Halloween is a celebration that falls down on 31st October. Originally from Celtic countries and USA, the celebration has continued to expand to others countries of the world.
Halloween comes from All hallows'eve, which means the eve of the day of all Saints. Mostly the celebration is for kids and for sweets sellers.
The story of Halloween takes us 3000 years back where the Celtic Year used to finish on 31st October instead of 31st December today. At this time, Halloween was considered as the Eve of the New Year, which was dedicated to the God of Death and to Samhain, the Prince of Darkness.
A legend relates that during that special night, Samhain was jailed by the God of Sun, so that the death souls could visit the living souls by giving them offerings in front of the doors and to calm the spirits.
This way of celebrating Halloween have slightly disappeared through the years. In fact, Halloween developped in a new way in such countries as France, Ireland, Scotland or Wales. Due to food restrictions at that time Irish people moved to USA where they brought their Halloween traditions there.
One of the main symbols of Halloween was originally the turnip, inspired by the legend of Jack-o'-lantern. Jack was condamned to walk forever in the darkness of the hell and paradise having with him only a turnip lighted with a brand. Pumpkin has taken the place of the turnip today.
Halloween is a celebration that brings fun yet spooky fear at the same time. Kids and even adults decorate the houses, disguise themselves as witches, ghosts, skeletons or vampires to ask for the famous "Trick or Treat" .
