Daag, Silsila, Doosra Aadmi, Kabhi Kabhi... these were all Yash Chopra masterpieces before Bollywood ever heard about Sridevi. There are more of course.
In fact, his downfall started with Chandni and Lamhe. While aesthetically pleasing, they were rather silly films in comparison with his earlier work.
Guess I have too much time on my hands 😆 and also some of my older relatives would have this debate so often.
BR and Yash Chopra are brothers. Even though wiki seems to credit Yash Chopra as director in some of his movies; BR Chopra is the one credited with timeless classics like waqt, ittefaq, dhool ka phool, etc. and many more. Also BR's style was also more nuanced. You watch his 1-2 films and you will get a sense of his film-making style being quite different from his brother. He made the iconic mahabharat, deftly balancing multi-layered characters for a huge ensemble cast and had good partnership with his writers in the movie/teleserial crafting process.
In those times, Yash Chopra was considered as the lesser-than version of the two (don't kill the messenger here, am just quoting what people would say...maybe Rekhaji can give her opinion on this)
I would agree that Daag, Deewar, Silsila, Kabhi Kabhi, Doosra Aadmi, Lamhe are rightly attributed as Yash Chopra films. Although Daag and Deewar were hits, the other movies, while appreciated by critics were duds at the box office. I did like Trishool too, as a movie.
So in truth, Amitabh Bachchan helped put Yash Chopra on the map as a romantic movie director (but not all were hits). And it is also true that Yash Chopra piggy-backed on his brother's successful movies. He did have a few decent movies, too.
(and have no part in the rest of the debate in here).
