Soulmate:- n. a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner
That would be the dictionary definition of the word. A term severely misunderstood but extensively overused. Nonchalantly thrown at every other romantic relationship out there, it’s unfortunate that the word, so profound, has been reduced to a cliche, prince-meets-princess-and-happily-ever-after concept. Then what exactly is a 'soulmate'? With literally thousands of definitions and interpretations through the course of several centuries, there isn't really an agreed upon standard. However the following quote comes close to defining the concept as something that I personally, have always believed in.
“A soulmate is an ongoing connection with another individual that the soul picks up again in various times and places over lifetimes. We are attracted to another person at a soul level not because that person is our unique complement, but because by being with that individual, we are somehow provided with an impetus to become whole ourselves."
-Edgar Cayce
Their Story...
A girl abandoned by both her parents and a family she used to call her own, found herself embraced by the two people she now considers her parents. Forced to learn to make a place for herself among people who were a family without her. Going through every single day, trying and repeatedly failing to assure her roommate, once her closest friend, that she wasn’t trying to take her place. Having to listen to the constant reminders and perpetual taunts on how she never belonged, would never truly be a daughter of the house, she grew up knowing exactly where she stood with her new family. A daughter to only her Bade Papa and Badi Maa, a daughter-equivalent to some and an outsider to others. Her eternal aspiration to find a place where she truly belonged, to create an identity she could call her own. A girl who had been taught to make her own decisions, used to fighting her own battles, big and small, understood the value of independence. Always pragmatic in dealing with situations, she was quick to realize, happily-ever-afters were guaranteed only in tales. Prince Charming did not hold the allure, he once did. The concept of lifelong companionship more daunting than reassuring. Her only expectation from her partner in life was trust and understanding. That was until, Abir.
A boy who had lost his father, his closest friend and role model, suddenly found himself living among the myriad of unanswered questions and endless secrets that had made their permanent place in the house they called his home. Learning to recognize the masks and look through the facade, he discovered the manipulative and selfish persona that was his mother’s true identity. Unwilling in becoming a part of the charade, he quickly took on the responsibility of being the only sane voice in the family. No longer having the privilege of being a child, he adapted to playing the role of the older brother and best friend to his younger brother. Suffocated by all the pretense and scared of getting lost among the secrets threatening to engulf and erase his identity, he chose to take flight, never staying put, getting lost and finding himself amidst the plethora of undiscovered and under-appreciated. Failing to find solace in the place they called home, he turned towards the almighty for comfort. In pursuit of the answers to the ever-increasing questions, he discovered the ability to truly see the abundance of soul-stirring and awe-inspiring experiences always around and often overlooked. Learning to appreciate the unfamiliar as much as the mundane. Through every chance he grasped, every encounter that moved him, he grew, instilling in him the belief in faith, destiny and love. Becoming a wanderer, preferring the company of his own, never really finding a good enough reason to stop. That was until, Mishti.
She found in him a friend, a confidante and a companion. Someone that understood her, trusted her and stood by her, lending her the support and comfort every time she needed it, without her having to seek it. Teaching her to not be afraid, to embrace life, to always take that chance and to stop second guessing her decisions. His unwavering belief in her, despite the worst odds, re-instilling the confidence that had been chipped away by the incessant taunts and abuse thrown her way for years.
He found in her, his inspiration, his partner, his best friend. The one person he found himself wanting to learn more about, someone that he admired and looked up to, someone who finally believed in the same truth that he did and more importantly someone who stood for it. An open book, an uncorrupted soul, illuminating and strong. The brightest light, lending the colors to his canvas, she brought the answers to all his questions. The ultimate destination to his long quest.
Mishti found her place, her home
and Abir, his reason to stay, his anchor.
Together they learnt to give and take,
to ask and answer.
They were different yet equals.
They were 2 wholes but complete only when united.
They were Mishbir.
