Part Fifteen A
Jai Walia slammed the car door behind him and marched past the veranda into the house. The distinct voice of his fiance laughing musically rang unpleasantly in his ears and that's exactly how he caught her with her wide arms wrapped around some person and her head bent low, as she leaned onto the guy still giggling. He failed to understand what he had seen in this girl ten years back. No doubt Roshni was stunning to look at, but all the beauty ended there. Was he that bad in his judgment that he hadn't seen her through her fakeness ages ago?
"What the hell is the meaning of this?" he growled, as he pulled her wrist angrily and threw the other guy a cold look to which he instantly retreated back and mumbled some words tartly before conveniently disappearing into the living room.
Her eyes first parted in confusion and then in surprise, as they looked at him and he was certain without a shadow of a doubt that it was all an act. She was going to pull up another stunt and give him another explanation, but he wouldn't buy it this time, since he'd just learnt several hours earlier, Roshni Chopra was a fraud, a liar and a world class actress.
"Jai…" she mumbled sweetly, as she looked at him wide eyed, "how sweet of you to drop by!" Wrapping her arms around his neck she edged closer towards him. She was too clingy was his first thought. He'd caught her with someone else, yet she would never express any fear at being caught, rather she would continue to behave normally, as if nothing were wrong and the guy would remain in the living room, while she tried to fool him, but not now. Not today. He certainly wouldn't be fooled tonight.
He brushed her hand away and stepped back, "Roshni…" He bit out in a restrained voice, "I want an explanation to this." He waved an envelope in front of her eyes and handed it to her wanting to kill her for claiming to be in love with him, yet continuing with her discreet affairs, but most importantly he wanted to kill her for playing with not only his emotions, but his family's as well. They had so many aspirations with his marriage next week, especially the whole house was filled with sounds of laughter, teasing every night. How was he supposed to inform them that there would be no marriage?
Though he was glad they hadn't met Roshni yet and he sighed wearily thinking at least that bit was better. He'd kept her as a surprise and she was supposed to be introduced tonight to all his friends and family. He'd kept their long affair a secret from his entire friends and family, of course now they'd been aware that he'd a girl in his life, but they had no idea of her whereabouts. Once in a while he did drop by a tiny tid bits about her, but that's all there was to the matter.
Wouldn't they be heartbroken once they became aware of his fiance's ugly reality? Especially, his massi she always remained so insistent to see him married, but would he marry anyone now, would he dare to fall in love with another girl now after Roshni?
"Oh…" Roshni took a deep breath and he was satisfied to see that no acting came into account, as all the color on her face drained out and she stared at the paper looking completely pale, "I…" And then to his sudden surprise she began crying, as she clutched his jacket tightly, "I…I didn't know how to relate this to you"
"Roshni." With great patience he extracted her hands off his back, "You could have informed me about your first marriage any day and any time, Roshni. Please don't give me the excuse of time."
"You don't understand, Jai" she said clutching his hand, "You would have left me the minute you found out I was married."
"Can you blame me for that, Roshni?" he asked her calmly arms folded, "I would have still forgiven you for it, had you come to me in the first place, but now…"
"Now, what?" she stared at him wide eyed fear clearly evident in her coffee brown eyes.
"It's too late." He placed the papers calmly in her hands, "The marriage is off, Roshni."
"W-hat?" she stammered, "But what about your family? How are you going to relate this to them?". So, she was well aware of his weakness.
He pressed his eyes shut then opened them steadily, "I'll deal with that, Roshni." With those words he turned on his heels, "Just do me a huge favor – stay away from me and my family."
By the time he'd marched out he was glad she hadn't attempted to stop him and it was easier that way. He didn't want to create a scene. Seating behind the wheels he stared out into the darkness slowly covering his face in his hands. That had been painful. More painful than he could ever admit.
Gauri Chatterjee pressed the lock of hair falling on her eyes away, as she stepped down the auto rickshaw drenched in sweat and exhausted from head to toe. She was very certain the minute she tumbled down on the bed she would be asleep for twenty four hours straight. Pulling her purse down in her lap, out of the corner of her eye she caught Shiv stepping out beside her stretching his arms.
"I told you." She pointed out with an amused grin, "Auto rickshaws are fun."
He gave her a grim smile in return. But she could tell he'd enjoyed the ride.
"Gauri…" His eyes stilled and she turned around to see what he was looking at, "What is this? I'm heartbroken." Hands on his heart, "You never informed me you were getting married. This is terrible. What's going to happen to me?"
If she hadn't known she could have sworn she would have really believed in his words. Rolling her eyes she smacked his arm, "Right." She mumbled something about an Oscar under her breath, "Want to come -"
But he was already in front of her fishing his hands in his pockets he made his way up the steps.
"Where do you think you are going?" She paid the driver, "Keep the change." She told him, "Kapoor, what the hell are you doing?"
"Chatterjee, stop yelling!" he turned around irritated, "Never had the impression you were blind. Why, I am entering your house."
She narrowed her eyes, hands on her hips, "But I don't recall inviting you."
The lazy grin was back, "I invited myself."
She rolled her eyes. Trust him to come up with something like that.
"Don't deny it, sweetheart, you were about to invite me yourself."
"Nothing but of politeness and mere formality."
"Well too bad." He said dryly stepping into the house, as she mumbled curses behind him.
Jai Walia stood in the darkness with his arms folded watching the bees buzz wildly into the night. But it wasn't the bees that occupied his mind tonight. It was the fact that a week from now would be his wedding. The preparations were on in full swing. He'd plenty of instances tonight to relate that the wedding was off, but he couldn't, it broke his heart every time he saw his family's enthusiasm and happiness. He couldn't bear to wipe the smiles off their face. Especially Massi's. She was so wildly excited about the wedding looking into the decorations, the celebrations – she looked into everything and beamed proudly saying, "It's my son's wedding!"
He didn't find it in his heart to break the news to them. But he realized he had to at some point in time. Especially the other night Massi had been so insistent about meeting up with Roshni and he had firmly refused at first, but then finally he had been compelled to nod his head when she'd adamantly demanded to meet Roshni at tomorrow night's party. Tomorrow night for sure, he firmly decided, he would inform everything to them.
"Tu agayi beta…" Gauri's chachi cupped her cheek, "Dekh tere liye humne kya kiya hain…"
"Keya?" Gauri frowned staring around the room. Yes. It was obvious chachi would sweetly pinpoint and make her aware of all the things she did for her. She was certain this time also chachi would brag about it.
"Teri Shaadi."
"What?" She pushed aside the decorations, "To whom?"
"To Shashank, of course." Her chachi replied with a smile, "Who did you think?"
Gauri stared incredibly at her chachi.
"Now, don't just stand here. Chal." saying so her chachi all but nearly pulled her inside the house, "Take this dress and change."
"What?"
"yes, change into it. tum nahin janti humne kitne papad bela hain. Yeh shaadi ke liye." Chachi making her aware again of all the 'things' she had done for them, "ab jaldi se pehen le yeh aur chal niche jaldi se chal. Shashank tera intezaar kar raha hain." Saying so she walked out of the room.
"Isn't it amazing you are getting married?" A voice asked her from the other end of the room, she turned around numbly still trying to decide whether this was a dream, "Congratulations, Gauri! I must admit your family is incredible. Without your permission they are getting you married to some creep." Shiv said dryly and then he walked out of the room leaving Gauri alone.
