Post Independence majority of theatre artists and actors from Lahore and Karachi came and settled in Mumbai to continue their work with them they bought the Punjabiyat hence majority of early bollywood was filled with Punjabi actors, producers n technichians as the money came mostly from them the content was also of their choice and also they bought in and supported their "pind" ke log. Mid era saw lots of migrants from bihar n UP who bought in content that appealed to them but still it remained mostly punjabi influenced coz of the early settlers who grew to become big names.

No, there are movies where story is set in Gujarat, or Haryana or Bihar or MP or Maharashtra or Himachal or Uttarakhand or UP or Rajasthan or Punjab, Goa, Kashmir.

BW caters to North, Central and Western part- Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Goa.

By default, it has become so. It tends to cater to the Hindi belt. The characters and narratives are centered around North Indian places or Bombay. While some movies do have characters and cultures outside the Hindi belt, the overall representation is insignificant and often times caricaturish.

Due to the lack of representation in the mainstream movie industry, many regional industries have started and flourished. Many people outside the Hindi belt prefer regional film.

I don't fault Bollywood or anyone. This is just how the industry evolved. Just how Hollywood is seen as an "American" movie industry and isn't considered representative of all "English-speaking" nations. The British especially consider their local industry as separate.

But internationally, the barrier between industries is slowly fading. Filmmakers like Alfonso Cuaron, Ang Lee, Park Chan-Wook, are recognized irrespective of what language they make the film in. Chris Evans appeared in Snowpiercer which although in English is a Korean film.

The trend is breaking in India too. Initially, it started with Bollywood remaking regional films. But once people recognized the original industry they started appreciating them. Films like Sairat, Baahubali, and KGF started breaking the language barrier. People flocked to see these films irrespective of language. Every wedding party in India started blasting Zingat even if they didn't understand a word. Baahubali 2 and now Saaho are being made in multiple languages simultaneously further thinning the gap between industries.

If the film is good - language doesn't matter. So while the myriad of industries will not meld into one - I have hope that most Indians will find themselves represented in cinema and embrace stories from different parts.
