WHY ? (few answers from google users at Quora)

Because he wanted to invest most of his movie earnings from Indian audience in some upcoming malls of Canada(and not India), and there are high surcharges for foreigners to invest (~15–40%) in property in a lot of developed countries.

And when you are going to invest millions of dollars, even 15–40% translates to another millions of dollars. For that money saved, all your “Patriotism”, “Indian-ness” and “Social responsibility” for India that you show in award shows and movies like Padman, Jolly LLB 2, Rustom, Baby, Airlift, Namaste London etc, goes down the drain and you sell your Indian citizenship and take up the Canadian citizenship for your personal benefits.

Of course, it is a personal choice and I am no one to criticize that decision of Akshay Kumar. The only problem I have is that he lies upfront about it in his media interviews that he has a “dual citizenship”.

I want you to read till the end.

Case 1: he took Canadian citizenship, as he was interested to buy real estate and assets in Canada (I know there are stories of him visiting Canada for his father’s Cancer treatment and all that, but those are just stories to hide the reality, if India doesn’t have the adequate medical facilities, and all, if he is so much in love with Canada, then why doesn’t he just goes there.)

Case 2: Alternatively, one case may be that he was given an honorary Canadian Citizenship (and a Law degree) but there was an issue as India does not allow anyone to have dual citizenship, so he thought: yeah, but I can be a Canadian! And he is telling his fans: “… I have a dual citizenship..”

My dear friend, our (or my) country does not allow dual citizenship, who are you fooling? We all have smartphones.

Now, in both cases, one thing is evident which is that Akshay Kumar is no hero, we Indians have a bad habit of glorifying people we admire, we are too gullible to understand the intentions of the people for whom we are nothing but hens laying golden eggs.

He is an actor, so is Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Aamir.

Some of my friends will say, that he has friends and family here in Canada so he took citizenship. What is the harm in that?
Okay. If you do not see the harm in that, will it be acceptable when I say: ‘ ‘Shahrukh Khan, is offered UAE citizenship, as after his ad campaign was a grand success, and he has fans there, so he gave up his Indian Citizenship.’

There is a video of Akshay Kumar, when he visited Toronto, Canada in which he is seen saying: “ I must tell you: this is my home, Toronto is my Home. After I retire from this industry(Bollywood), I am going to settle here.”

In the initial days of their career, they all used to be actors but, as they gained popularity, they turned into businessmen. Now, if a businessman thinks of cutting his costs, by taking up Canadian citizenship what wrong has he done? {As he had to pay heavy taxes, on his properties there in Canada. Apparently, he gave his citizenship, to save on tax (funnily painful)

The issue is with us, we have to stop idolising, may it be our actors, our sportsmen, and our politicians. They are all doing their work. Just that, but why are we sitting idle, defending or bashing them.

There is a reason: why Salman Khan, always do some unrealistic things in his movies?

which is the same as Why Akshay Kumar always takes up patriotic and Nationalist movies?

which is the same as why Shah Rukh still is a Romantic hero?

because

Jo bikta hai, vo tikkta hai.

One who sells, stays.

P.S. if you have to be a fan of anyone be a fan of the Armed Services, Policemen, firefighters, and all of those who risk their lives so that we are safe. We are indebted to only them and no one else.

Happy to discuss, in comments.

Thanks for reaading.

Originally Answered: Why did Akshay Kumar give up his Indian citizenship?

Yes, you heard it right because that actually is the truth. Akshay Kumar is a True Nationalist for right wingers who do patriotic movies unlike Bollywood Khans, even though Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir khan, Salman Khan has played Patriotic roles in several movies alas that’s still anti-nationalism for Indian Right Wings.

Surprisingly Indian right wingers never questioned Akshay Kumar’s Canadian citizenship while living, working and earning in India.

Interestingly its not that he was born in Canada which made him Canadian, he was offered Canadian citizenship and then he accepted but irony is he always considered to be a true Indian while Khans do not have that privilege.

Akshay Kumar who left Indian citizenship for Canada has confessed earlier that he is in love with Canada and he got the citizenship after he got a doctorate from The University of Windsor. This is what he had to say about it “I have a strong affiliation with Canada and also have dual citizenship. It’s a place that I really love—the open terrain, the scenery, the wide roads and the clean streets. It’s the complete contrast of my homeland, although I love India for all the opposite reasons and it’s my home. I was honored with a doctorate degree from The University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, for my contribution to the Indian film industry and for my social work in Canada.”

The news about Akshay Kumar having dual citizenship sounds like lying to his fans with his statement that he has dual citizenship just to save his Indian fan base.

Truth is India doesn’t accept dual-citizenship. That means, he has to give up his Indian citizenship for Canada and is no more an official citizen of India. He said that Canadian government offered him a citizenship so he accepted it. What if the Pakistan government gives any of the Khans citizenship offer?

Do you think any Khan Will accept it?

No, In fact Shahrukh Khan got the offer and he didn’t heed to it.

Akshay has given several hit movies beside 57 flops since 1991-2016 through Bollywood by succeeding in various genres such as illogical action movies of the 1990s to disastrous comedies of the 2000s. However, since his last few jingoistic films like Baby, Airlift and Holiday his avatar changed from Khiladi to Nationalist. All thanks to ultra-nationalists who can get fooled with little nationalism and turn violent with a little dissent.

At one point Akshay make movies and videos showing how big patriot he is and on the other hand, he took up Canadian citizenship. Although he has all rights to do it and it is not illegal, but the ‘hoopla’ about jingoistic avatars and abusing is Khans on other hand is what going to spoil the entertainment and atmosphere.

What does that mean?

The way he said he loves the open terrain, clean roads and the scenery which is totally in contrast with his homeland, what did that mean? We understand India is comparatively less clean and full of chaos than other countries but that is the place where he was born and where he got his fame.

Whatever his reasons (financial?) for having Canadian citizenship, Akshay Kumar does not have “honorary” Canadian Citizenship. It requires a special decree and full support by by both Houses of The Parliament of Canada. In its history, it has only been bestowed on six individuals. They are Raoul Wallenberg (1985), Nelson Mandela (2001), Tenzin Gyatso, The Dalai Lama (2006), Aung San Suu Kyi (2007), Karim Aga Khan IV (2010) and, Malala Yousafzai (2014). With the exception of Raoul Wallenberg, who was executed as a result of his humanitarian work, and Karim Aga Khan, who basically bought his (just as his grandfather bought the British honorific of “His Highness”), every other recipient of “Honorary Canadian Citizenship” has been a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Mr. Akshay Kumar - whom I do not know - flatters himself unduly if he thinks he belongs in that company. Canadians hold Honorary Canadian Citizenship in such high esteem that they insisted that Aung San Suu Kyi be stripped of hers (2018) due to her actions over the issue of Rohingya Muslim refugees.

Mr. Akshay Kumar is not an “Honorary Canadian Citizen”. If he says he is, he is a liar.

Unlike Pakistan, India does not permit dual citizenship. It is permitted to apply for Indian citizenship if you are a person of Indian origin, born abroad, who has been resident in India for one year, if non-possession of Indian citizenship creates undue hardship. The first person to have their citizenship thus restored was Farooq Abdullah, who had abandoned his Indian citizenship and taken Pakistani citizenship in order to be part of the Pakistani delegation to the United Nations. He later applied for re-instatement of Indian citizenship on the grounds of “undue hardship” but had to fight all the way to the Supreme Court of India to get it. So, while Farooq Abdullah now holds Indian citizenship, Pakistan did not require him to relinquish Pakistani citizenship although India made him swear allegiance to India. Historically, India has taken citizenship very seriously. Applying for and receiving another country's citizenship automatically strips you of Indian citizenship.

If Mr. Akshay Kumar claims he is a dual citizen, he should have documents stating his Indian citizenship has been re-instated. This would mean that India does not recognize his Canadian citizenship. Mr. Akshay Kumar has been travelling on a Canadian passport - he has been exercising a part of his rights as a Canadian citizen. This means he cannot be an Indian citizen. The Law of Nations (i.e. International Law) does not permit travel on more than one passport, regardless of how many passports or citizenships you may hold. When you depart your point of origin, the passport you choose to use shows which country carries the responsibility for protecting your safety when you travel. By using a Canadian passport, Mr. Akshay Kumar has no right to the consular or diplomatic services of India. By using a Canadian passport, Mr. Akshay Kumar has shown he is a Canadian citizen who has taken a citizenship oath, an oath of allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada. (She used to be Queen of Pakistan also, which was why Pakistan has dual nationality, but she was never Queen of India.) You cannot be an Indian citizen and swear an oath of allegiance to a foreign head of state: the Constitution of India has expressly forbidden it.

If Mr. Akshay Kumar says he has “dual citizenship”, I would say he is a liar.

If The Republic of India is to maintain the honour and dignity of its “single citizenship” rule, it will have to be stricter in its interpretation of “undue hardship” when re-instating citizenship. It will have to require an abandonment and relinquishment of all other citizenships. It'll also have to be more rigorous in informing foreign countries when one of their nationals have applied for, and received, Indian citizenship. In addition, it will have to make it very clear to its consular and diplomatic officers that their services will not be provided to non-Indian nationals, regardless of origin or economic status, unless India receives a formal written request, for diplomatic assistance, from their country of citizenship. “I am Indian.” should be a statement of pride in and of itself, not mean “I am Indian because I am too poor to purchase the nationality of another country.”!

Mr. Akshay Kumar decided to abandon his Indian citizenship and assume Canadian citizenship for business reasons.

Mr. Akshay Kumar claims he was advised to seek treatment in Canada for his father. I see. When the mother of Mr. Imran Khan, the current Prime Minister of Pakistan, became ill with terminal cancer, he took her to Mumbai for treatment. He was living in London at the time. He has sisters living in the US. He also has a sister who is a doctor in Pakistan. These were all options for him but he chose Mumbai. Canada has excellent cancer-care facilities but so does Mumbai. It also has an environment familiar to an Indian patient, which helps in their recovery - just a little something to think about when looking at actual motivation.

I think Mr. Akshay Kumar needs to be more honest.

It could be that he took the Canadian citizenship for a better living but it seems that many politicians, actors, industrialist, assume India as just a business center and not a place for living, no matter even if they have born and brought up in India. Amir Khans’s wife Kiran Rao asks her husband if they should leave India just because of some hype of intolerance in the country. Kamal Haasan once said on the media channels that he wants to leave the country when he faced some protest against one of his controversial movie, to which he later felt gilt of, but this somehow showed his actual mindset. Many politicians have money in the Swiss accounts scammed out of infrastructure development in India. Industrialist Vijay Malya did some thing same but in a different way. For such kind of people India is merely business.

On the other hand there were martyrs who sacrificed everything, even their lives for India to be a better place.

We all look only for our better future and better opportunities in life but the question is that what is our contribution to the country, which gave us everything. And please don’t say we paid taxes as that is the basic and mandatory thing at least we need to do. I really praise those few politicians, NGOs, social workers, Indian Army who give their every effort for the country.

The real reason for Akshay's attachment to Canada (Read to the the Punjabis and Indians there)

Akshay Kumar first visited Canada in 1995 to shoot Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi . Being an upcoming bollywood star with Punjabi roots, he received a lot of love from the Punjabis and Indians out there and he happend to build some great rapport and connections with the who's who from Canada at that time.

Somewhere around the same time, Akshay’s father was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer and India didn't really have medical facilities with international standards at that time. Akshay was looking forward to take his father abroad for better medical treatment and his friends in Canada insisted that he should visit Canada for further treatment. They immensely supported Akshay's family at that time and even the Canadian government facilitated his father's treatment in every possible way (His friends had a good influence there). Unfortunately Akshay lost his father to cancer, but couldn't forget the support and love he got from Canada during that tough phase of his life.

This immense support to him and his ailing father created a bond between Canada and Akshay Kumar, since then he has a soft corner for the country and thus the mutual love and respect between them.

But this does not mean his love for motherland India is compromised in any way. Akshay has done tremendous social work in India through his monetary contributions towards farmers/ Servicemen and has played a thought leaders part when its comes to social awareness regarding Swach bharat movement, women's health and hygene, farmers condition etc. Every Popular personality has a few haters who want to drag them down for who they are and Akshays haters find no other points to drag him down than this Canadian citizenship issue. Thus very often you find people hitting the same point again and again even though its proved to be false.

These links are about his work from the platforms that are considered to be neutral and perhaps far from being nationalist.

11 Times Akshay Kumar's Contribution And Support Made This World A Better Place To Live!

Just A List Of All The Good Things Akshay Kumar Has Done In 2017 Alone

Some argue that Akshay has been going overboard with his Nationalist image. They argue that All the social initatives that he has taken up, all the monetary assistance that he has provided has been done just to Show off that he loves India and is a hardcore nationalist.

Can those people tell me what else does one need to do in order to show he really loves and cares for his nation?

There is no official answer to this but this is just my understanding. Upvote if it make sense else downvote.

We have this tendency to move to a better place if we get an opportunity. For example, people move to cities from villages, metro cities from small towns because we have identified that they are better places to live in. The same way we have identified that developed countries like USA, UK, Canada are better places to live. Remember, how we felt last time when we heard that some of our friend or relative got PR in US/Canada. Its like a dream come true to many. And there is enough truth in it. There is better lifestyle, better opportunities, better infrastructure, healthcare, social security, better environment etc. Who don’t want their children to get those facilities? Even money can’t buy you all of them.

So, when Akshay was offered Canadian citizenship, he simply accepted it. He and his family can avail all the luxuries of Indian citizenship being a Canadian citizen and overseas citizen of India. He is not loosing anything but getting something extra! His children will have a better future being a Canadian citizen.

What is he loosing?

  1. Right to vote in India!
  2. Having Aadhaar card! (He can have it though)
  3. Right to Information(RTI)!
  4. Cheaper ticket for Taj Mahal!
  5. Etc…etc….etc!

Do you think he cares about any of the above?

His personal attachment for the place is also one of the factor as his father was treated in Canada when he was suffering for cancer. Canada is also called second home for Punjabi’s. Akshay is Punjabi too.

I think these are enough reasons why he took up Canadian citizenship.

Edit… http://www.acadman.in/akshay-kumar-indian-citizen-government-india

Akshay Kumar is Indian citizen and he is merely an honorary citizen of Canada which is not at all related to passport citizenship.

Have a look at the video below -

What is Honorary Citizenship?

Honorary citizenship is a status conferred by a country to a foreign individual whom it considers to be especially admirable or otherwise worthy of the distinction.

Honorary citizenship does not carry with it the rights and privileges of ordinary citizenship, and such status does not confer any special entry, travel or immigration benefits upon the honoree. It also does not impose additional duties or responsibilities on the honoree.

So, even if you are an honorary citizen of Canada, you would still need a visa to visit the country

Looks like he took the so called “Honory Citizenship” & took OCI Status to continue working here- as he did not vote today! Quite a fake - Bharat Kumar!

He is a shrewd businessman - calculated his profits of giving up Indian Citizenship and found it a good deal.

Personally am always okay with people who are clear in their single minded focus of Money ; but my only concern is that they should stop pouring crocodile tears in name of sentiments, concerns, army, etc. Plus they must be honest to everyone around about their intentions - which are clearly monetary here.

Probably He is trying to salvage his family’s career in future - Sad Truth!

No Sentiments in Future Mr. Kumar oops Bhatia oops Whatever!

INDIA NEEDS TO THROW ALL THESE BOLLYWOOD STARS INTO ARABIAN SEA in my humble opinion & give Star Statuses to Daily Municipal Workers, Administrators, Law Keepers, Health CareTakers, Social Heroes!

It's a place that I really love—the open terrain, the scenery, the wide roads and the clean streets.”, he said in an interview in 2010. He is probably thinking that everyone will believe his lie about holding a “dual citizenship” of India and Canada, since a very small fraction of well-travelled people are aware about citizenship and visa rules around the world.

India has no provision of dual citizenship with any country. There is a free movement agreement with Nepal. Apart from that, at most, a foreign person(of Indian origin) can become an OCI(Overseas citizen of India) which is a special kind of visa(and not citizenship), which allows someone to travel, work and stay in India without any restrictions for 10 years per renewal. Clearly, he lies to avoid jeopardising his selling point of patriotism/social responsibility for India since a lot of his blockbuster movies cater to that category, latest one being ‘Gold’, and he wants to continue minting more money from that genre of movies for his remaining acting career, leveraging audience’s sentiments.

Everything is planned.

Edit : I am in no way denying the social impact his movies must be having towards the improvement of society. I have seen some of these movies as well in theatres and appreciate his acting skills. Also, hands down, he is a much better person in the Industry compared to the likes of Salman khan and Sanjay dutt. This question and answer are not related to his acting skills or social impact of his movies in any way. So don’t relate these two things.

Akshay Kumar has taken up Canadian citizenship for the same reason that a large chunk of Indians opt for it. He has taken it for a better life and for better returns in his investments there. Everyone is well aware of the state of affairs in India and if you have the means and you do not have a moral restriction of not leaving your country, why wouldn’t you leave it and settle somewhere abroad that offers you a better life?

I don’t really care about someone leaving their Indian citizenship, but what bothers me is his lying about it on public platforms. If you see his filmography, there is a string of ‘nationalist’ films, such as Special 26, Baby, Toilet, Padman, etc. He is cashing in on the nationalist wave in the country and very conveniently investing it in India and elsewhere.

He said that he possesses a ‘dual citizenship’. Lie. There is no notion of dual citizenship in India.

So while his taking up Canadian citizenship is a personal choice and I don’t really care about that, his cashing in on Indian sentiments and investing it elsewhere bothers me, but again, at the end of the day, Akshay is a businessman and he has to do the most profitable thing and when it comes to business, the love for your nation is a farcical notion.

Sanket Dialani has written a nice answer and do read that as well.

Not officially confirmed but wikipedia says his nationality is Canadaian and taken Canadian citizenship claiming dual citizenship.

Indian Constitution which does not permit dual citizenship , he may likely an overseas citizen of India .

Article 9 of Constitution of India quotes

Persons voluntarily acquiring citizenship of a foreign state not to be citizens of India .

Since I am not a fan of of him or even Bollywood , I did not dig much into the issue but when I come across some articles there are rumours about his interest in booming Canadaian real estate . Akshay Kumar in 2011 has purchased an entire hill in Canada . He even served as brand ambassador of Canadian tourism. In an interview to a question on his citizenship , he replied that is a honorary and not that what you think of .

The question about his Canadian citizenship arised when he was detained in one of London’s airport because of having Canada passport in 2016 .

I dunno why we people get offended soo easily. Akshay Kumar…whether he has Indian citizenship or not is his own matter of concern or his family..But no…everyone is getting dragged into it.We Indians want to treat everyone as our property…..We watch your movies soo you belong to us….and stay here only.

There is no harm if a person earns money….pays all his taxes ….and then even if he wants to invest it abroad or anywhere…no one should have a problem with that. Every person has a chance to live a better life and offer the same to his family and children and can take decisions what he feels are correct…. Soo many Indians, leave their villages or homelands to work in big cities and Soo many Indians get a chance of going abroad and they never return to India. Does that mean they don't love their homeland?

No one has the Right to question one's Patriotism.

Also…If earning and investing money is wrong…..soo many businessmen fall into that line.

Even you being hardcore Indian wear foreign brand clothes and accessories…do you become anti national with that.

The world is becoming global…and we must grow up to understand that.

Simple question to you or anyone else with negative thoughts on this… Won't you take an opportunity to live in Canada, US, Europe or Australia given a chance?? He is not the first and certainly not the last Indian to do so.

If not all but most of the Indians aspire to go and work & live in these countries(especially IT professionals like me). And once people experience how life is in these countries, people start thinking about settling down because without a single iota of doubt, life is better over here. I myself have spent a lot of time in India and some time in Europe, Australia and now staying in Canada. From my experience I can say that there is huge cultural difference that makes life more peaceful n better here. Also it doesn't mean that people can't have bad experiences here but chances will be less.

Few common reasons why people move to these countries irrespective of their nationality.

  1. Better income compared to home country.
  2. Better opportunities and less competition. By reaching to these countries, people have already overcome most of the competition.
  3. Better quality of life and living standards. No work is small in these countries and minimum wage concept makes sure that some income equality is maintained.
  4. Peace

Why does someone take up any citizenship?

Obviously there are some benefits especially powerful passport and good standard of living etc

In Akshay Kumar's case he voluntarily gave up Indian citizenship for Canadian one, but still earns from India everything fine till now.

The question people raise is about his patriotism towards India. I think he is not even eligible to be an Indian patriot as he has officially left India and no more an Indian citizen. But still he is considered a super patriot by a large number of people who also defend this move.

Now let me give you a contrasting example of another Indian actor Aamir Khan who just talked about leaving the country and was classified as an anti national and what not.

God knows what would have happened if he had accepted Canadian or any other citizenship like Akshay Kumar.

From when does patriotism mean that you have to be a citizen of a country? Akshay doesn't need to prove to anyone how much he loves his country or not and giving up his citizenship doesn't make him less Indian than any other Indian here. Nobody has really earned Indian citizenship to even question his patriotism.

Of course, it is a personal choice and I am no one to criticize that decision of Akshay Kumar. The only problem I have is that he lies upfront about it in his media interviews that he has a “dual citizenship”.

Wow this is shocking !So he puts money in Canada and contribute it’s development ? So much for a deshbhakthi..👏

Akshay doesn't need to prove to anyone how much he loves his country or not and giving up his citizenship doesn't make him less Indian than any other Indian here. Nobody has really earned Indian citizenship to even question his patriotism.

someone who GAVE UP his IDENTITY that too WITHOUT ANY REAL NEED (like a common man) can be ANYTHING but a deshbhakt.

WHY ? (few answers from google users at Quora)

Because he wanted to invest most of his movie earnings from Indian audience in some upcoming malls of Canada(and not India), and there are high surcharges for foreigners to invest (~15–40%) in property in a lot of developed countries.

^ again , the one who gave up being an Indian/lost his national identity without any need, is anything but a deshbhakt, the nautanki one is doing in form of string of deshbhakt films after "that decision" tells a different story.

His life his moooony, like twisted-philosophies cannot possibly answer the question this thread is asking.
