I am a relatively new poster, although I have been reading the forum for quite some time now. There has been a lot of discussion about song selection. Some members feel that one participant is getting better songs than the other. I feel that the contestants have a say in what songs they sing. Whenever a contestant chooses an easy song or a non-competition-like song, the judges blame the participant for the choice (e.g. Jayant in the Alka Yagnik episode, Prakriti in yesterdays episode, Ishmeet in previous VOI etc). They do not say that the participant was "given" a bad song. Also the personal choice of the participant is reflected in the songs they sing. for example, Aishwarya prefers older songs form the 50s and 60s - Mose chhal, mohabbat aisi dhadkan hai, man mohana, nigahen milane ko jee chahta hai, aaj jaane ki zid na karo etc. She even sang soja rajkumari with her grandmother. Soniya most often sang songs that suited her voice and style and excelled at them. Prakriti usually goes for westernized songs and they suit her the most. Anwesha, from what I have seen, prefers mid 70s - 90s songs, e.g. Kis mor se jaate hain, chhoti si kahani, ek Radha ek Meera, pal do pal ka saath humara, dere dere, etc. Vyom likes to sing Rafi-songs from the 60s. I could go on and on.
The personal taste of the participants is clearly reflected in the songs they sing. So I don't understand the outrage over song selection. What do you think?
