You mean the movie where Karishma takes Salman back after he openly commits infidelity. Shockingly enough this movie was considered to be promoting feminism in the 90s.

Of course that was wrong but first of all it was a comedy 😅😅 and secondly that was what happened in movies back then. The wife always forgave her husband no matter what. Judging from the present time, of course we can say that she should've divorced him but people accepted that ending wholeheartedly back then otherwise the movie wouldn't have been so successful.

Actually even in present times there are movies which promotes feminism like this and wives forgive their husbands. Even in real life, modern, independant and successful women like Beyonce, Khloe Kardashian, etc. have forgiven their husbands after they openly committed adultery.

And here we're talking about 90s Indian cinema and culture when the pati parmeshwar was everything. It was always the wife's duty to guide her husband back to the right path no matter what wrong he did. So you should basically blame the Indian mentality back then which is still prevalent in some places.

First of all, a movie being comedy does not give permission to condone a regressive practice. Films in the 90s, on the whole, did that. There were some films about a woman falling in love with her rapist but that is precisely why we say they have not aged well. Even in her comedies with Govinda, Karishma played female characters that were meant to suggest that no means yes. She still falls in love with Govinda in Haseena Maan Jayegi after he fools her into exposing in front of him by pretending to be blind. In real life that would be an incidence of sexual harassment. Comedy doesn't mean nothing should be taken seriously. There was a reason many critics labeled Govinda movies as "leave your brain at home comedies."

The forgiveness part can be overlooked. But in reality once a cheater always a cheater look at Ranbir or KSG. But his character really does not even show much remorse. One minute worth of crying and she takes him back? That was regressive. Pati pareshwar was a thing in 90s cinema that is precisely why people say those films have not aged well.

I think you're getting way too serious 😅 That is why I've already said that you should blame the Indian mentality and culture back then not the movies. The movies only reflect what is prevalent in the society and all this was totally acceptable back then. There have been worse things shown in 90s movies which were not even comedies.

Another thing if you don't like brainless comedy movies then that's fine but you can't blame/question others for liking them. If that users likes Biwi No. 1 then it's their choice. You can just choose to ignore these movies.

P.S. There were successful/critically acclaimed films about women leaving/divorcing cheating husbands even in the 90s or even before that: Arth/Astitva

Yes but 5 among 1000s doesn't really change anything. Also, like I said you can't question/blame others for liking movies like Biwi No. 1, it's their choice and you can just choose to ignore them. Please don't spread negativity in my thread if you don't like Salman-Karishma and their movies.

I shall blame both the movies in the culture. It not always the movies being representative of a culture. More than often it is the other way around. Pop culture, movies, and entertainment influence the culture that follows. I Shabana Azmi, and a very successful director of school culture at an education system I worked with agree on that. So both deserve to be blamed vice versa.

And the member who said he liked Biwi No. 1 was quoting another member who felt that most Salman Karishma movies have aged badly. Why can't that member just let the other member have their opinion?

Lol ! And how can you be so sure of those statistics? You names one film. I named two. But as I said everyone is entitled to an opinion and there is not a need to come to a consensus. Peace!
