SCENE 10: The release of the supplementary exam results. Sameer comes to the principal's office to receive his results. He looks very nervous. There are a few other students also there to get their results. The principal hands out the results by calling the students' names. She gets to Sameer's result. She looks at it, looks at him, then back to the results. Then she hands it to him and shakes her head. Sameer takes it but he does not open it. He looks at it and starts to leave the principal's office

Principal: Sameer.

Sameer: Jhi Madam.

Principal: Result kolega nahin?

Sameer looking at the results: Ghar par kolunga, Mummy keh saat.

Principal: Hmm.

Sameer is in his car, he keeps looking at the results on the passenger seat. He eventually reaches home, his mum is waiting for him at the door. She looks at his face and gets worried.

Vishakha: Sameer result milla?

Sameer holds the result out to her.

Vishakha: Kolo!

Sameer: Aap koliye Mummy, please!

By this time the rest of the family as well as Munna and Pandit have joined them. Soumani has a smirk on his face.

Soumani: Dekh Vishakha tere beta mein himmat nahin hain uska results dekhne koh. Usko gabar hain keh number kam hain.

Sameer simply looks at him. Vishakha opens the envelope. Her face registers shock. All the others look at her:

Soumani: Kiya huwa? Zero aya. Mujhe pata tha, tera beta nikhama hain.

Vishakha hands the result to him. Poonam takes it from her before Soumani can react. Poonam looks at it and breaks into a huge smile and starts dancing. Mamiji stops her and takes the results from her. She looks at it and also smiles hugely. Mamaji looks at it and starts doing a hugely funny dance. Sameer, Munna and Pandit look at all this in wonder. Eventually...

Vishakha: Sameer, 95%!

Sameer: Kiya?

Vishakha hugs Sameer: Congratulations! Congratulations! I am so so sooo proud of you!!

Sameer's in a state of shock. Munna-Pandit take the result from Devang and look at it. They hug Sameer and dance around him, pick him up shoulder high. Devang and Mamaji join in and do a victory dance with Sameer shoulder high. Poonam, Mamaiji and Vishakha dance too.

Poonam: Ab party bant hain!

Vishakha: Zaroor.

Soumani is furious. He wants to see the result but Sameer is holding it well out of his reach. He storms off whilst the celebration continues.

SCENE 11: Sameer, Munna and Pandit are in his room. Sameer is looking at the results again and again.

Munna: Kiya huwa Bhai?

Pandit: Results par yakeen nahin hain?

Sameer: Yaar, yeh sapna toh nahin hain nah?

Munna and Pandit slap him on each cheek.

Sameer: Ooowww. Kyon maar the ho?

Munna: Laga?

Pandit: Toh sapna nahin hain.

Munna: Bhai hamara 95% number laya!!!!

Sameer: Yeh shart poora hogaya. Kal seh nayi exam shuru.

Pandit: Matlab?

Sameer shows them the letter from the College.

Munna: Toh tu hum seh alag class meh padega?

Sameer: Hmm.

Pandit: Aur us larkhi joh tere saat music room meh thi seh door rahega?

Sameer: Hmm.

Pandit: Principal koh kaisi gabar hain keh music room tere saat khon the?

Sameer: Principal neh kahan larkhi gud unne bataya. Toh Naina seh door rahunga. Woh maan bhi gayi.

Munna: Nahin! Matlab Naina seh door nahin!

Pandit: Haan, hum seh door!

Sameer: Kiya, tum log seh door kyon? Tum log tori mere saat music room meh the!

Flashback: Munna in Naina's clothes hugging Poonawala.

Munna and Pandit tell him what they had done. He listens in amazement.

Pandit: Haan yaar, Poonawala kha shakal dekhne liak tha.

Sameer: Toh tum dono neh yeh sab kiya mere liye?

Munna: Haan, bhai hain hamara.

Sameer: Ab hum kiya karenge college mein, akele akele.

Pandit: Yeh principal madam bhi bari chalak hain!

Munna: Kohi baat nahin. Ekh saal college keh baar milenge. Tere ekh saal waste toh nahin huwi.

SCENE 12: First day of the new college year. Sameer arrives at college alone. Munna and Pandit also arrive but they walk right past him without so much as looking at him.

Munna (under his breath): Good luck bhai.

Pandit (under his breath): Law Garden, paanch baje.

Preeti and Naina see Sameer going into another class. They are sad.

Preeti: Jijaji kah result aya?

Naina: Gabar nahin. Mujse door rehne kah shart maan liya ab uska chitti khi intizaar karne padega.

In class the Principal, JBR and Poonawala come. They inform the class of the conditions under which Sameer has been allowed to write the supplementary examination.

Kartik slaps the desk: Saala rusticate nahin huwa.

Sunaina: Aur mera plan fail!

Principal: Toh us larkhi joh Sameer keh saat music room meh thi, Sameer seh door rahigi. Agar saat dekhne meh ayi toh donoh koh rusticate karoongi. Samjhi?

She looks at Sunaina, Naina, Preeti, Kamya, Swati and Munna in turn. Each one nods.

SCENE 13: Red Rose Restaurant: Sunaina, Kartik, Priyank, and Mithali are there very upset.

Kartik: Priyank hum neh kiya kuch nahin kiya, phir bhi saala Sameer bach gaya. Uska kismet achi hain.

Sunaina: Mein Principal ma'm keh paas gayi yeh soch keh woh humare parents bulayegi. Izzat bachane keh liye papa seh kehti keh woh meri shaadi Sameer seh maang lehta. Sab bekaar hogaya!

Naina, Preeti, Kamya, Hema, Pandit and Munna come in and over hear their conversation. They sit down and place their order. Just then Sameer walks in. Everyone except Priyank and Kartik get up to leave. Sameer looks confused. Sunaina pushes past all of them angrily.

Pandit: Kiya karein, plan fail hogayi. Ghussa ayega nah!!

They all laugh. Outside Red Rose Munna stops abruptly.

Munna: Ekh baat bataye aap sab kyon ut kar chale ayi?

Naina: Tu ne suna principal neh kiya bhola. Joh larkhi Sameer keh saat music room meh thi usse door rehna nito rusticate karogi. Mein neh Sameer koh bholdiya keh hum woh shart kha palan kareinge.

Pandit: Teek hain. Naina kyon nikal ayi, samajh meh aya. Tum log kyon nikle?

They each start telling their own story of how they had told the principal it was them in the music room. They all laugh heartily.

Preeti: Ab hum sab khi waje jaan gayi, bata tum donoh Sameer koh akela kyon chor diya?

Pandit: Matlab?

Naina: Aap donoh yahan kyon hain?

Pandit: Oooh! Munna tu bata!

Munna: Nahin Pandit bata!

Naina: Bataaa!

Flashback as Pandit and Munna tell their story.

Preeti: Matlab, tu phir seh Munni bana!

They have a hearty laugh.

Naina suddenly looks worried.

Preeti: Kiya huwa?!

Naina: Yaar Sameer akela hogaya. Ab woh Kartik aur Priyank usko tang karega.

They all look worried and deep in thought.

Preeti: Pandit tu principal koh nahin bataya keh tu Sameer keh saat tha nah. Matlab, tu larkhi nahin bani nah?

Pandit: Haan, nahin, mein larkhi nahin bani, mein bahar tha.

Naina: Toh tu Sameer keh saat mil sakta.

Pandit: Haan, woh sahin hain.

Kamya: Hema bhi bahar thi.

Naina: Woh acha hain. To tu aur Pandit Sameer kah saat reh sakte hain.

They're all happy. So Hema and Pandit go back into the restaurant. Kartik and Priyank are trying to bait Sameer. He just ignores them.

Sameer: Kiya huwa? Sab kyon chale gayi?

Pandit: Yahan nahin. Chal.

They go out and in a quiet place tell him what had happened. They all have a good laugh. Then there's an announcement over the intercom system.

"All students are required to congregate in the auditotium for assembly immediately.

They all make their way to the auditorium. Once everyone is seated the principal goes onto the stage.

Principal: Students, Welcome. Old students welcome back. New students welcome to VJN. This assembly has been called on short notice as Mr Padayachee from the Department of Education has an announcement to make. So let's welcome Mr Padayachee.

Mr Padayachee: Good Afternnon students. The purpose of my visit today is to announce the final results. These final results take into account the performance of students during the final examinations and include those who had to write supplementary examinations. I am very pleased to announce the results as follows. As I call out your name please come to the stage.

He calls out a number of names for various courses and years. Different students come up.

Mr Padayachee: And now for the second year BCOM degree in third place we have Punit Singh. In second place, Naina Agarwal.

Naina looks shocked. Preeti and the rest of the gang says Kiya?

Mr Padayachee: Silence please. Ms Agarwal please come to the stage.

Naina gets up and quickly walks to the stage wondering if she came second who came first.

Mr Padayachee: And in first place we have with 95%... Sameer Maheshwari.

Munna Pandit erupt into a dance of ecstacy. Kamya and Hema are happy. Preeti is happy but looks at Naina worriedly. Naina is smiling with tears in her eyes. Sameer is sitting stunned in disbelief.

Mr Padayachee: Sameer Maheshwari please stage par ayiye.

Munna and Pandit find him and escort him to the stage. He looks in a daze. When he gets to the stage he sees Naina and then looks at the principal. He goes to the principal.

Sameer: Madam mein stage par nahin jha sakta.

Principal: Kyon?

Sameer: Naina hain. Aap koh shart yaad hain.

Principal: Woh sab choro, ghushi kah mauka hain. Tu jha.

Principal takes him personally forward.

How will Naina handle this loss to Sameer? Will it spur a healhy competition between them and thus bring out their true potential? Will this achievement awaken in Sameer the will to fulfil his true potential? Who knows?

Yehin toh pyaar ka nayi intihaan hain. Dekhte hain age age kiya hota hain. Mujhe gud pata nahin hain keh mere ungliyaan kiya likenge.

SCENE 14: On stage, Mr Padayachee is waiting for Sameer to take his place. The principal leads Sameer to Padayachee. Sameer is too scared to look at Naina.

Mr Padayachee: Congratulations young man. Well done.

Sameer: Ttthank you, Sssir.

Mr Padayachee: One further announcement, Mr Maheshwari scored 95%. This is the highest score in all of Gujurat. Not only that, it is also the highest score in all of India. No student has ever scored higher than 90%. Well done, Mr Maheshwari, well done.

The college erupts in ecstacy. Sameer is standing next to Naina. He wants to look at her but is scared. He thinks: Naina koh bura laga hoga woh topper nahin hain is saal. Usne meri help kiya aur meh usse age kaisa aya?

Naina sneaks her hand into his and holds it tightly. He looks at her in shock. His eyes open as wide as saucers. She is smiling from ear to ear and tears are rolling down her face.

Naina whispers: Sameer tu neh principal kah shard jeet gaya.

Sameer whispers: Tumhara pyaar neh mujhe jeetaya, Naina.

They look at Munna, Pandit, Preeti, Kamya, Hema, Swati and Sunaina dancing in the aisle. Only Priyank and Kartik are slumped in their chairs in disappointment.

Naina whispers: Woh pagalon khi tara naachte hain.

Sameer whispers: Aur woh pagal doston khi saat neh humme jeetaya.

The principal takes the mike.

Principal: Okay settle down everyone. Please take your seats. Please sit down. Thank you.

Mr Padayachee: Madam Principal, well done to VJN College on its performance and may it keep delivering such talented students.

Principal: Thank you, Mr Padayachee Sir. We will certainly try. Well done to all our students. Please retrun to class.

Naina and Sameer are still standing hand in hand. The Principal goes to them, looks at them from top to bottom. Her eyes fall on their hands. They quickly let go.

Principal: Haan, Well done Sameer and Naina. Aisa hi VJN kha naam uncha rakna, Huh?

Naina: Yes Ma'm.

Sameer: Yyyes Ma'm.

Principal turns to leave. As she reaches the end of the stage she turns around and looks at them again.

Principal: Conditions yaad hain nah?

Sameer: Yes Ma'm.

Principal: Toh kyon karha hain Naina keh saat? Rusticate kar doon? (She laughs and leaves.)

Sameer: Naina tujhe bura nahin laga keh tu second ayi?

Naina: Nahin Sameer, tu jeeta, usme meri ghushi hain.

SCENE 15: Sameer's home. He and Vishakha are sitting in the garden outside and he is explaining everything to her about what transpired at the college. They are laughing and look very happy together.

Vishakha: Tu ghush naseeb hain keh tujhe itna ache dost mille.

Sameer: Haan. Aur achi ma bhi.

Vishakha: Acha?

Sameer: Mujhe yeh bhi maloom hain keh aap neh principal ma'm seh ghuzaarish khi thi keh woh mujhe "sample tree exam dehne do.

Vishakha: Sample tree exam?

Sameer: Woh Munna kehta hain.

Vishakha: Tujhe kaisa pata?

Sameer: Are Mummy, woh aisa hi baat karta hain.

Vishakha: Nahin, tujhe kaisa pata chala keh mein principal seh baat khi?

Sameer flashback: After results announcement assembly Sameer is on his way to class he meets JBR.

JBR: Congratulations Sameer.

Sameer: Thank you JBR.

JBR: Thank you teri ma seh kehna.

Sameer: Matlab?

JBR: Agar teri ma yahan principal seh ghuzaarish nahin karti aur paao nahin parti, tera ekh saal waste ho jaahta.

Sameer: Mummy ayi thi?

JBR: Naseebdar hain keh teri ma ab tak tere saat hain!

Present:

Sameer: Mere sources hain.

Vishakha: Sources?

Sameer: Haan. Aur nahin bataaonga. Mummy yeh sab chor. Aaj raat koh mere dosto keh liye yahan party rakhni hain. Teek hoga nah?

Vishakha: Good idea. Tu tere dosto koh inform kar, hmm.

Sameer gets up to go and phone.

Vishakha: Aur Sameer...

Sameer: Jhi Mummy?

Vishakha: Naina koh bhi bulathe hain.

Sameer smiles from ear to ear.

SCENE 16: Sameer's house is decorated for the party. The family are all very happy and awaiting the arrival of the friends. It's a small affair with just Sameer's family and his frineds. Munna and Pandit arrive first. Kamya and Hema arrive, thereafter. Then Sunaina arrives.

Munna: Sunaina yahan kiya karti?

Pandit: Haan, Sameer neh kahan dosto keh liye party hain. Yeh dost kab banhi?

Sameer: Mein neh bulaya isse.

Munna and Pandit: Kyon?

Sameer: Baad mein maloom padega.

Sameer goes forward to receive Sunaina.

Sameer: Hi

Sunaina: Hi

Sameer: Thank you for coming, Sunaina.

Sunaina: Tu neh bulaya aur mein nah aaon?

Sameer: Please enjoy.

Swati comes in.

Munna: Sameer neh isse bhi bulaya? Kyon? Hadh hogay.

Sameer: Munna aisa mat kar yaar. Dost hain hummare.

Munna: Thi.

Sameer: Nahin! Hain! Baad mein samjhaoonga.

Sameer goes to receive Swati.

Sameer: Hello Swati. Acha huwa tu ayi.

Swati: Hello Sameer.

They stand awkwardly not knowing what to say.

Swati: Naina aur Preeti ayi hain?

Sameer: Abhi tak nahin aye hain.

Swati: Ayenge?

Sameer: Hmm. Mummy neh Tauji seh permission liya.

Swati: Acha hain.

Sameer: Chal.

He starts walking towards Munna and Pandit.

Swati: Sameer, wahan nahin.

Sameer: Kyon?

Swati: Munna koh acha nahin lagega. Mein udhar bhetungi.

She goes and sits by herself.

Munna watches her and fumes.

Sameer: Yaar, Munna mujse ekh vade karega?
Munna: Haan, kiya?

Sameer: Vada kar keh tu aaj Swati seh badtameezi nahin karega>

Munna: Mein badta...

Pandit taking both Munna's hands and placing one on Sameer's head and the other on his own head: Vada kar.

Munna: Teek hain, usse baat nahin karunga.

Pandit: Nahin woh vada nahin chahte.

Munna: Teek hain vada karta hoon keh main us Swati seh badtameezi nahin karunga.

Pandit: Yaar babhi aur tera saali ab tak nahin ayi hain?

Sameer: Ate honge. Tauji seh Mummy neh permission liya hain.

Munna: Agay hain.

All three go towards them. Greetings are exchanged and they sit down. The rest of the family comes out and there's merriment. Then Sameer gets up to make a speech.

Sameer: Yaaron aur dosto, mujhe aap sab seh kuch kehna hain. Mujhe gabar hain keh meh sab koh bohut satata hoon. Sab koh bohut dookhi karta hoon. Aur is saal toh hadh paar kiya mein neh. (He walks up Vishakha, puts his arms around her.) Is liye meh pehle Mummy seh maafi maangta hoon. Bohut dukh diya, bohut badtameezi khi hain. Sorry Mummy. Mein ye vada toh nahin kar sakta keh meh age tumme dukh nahin doonga, yeh ummeed mujse nah rakhe. Lekin khoshish toh zaroor karunga keh aap koh ghush rakne keh liye.

Vishakha has tears in her eyes as she listens to him. She thinks: Eh Guda, Sameer khi raasta kaaton seh bacha rakna please.

He walks over to Soumani, stands in front of him and says: Soumaniji sahib. Sorry aap koh Papa nahin bula sakta. Har badtameezi keh liye mujhe maaf kijiye, hosakeh toh. Koshish karunga keh age mein aap seh nah takraoon.

He walks to Mamaji and Mamiji, puts his arms around them and says: Mamaji, Mamiji mere saat rehne keh liye aur mere nagrein koh sehne keh liye shukria. Aap seh parivaar keh saat rehne keh ehsaas huwa. He includes Devan and Poonam in the embrace. Ekh bhai aur Bhabhi kah pyaar milla. Mujhe bohut acha laga. Bhabhi aap kah haat kah kahna lajawaab hain. Bohut satata hoon aap koh Bhabhi. Age bhi karunga. (Laughter all round.) Haan karunga. Kyon keh jab chota Randeep ayega mujhe kitna satayega woh?

He walks to Munna and Pandit: In dohno kha kiya kahoon? Bhayon hain mera. In keh binha meh adhoora hoon, aur agar mein mushkilon meh parta, waje ye dohno hain. (Munna and Pandit jump out of his arms in mock disgust.) Sahin keh rahan hoon. In keh baat sun kar karta hoon yeh sab harkatein. Nahin, sach kahoon agar ye nahin hote toh gabar nahin mera kiya haal hota. In keh binha... soch bhi nahin sakta. (Sameer whispers in Pandit's ears and Pandit starts to sing "Chal mere bhai as he waltzes off with Munna.)

Sameer: Ab meh chahunga keh Kamya, Hema, Swati, Sunaina, Preeti aur Naina yanhan aaon.

They frown as they come forward. He arranges them to sit next to one another in a straight line. He brings out an aarti tray. He puts a tikka on each one. Feeds each one laddoo and throws petals on them. Everyone looks on quite bemused.

Sameer: Aaon Munni, aaon.

They all turn to see Munna dressed as Munni in Naina's clothes. Pandit leads him to the seat vacated by Naina. She's now standing next to Sameer on his right. Coincidentally Vishakha is on Sameer's left.

Munna: Yaar yeh kiya kar rahaan hain tu.

Sameer: Are Munni. Bohut pyaari lakti hain. Yeh cheh (6) behna mera rakshak bhaiyon hain. In sab neh mujhe music room meh gale lagaye. Aisa aap log neh principal koh kahan nah. Ab mujhe gale lagao aur jhoot koh sach meh badaldijiye.

Flashback to them each pretending to have been the girl with Sameer in the music room.

Each girls jumps up saying Kiya?

Hema: Hum tujhe gale nahin laga sakte hain. Aur mein neh aisa nahin kahan.

Kamya: Mein tujhe hug nahin karoongi.

Swati stands there shaking her head. She looks at Munna/Munni: Sorry Sameer, lekin mein tujhe gale nahin lagaaongi.

Munna opens his mouth to say something and shuts it without saying anything.

Sunaina has that frown with her nose pulled look: No!

Preeti: Jijaji nahin!!!

Munna in his Munni voice: Mujhe kohi dikhat nahin, agar Bhabhiji bura nahin maane toh.

He goes to hug Sameer. Sameer jumps back laughing. Everyone is having a good laugh.

Sameer: Is liye meh aap sab koh rakhi bandh tah hoon. Bhet jaao.

He ties what looks like a rakhi on each of them. They look at it and lift their hands. It feels heavy.

Hema: Yeh rakhi kitti bhari hain?

Kamya: Haan yaar.

Preeti fidgets with the rakhi and sees a bracelet.

Swati sees this: Rakhi nahin hain...

Sunaina: Bracelet hain.

Preeti: Shukr hain, jijaji neh humme rakhi nahin bandha!

They all have a good laugh.

Munna in his Munni voice: Bohut achi bracelet hain, thank you Sameer.

Sameer: Aap sab neh hummare liye, yani mere aur Naina keh liye bohut kuch kiya. Zindagi bhar aap log khi abharan honge hum. Yeh karz kabhi nahin chukka sakenge hum.

Sameer looks at Pandit: Pandit, Munna kahan hain?

Munna in Munni voice: Mein yahan hoon.

Sameer: Munni, Munna kahan hain.

Munni runs off and returns as Munna. He has all Naina's clothes in his hands.

Bhabhi: Lo aap khi amanat, Bhabhiji. Aaj keh baad Munni mar kahi.

Naina: Tu isse rakh mujhe wapas nahin chahiye.

Pandit fake crying: Nahin, Munni ab nahin mar sakti hain. Uski shaadi abhi bhakhi hain.

Laughter all round.

Sameer hugs them both and hands them watches exactly like the one he wears. They put their hands together: Hum saat saat hain!

Vishakha: Ab mein kuch kahoon?

Sameer makes a gesture for her to continue.

Vishakha: Mere bete neh sab koh thank bhola lekin ekh insaan koh bhool hi gaya.

Sameer gestures: Mein?

Vishakha: Haan Sameer. Yeh 95% joh tune haasil khi hain, teri meynat khi phal hain. Lekin is kaamyabhi ke liye kissi aur kah bohut bara haat hain. Hain nah?

Sameer nods shyly.

Vishakha: Toh. Sameer kah kaamyabi khi waja aap sab doston hain. Sameer bohut lucky hain keh usse aise doston mille. Uska ekh aur ghus naseebi hain keh Naina in doston meh seh ekh hain. Naina, agar tu neh Sameer khi help nahin khi hogi to shayad woh hamesha khi tara 40% ya 45% hi lata. Teri help keh liye bohut, bohut merbhani, beta. Hummari ghush naseebi hain keh tu hummari bahu banegi. (As she speaks Sameer slips a gift into her hand.) Ab shagun kha kangan tujhe dhe chuki toh yeh tofa tere liye. (She hands her the gift as they hug.) And finally, iss saal first aur second position Maheshwari kah hi hona, hmm. (She looks at both Sameer and Naina.)

Munna: Mausi, Naina kah gabar hain, woh to top ayegi. Sameer, tu Bhabhiji koh harayega?

Sameer: Haan, kyon nahin.

Naina: Bachoo, No chance.

Vishakha laughing: Please enjoy everybody.

The party continues.

Swati starts to greet people. She reaches Sameer and Naina: Sameer mujhe invite karne keh liye Thank you, mazaa ayi. Ab meh chalti hoon.

Sameer: Rukh jha, meh tum sab koh choraonga.

Swati: Nahin Sameer, papa mujhe lene aya hain.

Sameer: Tu ayi acha laga.

Swati: Goodbye Sameer.

Swati hugs Naina: Alvidah Naina.

Naina looks at her: Alvidah kyon?

Swati: Aisa hi.

Naina: Bye Swati.

Swati reaches Munna and Pandit as she leaves.

Pandit: Jha rahi ho? Hum (pointing to himself and Munna) tujhe ghar chordo?

Swati: Nahin, papa aye hain.

Pandit: Oh.

Swati: Bye.

Pandit: Bye Swati.

Munna: Bye Swati.

Swati: Alvidah Munna.

Swati leaves. The gang get together.

Naina: Swati khi vevaar ajeeb tha nah?

Preeti: Matlab?

Naina: Jab woh jha rahin thi usne Alvidah kahan, bye nahin.

Kamya: Haan humme bhi alvidah kahan.

Sameer: Alvidah, bye mein farakh tori hain.

Naina: Nahin, farakh hain.

Munna: Alvidah kehte jab hamesha keh liye jhate tab.

Pandit: Swati kahan jahegi? Woh kahin nahin jahegi. Aisa hi bhol diya hoga.

Both Munna and Naina are sceptical, but they let it go.

They start greeting to leave. Sameer is not happy but the girls all leave with the driver.

Munna: Kohi baat nahin Sameer. Ekh hi saal kha baat hain.

The end... until he digs a new hole for himself.
