The government is unlikely to accept any foreign financial assistance for flood relief operations in Kerala, official sources said on Tuesday, which would rule out UAE's generous aid offer of Rs 700 crore for the state.

The government has taken the considered decision to rely solely on domestic efforts to tide over the situation, they said, as it feels it has the wherewithal to deal with the calamity.
India has not accepted any aid from a country or a multinational organisation since 2007 and the policy is unlikely to change now, sources said. Even during the floods in Uttarakhand and Kashmir, the Centre had declined foreign aid offers, they said.

Kerala has sought a Rs 2,600 crore special package from the Centre as it stares at a massive rebuilding exercise. The central government has so far released Rs 600 crore. The chief minister had earlier said the state had suffered damages of about Rs 20,000 crore.

But didn't he thank UAE on twitter with personal account?
600 crore seems too less compared to 2600 crore while they need 20, 000 crores acc. to article.

600 crs is for immediate relief. Center will release funds accordingly for rebuilding efforts after doing damage assessment once the rescue efforts end n rehabilitation and rebuilding process begin. That is the standard response process for any disaster happening in any part of India. Kerala also recieved massive aid and rescue material from rest of the states and citizens are contributing as well. Other than political posturing immediate foreign aid is not needed.

Why? If precedent is set, means things can never change?
BJP passed a bill to allow unlimited foreign funding to political parties with retrospective effect from 1976 so no scrutiny can take place at all. https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/national/foreign-funding-of-political-parties-after-1976-exempted-from-scrutiny/article23263844.ece

Who thinks that's a good idea please raise your hands? When foreign counties get to dictate India's poicies-win defence contracts, etc etc
But foreign aid to a flood ravaged state cant be allowed?

It's very commendable if Government wants to prove they can handle any emergency by themselves and aren't dependent on others but state of Kerala seems to disagree and is unsatisfied with the fund.
600 crore is too less even for an immediate relief.

We asked Union Gov for financial support of 2200 Cr ; they grant us a precious 600 Cr . We make no request to any foreign gov but UAE gov voluntarily offer 700cr. No, says Union gov , it is below our dignity to accept foreign aid. This is a dog in the manger policy.

Thomas Isaac@drthomasisaac

National Disaster Management Plan Chapter 9 on international cooperation accepts that in time severe calamity voluntary aid given by a foreign gov can be accepted. Still if Union Gov chooses to adopt a negative stance towards offer made byUAE gov they should compensate Kerala

I dont see any wrong in this decision. lol

I think India did not accept aid during Tsunami either.

But then again even US accepted aid during Hurricane Katrina so it does not make u any less

Maybe they are actively trying to give impression of being capable of handling ...which is fine.

No news here...

Perfectly justified, this policy is being followed for a long time and now has been continued by present government . So I don't see any problem if center thinks they are fully capable of providing relief to its citizens and hence refuse to accept foreign aid.
