they got married. He heard Prerna sniff once again and his heart constrained. He half-opened his eyes to look at her and saw her wipe her tears as Kukki started to wake up from her nap. He couldn’t understand that if he had married her just for the sake of his daughter then why was he so affected by Prerna? Why did he feel so strongly for her in his heart? What relationship did they exactly share? This chain of thoughts came to a halt when Rishabh heard Prerna take Kukki’s name

‘Kukki..’

Prerna patted her daughter gently and Kukki opened her eyes at Prerna’s touch. She looked at her mother with tears in her eyes and wrapped her tiny arms around Prerna’s waist, hiding her face in Prerna’s lap and she started sobbing again.

‘Kukki… kya hua baccha, apa wapas kyun ro rahe ho?’

Kukki kneeled on the couch and shifted closer to Prerna, she pointed towards Rishabh who had now closed his eyes once again and acted to be sleeping. In gestures Kukki, started explaining Prerna why she was crying and Prerna voiced her thoughts

‘Papa ke wajah se aapko rona aa raha hai?’

Kukki nodded her head affirmatively and fresh tears rolled down her cheek. Prerna quickly wiped them off and kissed Kukki on her forehead, before she started giving Kukki an explanation for Rishabh’s behaviour

‘Kukki, aapko pata hai na ki Papa ki tabiyat kharab hai? Toh uski wajah se doctor na unko bohut kadvi kadvi medicines de rahe hai. Aur Papa ko unka favourite khana bhi nahi khane de rahe. Jab aap bimar hote ho aur aap ko bhi kadvi davi khani padti hai ya jab Mamma aapko aapki favourite dish nahi deti, toh aap kaise grumpy ho jate ho; vaise hi Papa bhi thode grumpy ho gaye hain. Vo aapko dantna nahi chahte the, galti se unhone uss tone main keh diya hoga..’

Prerna tried her best to come up with a silly excuse to cheer up her daughter’s mood and hoped that Kukki would buy her it, she was somewhat successful in her task because Kukki gave her a small nod after a few seconds. She then questioned Prerna through gestures that why did her father not understand her gestures? Prerna now understood that Kukki was actually more upset because Rishabh couldn’t decode her gestures earlier, not just because he had scolded her

‘Vo beta… Papa ki neend theek se puri nahi hui thi dekho abhi wapas so gaye, tabhi vo theek se samajh nahi paye honge. Warna aapko pata hai na ki aapke Papa aapko kitne aache se samajhte hain aur aapse kitna sara pyaar karte hain. Vo kabhi jaan bhuj kar aisa kuch nahi karenge jise unki Kukki ko bura lagae, hai na?’

Kukki glanced at Rishabh’s sleeping form and then she looked at Prerna. She was right, Kukki knew that her father loved her the most and he would never try to hurt her on purpose, she felt bad he was hurt and was in so much pain. Slowly she got off the couch and walked to Rishabh’s bed, she tip-toed to reach his height. Being very careful of not disturbing his sleep, Kukki placed a soft kiss on her daddy’s cheek and ran back to Prerna to give her another hug. Prerna pulled Kukki closer to herself and placed a soft kiss in her hair. After a minute when they broke the hug Kukki rubbed her tummy and gestured that she was hungry. Clasping Kukki’s tiny hand in her hand Prerna took her out of the room to get her something to eat, totally oblivious to the fact that Rishabh had been awake all this while.

After a few moments when Rishabh was sure that he was alone in the room, he sat straight and took his head in his hands. He clutched it tightly and groaned; in frustration and in pain.

‘Why don’t I remember anything? Why did this have to happen to me? Have I done something so wrong in my life that God decided to punish me in such a way? Apne aap se judi ek baat mujhe yaad nahi. Na aapna naam pata tha, na apni pehchaan janta hun. Meri beti hai, jiske bare main kuch yaad nahi mujhe. Prerna ko bhi main bhul chuka tha. Main kon hun, meri life main akhir kya kya hua hai, yeh accident kaise hua, mujhe kuch bhi theek se nahi pata. Aur na jane kitni aisi baatein hain mujhe yaad nahi, main janta hun ki waqt aane par Prerna mujhe sab bata degi. Lekin main aapne aap ko itni aasani se kaise bhul gaya’

Rishabh didn’t realise himself when tears escaped his eyes as he kept cursing himself for not being able to recall a single moment of his life. He kept straining himself to remember at least one thing about his life but failed, he groaned and threw his head back in the pillow. Covering his face with one arm, he started sobbing silently and tried to get rid of the agony that had consumed him in the last few hours.
