I hope Geets nervousness isnt giving him cold feet. Wonder what was said in the rest of the card. They probably need a moment to speak.

Chapter 16

Beautiful and so Awesome

When Geet woke up she had first thought that it could have been her dream

that Maan was there but seeing the flowers and note she was now sure that her

fiancé arrived safely and had spend some time with her

while Geet's mom informs her about Maan and at the same time she realizes that

Maan had already been there to see Geet

I actually liked the fact that Geet's mom did not get angry instead she was more pleased

with the fact that both Maan and Geet are getting to know each other and like each other

Geet's engagement and Maan seems unsettled that Geet has not even glanced his way

I suppose exchanging the rings it would be natural that Geet has trembling fingers

now just waiting to see how Maan puts the ring in Geet's finger and will he gain her attention

finally

Geet’s mother is a sharp lady. Maan is restlessly waiting for Geet. Was there something that Geet missed while reading Maan’s note.

Concert Night

Oh how I wish I had let mama persuade me to cancel the show tonight. How I wish I hadn’t heeded to papaji’s ‘No matter what phase of life you are in, never lose your identity’ lecture;’ Geet worried as she waited for her turn backstage.

What would I have lost anyway, she thought; but the opportunity to perform in front of my own townspeople for the very first time, make my family proud and thereby fulfill a lifelong dream?... If only the opportunity hadn't come at a worse time---right before my wedding, with my future mother-in-law and husband watching every move I make from front row seats!

Venturing to sneak a cautious peek from behind the curtain, she caught sight of Maan’s elegant head as he bent down to listen attentively to something her mother was saying. Then she saw the flash of his smile followed by the sound of his distinct laugh. He was having fun at her expense. Damn him!

Right then he looked up and caught her eye making her step back in a hurry. Damn him! Damn him! Damn him!

Geet made an attempt to invoke some calm by trying to recall the music she was supposed to play, but could only conjure up his mocking smile. Gawd, if only I could just kill him! She fumed.

A hard shove on the back brought her tumbling ungracefully back to her senses. It was Annie.

“Have you fallen asleep? They are calling your name. Go and give the best performance of your life or your poor Maan will be disappointed. He’s been waiting all day to see his precious Geet on stage!” She giggled.

Geet glared furiously at her friend before proceeding to where her sitar lay in the center of the massive stage, picking her way carefully over the countless wires and paraphernalia that dotted the floor as the announcer droned out the history of her life in glorious terms, making her tiniest achievements appear as if they were each worthy of a national award. And if all that wasn’t embarrassment enough he chose to make matters worse by making public the news of her engagement, in addition telling all that her fiancé was part of the audience. It was a miracle she made it to her destination with her dignity intact.

A jarring note rang out as her fingers slipped over a fret.

Trying to appear as casual as she could, Geet wiped her sweat slick palms on her silk dupatta. She then glanced at Pandit Shivshankar, her tabla accompanist, who gave a nod of reassurance.

She smiled vaguely at the distant exit sign, then resolutely turned her mind back to her instrument. As the attention of an over three hundred strong crowd focused on her, she could think of only one in particular, the one who was probably listening keenly, eager to ferret out the minutest of mistakes. Of course, he would, it is in his character, Mr. Perfectionist! He wouldn’t spare even his own fiancée!

But Geet had made up her mind. She was going to go through with the program, even if it was riddled with errors, even if the rendering turned out to be the worst performance of her life, she was determined to accomplish the task.

And she did.

How she wasn’t sure. Perhaps by God’s grace or the rush of adrenalin in her veins, the ordeal was finally over. She made it through the forty odd minute recital without major mishap.

The deafening applause that greeted her at the end of the final jugalbandi set to a blistering tempo was exhilarating to say the least and provided a perfect soother to her earlier anxieties. Even Pandit Shivshankar was effusive with his praise and that for her was a rare achievement.

No sooner did she step off the stage, Geet was assaulted by a torrent of humanity. Congratulations and accolades poured from all around. A confusion of bodies hugged her, pumped her hand and then posed for pictures with her. Introductions were made and promptly forgotten while she stood quietly with her beaming parents flanking her on either side. Even Mrs. Sharma looked suitably impressed as she came forward and bestowed a tender kiss on the forehead.

But Geet’s eyes couldn’t locate the person they were seeking. He was nowhere to be seen. She instructed her family to go ahead and waited impatiently for several minutes in the empty auditorium only to be disappointed.

***

Dispirited and crestfallen, Geet dragged herself toward the parking lot when she was suddenly snatched into the shadows. The miscreant turned out to be none other than her absconding fiancé.

“Maan!”

“Yes, it's me Geet.”

But the moment of relief was brief.

“Say what you have to say!” She demanded.

“Say what?” He looked bewildered.

“What you didn’t want to say in public, that you hated the way I played! C’mon, you can be frank, I can take it!”

He hesitated;”uhmm… I’m sorry Geet. But I didn’t hear a thing.”

“What?!..." She was shocked beyond measure. "Was I that bad? No wonder you’re embarrassed to be even seen with me! Let me go!” She tried to disengage herself from his grasp.

He clutched her even tighter, “No you are mistaken. Try to understand!”

“There is nothing left to understand!” She whimpered struggling harder.

“Geet, hear me out...Please!”

She gave up. He was too strong. “All right, but make it quick.”

He sighed, “Yes I’m guilty for not listening to the music, not because it was bad, not at all..., but because I couldn’t. My senses wouldn't cooperate for they were absorbed in something else entirely....You!"

“Me?” her irritation was replaced by puzzlement.

“Yes, you Geet. I found myself enthralled, paralyzed, stupefied, bedazzled, enamored, utterly incapacitated for no fault of mine!” He declared staring unwaveringly into her eyes. “And then I was overwhelmed by an irresistible need to take you in my arms and hold you there forever, just like I am right now.”

Her heart flooded with joy as he drew her closer and his voice dropped to a harsh whisper.

“I don’t recognize myself anymore. Look at what you’ve reduced me to---a helpless fool! But only you can rescue me and put me out of my misery Geet....”

“How?” She uttered softly afraid to wreck her daydream.

“By coming away with me...”

Just then Geet heard her mother call out her name. But he wouldn’t let her go.

She stared riveted at his impassioned face.

“Will you Geet?”

Then the very next instant he released her, his expression changing into one of anguish, “What am I saying? Of course you won’t! You can’t! I think I’m going crazy! Go home Geet. Sorry I bothered you.”

With immense reluctance she turned on her heels and slowly walked away--- I'm willing to go away with you anytime Maan. It’s just that I’m afraid to say so. She stopped and looked over her shoulder.

But he was gone.
