Like such a relationship will require him to know about his whereabouts which even his family doesn’t know. So he may keep running away from his feelings and probably mishti May have to realize /confess whenever she does. Also, they haven’t showed any reason for Kunal getting married before Abir which may have its own backstory.

@bold red. More than thinking about losing his own freedom, he is scared of "abandonment". As much as he loves his mom, he loved his dad even more. In the flashback they showed, he was shown as a very happy child who was having fun being with his dad. His dad is shown to forcefully remove Abir's hand and leave from there. Abir had believed that his father would be there with him forever, yet he saw his father leave him in a few secondswithout even turning back. From that moment, he did not just lose his dad, but he also lost that emotional connect with his mom. He now shares a kind of formal or opposition filled relationship with her. This has cause him to feel that relationships are short lived and is not long term. And hence he cannot really rely on someone to be there with him "always". Hence he always tries to keep a safe distance with people so that he doesn't have to feel sad when they leave him.
