The Mumbai Press Club on Friday said it fully backs the decision of the Entertainment Journalists Guild to boycott actor Kangana Ranaut for refusing to apologise for lashing out at a PTI reporter during a press conference.

Members of the Mumbai Press Club said in a statement that they strongly condemn Ranaut's language and behaviour towards the news media, particularly towards PTI journalist Justin Rao. On Sunday, Ranaut launched an attack on the reporter even before he could ask his question during a song launch event of her film JudgeMentall Hai Kya.

She accused the journalist of running a "smear campaign" against her and her last release Manikarnika. Instead of making amends, the release said, Rangoli Chandel, Ranaut's sister and manager, launched an "abusive" attack against news media on Twitter.

While JudgeMentall Hai Kya producer Ekta Kapoor apologised for the incident, Ranaut has refused to do so.

"The Entertainment Journalists' Guild, which first raised the issue, has pointed out that this is not the first time Ms Ranaut and her manager-sister have insulted and abused journalists. It has become part of their unprofessional conduct," the release said.

"The Mumbai Press Club stands fully behind the Guild to demand Ms Ranaut tender an apology to Justin Rao and the other journalists for her behaviour. We also fully support their call for a complete boycott of her events," it said.

The Mumbai Press Club said it had examined the footage of the press conference. While the reporter was "fully composed", Ranaut was abusive and insulting even though as a journalist he was fully within his rights to criticize her work. "A job of a journalist is to provide independent assessment of entertainment content; and critical commentary cannot be reason enough to lose control, turn against the media and hurl expletives," the release said, adding that if necessary members of the club will take up the matter with "various associations of filmmakers."

"Since this has been a serial problem, we will also examine the option of pressing criminal charges of abuse, defamation and intimidation against Kangana Ranaut; as well as seek civil compensation for preventing journalists from carrying on their professional work," the release said.

The journalist denied the allegations and the actor's claim that he personally messaged her and spent three hours in her vanity van. He said he met the actor briefly for an interview and there were no personal messages. On Thursday, Ranaut posted a video saying that she would not apologize.

This guild seems to be going rogue. Here are some of their latest tweets and it wouldn't be wrong to sue for defamation and intimidation since it looks like the sole purpose is going after Kangana. Why are these entertainment journalists publishing on Hindi news portals? Also aren't they supposed to be boycotting her?

Let the entire media boycott her, she won't apologize, she had every right to call out the justin rao, he was trolling her for one year twisting all her social causes as some trivial joke . Thats not acceptable and he lied denying he ever ran a smear campaign when he has been for a year.

This guild was formed for the sole purpose of ganging up and its members have all one agenda.

Journalists have been questioned and obviously they will have to safeguard their interests .

On one hand she defends her sister's right to harass and abuse everyone on her twitter handle as her freedom of speech on the other hand when a journalist's does so on his own personal twitter account (without any abuse or harassment but simply showcasing her double standards and trolling her) that amounts to defamation and with criminal intention. Reporters have the right to live their lives. They have the right to participate on social media. They have the right to free speech. They even have the right to opinions.

This is from his personal FB page. Even his twitter has “views personal” in the bio. Read the Kangana interview article he published - there is nothing bad in it. Even the video where he asked about Manikarnika releasing in Pakistan is just that - absolutely no commentary. And how can someone who posted the things Rantgoli/Kangoli has on twitter or said the things Kangana has said on national TV claim this post and similar are a “smear campaign”? And even if making fun of Kangana’s 3 year campaign to convince the public her imaginary love affair was real could be considered a “smear” , how is that remotely anti-national? Her excuses are ridiculous and make absolutely no sense.

she can be a good actress and all of that but how can anyone respect her for the way she bullies and harasses people.. even in the video she released, she is so full of herself. the language is beyond disgusting. I haven't seen a lady more trashy than her. and people here defend her. Put yourself into the shoes of those people being harassed and you will know!
