Should teenagers swear allegiance to the Queen?
School leavers in the UK would swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen under new government plans. Should pupils take part in special citizenship ceremonies?
The new proposals are part of a review of citizenship by the former attorney general Lord Goldsmith at the request of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
New immigrants to the UK already take part in citizenship ceremonies. It is hoped that they would give young people a better idea of what it means to be British.
The proposals suggest holding citizenship ceremonies in schools when pupils are about to move on to further education or employment. John Dunford from the Association of School and College leaders said it was "a half-baked idea".
Would citizenship ceremonies improve young people's idea of what it means to be British? Would you like to take part in a citizenship ceremony? Do you pledge allegiance in your country? 😛
