A tall, sturdy man stepped into the slightly crowded room, his shoes were polished and slick. His hair was ruffled, as if he had countlessly shoved his hand through it, he wore long black trousers, a silky white shirt was tucked into them and atop the shirt a black suede blazer, rolled up to his elbows.
If one thing was clear about this man, it was that he didn't belong here.
The music began, as a chubbier man hit the tabla before him with his bare hand. His hair was slightly balding, sweat could be seen upon his forehead and upper lip. His shoes should have been binned months ago and his clothes had never seen an iron.
That was the norm, if one thing was clear about the man who hit the tabla again and hung his head back, it was that he did belong here.
A small woman stepped onto the stage, her mocha coloured eyes were hard, her steely gaze ran across the numerous men, then stopped on the suited one. Her brunette hair was in waves down to her mid back, a scarf covered her waist to her neck, the black matched her nails. Her long skirt was slightly decorated with golden gems and spirals atop a silky black material.
"Are you new, tumhaara naam kya hai" a taller, skinny man asked while chewing on some kind of leaf
The suited man gazed up at him "Aditya, Aditya Hooda"
The other man let out a gruff laugh, pulling on his green kurta "Maze karo"
The woman lifted her hand "Aise nazaar se dekha, us zalim ne chowk par" her eyes remained on Aditya who stood up from his chair when she began to sang, as if in a hypnotic state.
Her hand became a fist and she hit her chest with it "Humne kaleja rakh diya chaku ki nok par" she span around her voice dropping "Mera chain vain sab ujda zaalim nazar hata le" her eyes fell on him again "Mera chain vain sab ujda, zaalim nazar hata le, barbaad ho rahe hai ji" she lifted her hand before her face, her eyes closing slowly, her voice now a mere whisper "barbaad ho rahe hai ji"
Aditya stopped infront of the stage, for some unbeknownst reason he wanted this dancer to look at him while she sang. Never had he heard someone sing so beautifully.
"Tere apne sheher wale mera chain vain sab ujda zaalim nazar hata le, barbaad ho rahe hai ji" her hand was outstretched toward the crowd moving slowly across them "Tere apne sheher wale, meri angdai na toote tu aaja, meri angdai na toote tu aaja"
A man jumped on stage, his moustache glistening with sweat, he pulled the woman to him, his fingers skimming her waist as her eyes fluttered shut "Kajra re, kajra re, kajra re, tere kare kare naina, kajra re kajra re, tere kare kare naina" he laughed into her neck, then lifted her into his arms
Aditya felt repulsed by how this man seemingly asserted his rights on her. Yet he was helpless, she was not his to protect.
"Ho kajra re kajra re tere kare kare naina, ho kajra re kajra re tere kare kare naina"
The woman pulled back from the man when her feet touched the floor "Ho mere naina, mere naina, mere naina judwa naina"
The crowd of men shouted along "kajra re, kajra re, tere kare kare naina"
The woman bent over, her eyes catching Aditya's again, her fingers ran up her leg from her ankle, stopping at her waist before flinging her hair over to her left shoulder "Surmayee se likhe tere wade, aankhon ki zabani aate hain" her fingers brushed over her lips "Haiii, mere rumalo pe lab tere, bandh ke nishani jaate hain" she ran a handkerchief over her chest before dropping it to the floor
The man grabbed her again, dipping her in his arms "Ho teri baaton mein kimam ki khusbu hain ho tera aana bhi garmiyon ki lu hain" he nuzzled her neck with his nose "Ho teri baaton mein kimam ki khusbu hain, ho tera aana bhi garmiyon ki lu hain"
She shoved him away, her cheeks a dark red "Aaja tute na, tute na aangdai, ho meri angdai na tute tu aaja, meri angdai na tute tu aaja" her voice broke
The crowd of men all stepped forward behind Aditya "Ho kajra re kajra re tere kare kare naina, ho kajra re kajra re tere kare kare naina"
"Ho mere naina, mere naina, mere naina judwa naina" The brunette half smiled at the crowd
"Kajra re kajra re tere kare kare naina" the crowd shouted back. Aditya still remained completley still
She jumped from the stage, standing before the suited man, her fingers skimming his beard as she walked around him "Aankhein bhi kamal karti hain, personal se sawal karti hain" she returned to standing infront of him, watching as he inhaled sharply at the contact "Palko ko uthati bhi nahi, parde ka khayal karti hain"
The man from on stage grabbed her by her hair, pulling her back, Aditya reached out to stop it only to watch in distress as she landed on the stage with a thump
"Ho mera gham to kisise bhi chupta nahi, dard hota hain dard jab chubhta nahi" the man pinched her arm making her hiss loudly "Ho mera gham to kisise bhi chupta nahi, dard hota hain dard jab chubhta nahi"
She glared up at him, standing up slowly "Aaja tute na tute na aangdai ho meri angdai na tute tu aaja, meri angdai na tute tu aaja"
While the crowd sang the chorus loudly, Aditya moved to where the dancer was stood, rubbing her arm fervently. He reached out, still not knowing what on earth had made him do so when she was pulled into another man and span around
"Ho tujhse milna purani dilli main, chod aaye nishani dilli main, pal nimani dari betalab, teri meri kahani dilli main" as he sang he span her around faster till she screamed and fell into a heap on the stage, her eyes focused on her skirt in hopes she wouldn't shed a tear.
Another man crawled towards her "Kali kamali wale ko yaad karte, tere kale kale naino ki kasam khate hain, tere kale kale naino ke balaye lelu" he rose her chin with his index finger, then laughed when she turned away with haste "Tere kale kale naino ku duaaye dedu, meri jaan udaas hain, hothon pe pyaas hain, aaja re aaja re aaja re" he yanked her forward pressing his lips to hers
Aditya clenched his fists with anger, his eyes frozen on her as she shoved the man away, wiping at her lips roughly then shuffling away. He stepped closer only to be pushed back as the singing continued and a man led over her, strong hands pinning her thin wrists to the ground
She turned her head as the last line was sung, a tear fell over her nose, her eyes met his "Mujhe hifaazat karna" she whispered
