Akshay Kumar: At the top of his game!Posted bychauhanvishekMarch 14, 2020Posted inUncategorized
Akshay Kumar’s Mission Mangal became the actors fastest film to breach the 100cr mark despite competition from John Abraham’s Batla House. Housefull 4, despite being panned across the board went onto do terrific business. It became the actors top grossing film. Then came GoodNewwz, which was probably Akshay’s most urban film ever. This film also did terrific business and closed around Rs200 crore mark. In a span of 5 months, he had 3 releases and all managed to do near Rs 200cr. This is also an amazing feat as all 3 films were his highest grossers. It gets even better, last year he starred in Kesari, which went on to do 150cr at the boxoffice making it Kumar’s personal best at that point of time.In one year this man delivered four films and all are now top four grossers in his illustrious career, a feat probably unimaginable in today’s times. A clear indicator that he is in the best phase of his career and at the peak of his popularity. Akshay’s films off late are more multiplex friendly then single screen. Bulk of his films business is coming from high end plexes rather than small town single screens. Goodnewwz cementing the fact, that this actor has the Plex audiences under his spell. This wasn’t always the case with The Khiladi.
Akshay made his debut with Saugandh and by 1994 was an established action star. In 1994 alone he had 11 releases. Including Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra. Subsequently these action masala films stopped working and Akshay moved on to films which focussed more on him as an actor. Sangharsh and Jaanwar did that for him. The actor in him came out.
In 2000, Akshay struck gold with Hera Pheri. His comic timing was in full display. The audiences and critics alike loved this avatar of the actor. Since then action took a back seat and Akshay focussed more on drama and comedy. He successfully broke his action image and moved onto drama/comic genre. He milked these genres belting hits after hits.
This transformation many are not able to achieve. It was with sheer talent and hardwork that he broke it and established himself in the drama/comic space. Even doing smaller roles in ensemble casts and walking away with the seetis and taalis. Andaaz, Khakee, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Aitraaz, Garam Masala, Phir Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, Namastey London, Heyy Baby, Bhool Bhulaiya, Welcome, Singh is King and the Housefull series. Firmly establishing him as a reliable dependable star, who could deliver hits in this space.
Then these comic/drama films started to yield negative results for the actor. Barring the Housefull series and Rowdy Rathore he didnt meet much success with other outings. Akshay realised that his films werent being lapped up in multiplexes and this was the new market that he needed to conquer to establish himself all over again.
Special 26 was the stepping stone in this direction. The film opened lower than ABCD but due to excellent word of mouth went on to do good business at the ticket windows. Baby and Airlift further cemented his status as a star who could drive plex audiences. He cut down on his masala outings and focussed solely on issue based films that appealed more to thinking audiences. Rustom, Jolly LLb 2, Toilet, Padman and Gold followed.
Akshay had successfully migrated to being a darling of the plex audiences without alienating his core audiences. He kept his image intact in films and
chose films which spoke of relevant social issues. He made them in controlled budgets, targeted his audience well and no one lost money in the prrocess. Hits after Hits followed.
So, Akshay Kumar who started off as an action star then reinvented himself into a comic/drama actor .Then again reinvented himself into an actor whose films dealt with serious social issues. From being called a single screen star to then successfully migrate to filling Gold classes in South Delhi and South Mumbai. Akshay kumar has come a long way. He has managed to do this on his talent and sheer hardwork. The way he balances quantity with quality is a masterclass in itself.
Akshay now is going for the kill, with plexes and single screen audiences both behind him, he now is upping his ante. He is attempting bigger films with bigger producers and directors. Sooryavanshi is probably one of the hottest films in recent times. Although it’s release date has been pushed ahead, mark my words it will create mayhem whenever it releases. He also has Prithviraj and Bacchan Pandey, big ticket entertainers, which can wreak havoc across the country. He is definitely in the best phase of his career and we are loving it.
