You Asked It - Gold v Satyamev Jayate
Thursday 09 August 2018 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Q. Satyamev Jayate has all the ingredients for an opening as against Gold. It has super hit music, lots of action and dialogues and is a mass film and you have said that the clash is a one horse race for Gold. Surely the masses will go for Satyamev Jayate and it will beat Gold in opening which looks a pick up type film if it is any good.

J. Wadekar

A. There has to be a certain look with these mass elements for a film to really take a big opening like a mass film should. Here the real value opening is unlikely to be like a mass film with the elements you mentioned due to the look and cast. The problem the film is that despite these elements its likely to open less than a content film like Gold. Satyamev Jayate is a front loaded film so to come second best to film that has more chance to sustain is a one horse race in our books at least. Satyamev will have to have a very strong hold on Thursday to stay in the race.

Q. You have said Sacred Games is a disaster on digital but the makers are going to make the second part of the series and the makers also claimed its a huge success Overseas on Netflix

M. Sachdev

A. This is a good time to ask this question. Just last week Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster saw a third film when the first two have not been watched. These people with Sacred Games can even go a step ahead and do more. Sadly this is how the industry works. The fact remains this sort of stuff does work in India no matter how much people shout. There were these big projects on TV like Yudh and 24 featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor respectively and these were also called hugely successful when they were disasters in reality. This was simply because the audience can see the presentation and story telling is off and Sacred Games is similar. The truth can be hidden with Sacred Games as there are no figures and so the media can easily push the fake success story but the industry knows. As for the claim about Overseas then many things are claimed. Netflix has huge presence in North America and Europe and its pretty much certain the local audience does not care for an Indian web series or for that matter Indian cinema.

Q. There is a lot controversy about this film Mulk this week and a lot of media is saying the film has worked and the reviews are also very good. Does it really have a chance?

S. Imtiaz

A. Its a comedy circus. The reason why they are probably saying it has worked is because they probably liked it themselves. The film is struggling to recover its marketing costs from its theatrical release. Leaving all that aside when a film actually is liked and works its gets numbers unless there is some external reason which is not the case here. You cant fool the public with such a low grosser as they can see through this today and just see the people doing this as comedians. Its like Sacred Games above, real success does not have to be pushed.

Lol Box Office India and it's hatred towards anything that is not commercial or not massy. How does he know whether it's a successful project or not when Netflix themselves haven't revealed any numbers nor are they going around promoting the show as a successful one. On top of that, the fact that Netflix is ready to make the second season means it has been profitable for them otherwise why would they invest in a completely new market on content that's non English and country specific?

I personally was underwhelmed by Sacred Games.
However, I live in the United States and I saw so many media channels here covering and praising Sacred Games. It showed up as suggested viewing for many people who were into other Netflix Originals like Narcos and 3%. So the success is not fake. Netflix recently has been very sharp and aggressive in its content - with a willingness to chop failures. That a second season has been ordered shows that Sacred Games succeeded per Netflix's portfolio standard.

We cannot gauge streaming on the same level as theatrical releases or weekly/daily television shows. Reputable review sites have adapted their success criterion for streaming releases. BOI seems to be unwilling to do so.
