I read lots of conversations on the Tanhaji vs. Chapaak release where people were like they have the budget for only 1 movie and they would prefer to watch Tanhaji.
I fear the same for Panga vs. Street Dancer.
Women-centric films are anyways risky in this male-dominated industry. By clashing with a masala entertainer which caters to the lowest common denominator, it's risking it further. No matter what people say about catering to different genres, truth is cinema-going audience is going to choose one out of the two films and that's usually the one with more masala ingredients.
Chapaak and Panga are both content-driven films, and not big on the masala factor. A woman-centric film needs more visibility and exposure.
I also think it's a mistake to clash 2 women-centric films e..g. Parineeti's The Girl on the train vs. Vidya Balan's Shakuntala biopic. This will eat up the business of both films.
I wish people would take more calculated risks, considering how male-dominated the industry is and how even girls don't end up supporting actresses all that much ( most of the hate DP received on this forum is from girls only).
Maybe I am being too idealistic?
