~ The Crystals

Brett joins us and sits on the chair next to Andie. "Nice song, doll" He kisses her cheek like the bestowed puppy he is. And they wear matching expressions of saccharine, diabetes inducing love.

"Do you like it, Aditya ? It's one of my favs" she asks, taking her eyes away from her Romeo.Sick.

"I can grow to love it" he replies non-committedly. He grabs a fork and knife and sets them on his plate.

Each time I saw him

I couldn't wait to see him again

"You must be Aditya. Andie's classmate, right ?" Bhavana chirps, placing a large bowl of rice on the table. He smiles at my third roommate - Bhavana. Also, known as doormat. Cooking was her gift and weak willpower her bane. The girl couldn't stand up for herself and attracted the most troublesome of the lot. Biker, tattooed and general assholes were her type.

"I have heard a lot about you" she extends her hand.

"Oh great ! That saves me the trouble of doing the unnecessary small talk and introduce myself " he replies smoothly "I can get straight to the point now" He kisses her knuckles in an over exaggerated manner. Bhavana giggles.

I wanted to let him know

That he was more than a friend

Bhavana scurries back to fetch more food as Andie hands me the bowl of rice. I scowl at her "So, smiley face, how's your Arbitration Law class going ?"

I keep my attention on the rice. Trying not to spill any of the grains helps me stay calm "Well, let's just say that it's not easy and leave it at that"

Bhavana sets the food on the table and takes the chair on my right side."Sleeping with the TA can help, you know" Andie suggests innocently and winks.

"I agree. It can be helpful" Bhavana raises her hand like a girl scout.

I glare "Thank you very much. But, I am not a skank"

Andie hands me the next dish with a stack of tortillas on it. It takes all my willpower, not to drop the plate. The witch, she was doing it deliberately. Pretending like she didn't know that Aditya was the TA in question. I could forgive Bhavana because she wasn't aware of the situation but Andie...traitor.

I didn't know just what to do

So I whispered "I love you"

I hand Aditya the rice and his fingers brush up against mine. My heart does a flip as I try to pretend like I don't notice how warm they are or that just being next to him is making me crazy. I blink a few times and try to conjure images of Amay. But all it did was make me compare the two, and that was really stupid, really dangerous ground to be walking on. I shook my head, getting it out of the clouds. I have to harden myself to his charms as obviously he was an asshole deep down. He had to be. I mean what kind of a guy gets a girl so drunk that she thinks kissing the TA to make her ex-boyfriend jealous is a good idea ? Not the kind of guy I want to date, that's for sure.

Mr TA leans over and asks "Can you pass the hot sauce, please ?"

"Ew, hot sauce" says Brett "I like mild salsa"

"Mild is for quitters" Bhavana declares. Aditya's staring at me as he waits for me to comply with his request. I reach my arm like a shot and knock the bottle over in my haste.

"Dammit!" I say as the cap flies off and lands in Brett's plate.

"Sorry" I cringe and hand the bottle to Aditya.

He wraps his whole hand around it, trapping mine against the glass container. I turn quick and open my mouth to complain and his mouth is just two inches from mine "Nervous about something ?" he asks, flicking his eyebrows up once.

And he said that he loved me too

And then he kissed me

I yank my hand away "No. Should I be ?" I take a bite of beans, acting like I am not having a heart attack right at the dinner table. Andie, Bhavana and Brett are so busy arguing about which is better, mild or hot salsa that nobody notices I'm freaked out and messed with a true master player. Aditya is just plain dangerous. I seriously underestimated his skills.

"Maybe you should be. Depends" His leg brushes up against mine, and I both hate and love the fact that I chose to wear shorts today.

"Shut up" I whisper under my breath. I'm about to give him a heavy dose of reality when his hand goes under the table and touches my bare thigh.

"You've got great legs" he whispers. Before I could respond appropriately by blowing his head off. He turns towards Bhavana and says "The tortillas are delicious. Very soft"

"Have one more" like a mother hen she passes one more tortilla to Aditya.

He kissed me in a way that I've never been kissed before

In a way that I want to be kissed forever more

His thumb makes lazy circles on my bare knee. My head whips towards him. Startled. What the holy hell was going on !

Brett asks "What are you doing this weekend ?"

"Nothing planned as of yet" he replies coolly as his thumb goes round and round on my knee. Relentlessly.

"We are going to Greg's lightning party. You should come"

I slide my right hand under the table and try to pry off his fingers. Try being the keyword here because his fingers dig into my skin in retaliation. Fine, you win. I give up after a few seconds.Gotta act like didn't care, maybe then he would give up. I concentrate on my beans with all intensity. They were good. Black and round. Spicy and nutritious. Black and round. Spicy and nutritious. Black and ...

"What's lightning party ?"

"It's celebrating one year since Greg was hit by lightning"

"Wicked" He laughs "Count me in"

He then faces me and says "Zoya, could you pass me the guacamole ?"

Startled by his voice, I jerk my head towards him. His hair fell in his eyes, and an easy grin spread on his face lifted with a radiant smile ... Oh, someone was playing steel drums in stomach. God, make it stop. I hated myself for going gooey at the knees. It was unacceptable to be affected by him. I should miss Amay, right ? You can't move on in a few months, correct ?

He took his hand off my knee and used his napkin to wipe his mouth. "Bhavana really the food was amazing. I haven't had home-cooked meal in ages"

"Seriously ?What have you been eating?" she asks totally falling for the charm that oozes out of every pore of his body.

"I eat frozen pizza and TV dinners, mostly. Life of a non-cook, I guess" he shrugs like he didn't just invite himself to the next fifty Tuesday dinners. Man, he's good.

"Well, you're welcome for having Tuesday dinners with us." Bhavana says, while Andie and Brett nod.

Suckers. I drop my fork in frustration. It's ridiculous how naive Bhavana is. Can't she see he's working her over.

"No, he's not" I say a little sharper than I meant to.

Everyone stops talking at the same time and looks at me.Andie looks excited over the events that are about to unfold. Apparently I have thrown down the gauntlet without even realizing that's what I was doing.

"Zoya, what's wrong with you tonight ?" Brett squints his eyes at me "Are you okay?"

I knew that he was mine

So I gave him all the love that I had

I throw my napkin on the table next to my plate, flustered and angry at myself and the current circumstances "I'm fine. I guess I'm just a little pissed that you blew off Amay all the time. All the freaking time. But, he gets invited to our lightning party, and ... basically you're about to adopt him right off the street without even knowing him. No biggie"

Everyone stares from me to Aditya. Aditya to me. Me to Aditya. Pin drop silence.Except the singer crooning in his soft voice.

And one day he took me home

To meet his Mom and his Dad

Then he asked me to be his bride

"Excuse me" I mutter and leave the room in a hurry, knowing I just showed off the very worst part of my personality - the one that speaks before thinking and the one that is sometimes stuck with the brain of a twelve year old. Something about Aditya completely throws me off my game and it's freaking me out. Why can't I just be cool ? I strom off to my room and flick on the TV, flopping down on the bed, stomach first. Smashing my pillow over the back of my head, I force myself to block out the sounds of anything but the music. I don't even want to hear my own thoughts.

There's a knock on my door "Go away" I yell.

The door pushes in and I turn over to blast the intruder with threats I fully intend to follow up on. They all go unsaid as I see Aditya standing in my doorway, holding two plates with cake and forks in them.
