Popular South Indian Actress Trisha's comment about feminism & pay disparity, gender bias at workplace has left many in shock. Speaking about gender bias, she said, "Gender bias is universal, something that's there in every industry. I'm not a feminist at all. I believe in equality. Fortunately, my journey has been very cushioned in this industry. I haven't felt the bias.

The accepted definition of feminism in simple terms is "the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Despite feminism standing for equality, both Indian and international celebrities have taken pains to emphasise that they are not feminists but believe in equality. It can be ignorance or an attempt to avoid tags that come from being a feminist. Both are hard to fathom for women in influential positions who are reaping the benefits of what feminism has achieved till date.

In Trisha's case, the comment is especially shocking as she was recently appointed UNICEF's Celebrity Advocate for child rights.

She also spoke about pay disparity and said that the actors are able to demand more money because the movie sells on their name. When actors like Nayanthara and Samantha & sai pallavi are enjoying stardom that is equal to their male contemporaries in the industry, this excuse for pay disparity in the industry from an actor who has been a part of it for two decades now is surprising.

Actor Trisha, who has made her debut in the Malayalam film industry might want to learn a thing or two from actors who recently stood up for their colleague who was sexually assaulted and their right by quitting AMMA.

What a dumb statement from someone who is often abused on tamil social media and meme pages as "Kelavi"(Grandma) even though she is much younger than their idols Ajith & Vijay!

"Feminism to me is equality. There is no man over woman and vice versa. Feminism is a very misconstrued and misunderstood topic."As soon as we say feminism, it does not mean all men should become subordinate and women should be the ones who rule the world. The only way we can have a progressive and successful country or world is when men and women treat each other as equals, -Freida Pinto

Not surprised honestly to hear this from her. And desiking3 gave an accurate description of what feminism means. Celebs should stop using the term feminist if they don't know what it means. They're only making a fool of themselves, especially when they claim that they believe in equality and putting feminism and the progress made through the feminist movement down.

More n More women dont want to be tagged with Feminism and wud rather support Equality instead. Bcoz it is clear that Feminists do not believe in Gender Equality in real.

Once again, the feminist bullies will gang up to mock n taunt her without introspecting why people are not associating Feminism with Equality anymore.

Only chauvinists and ungrateful scared women who fear the wrath of these chauvinists would label and portray feminism as something very extreme and violent. Just because of a few bad examples you cannot go ahead and bash a whole movement whose ideology is equality and equal rights. It's so unfair to stereotype and generalise it with all this negativity. What's more saddening is hearing such ignorant words from women who actually enjoy these rights thanks to all those feminists who have worked for them to achieve it. What can you expect from men when women themselves have no self-respect or respect for something that was made for their own benefit? Such women truly doesn't deserve these rights go back to your dark ages.

Firstly, there's a difference between ideology and people who practice an ideology. Feminism is an ideology. The core principle of feminism is equality- women have been fighting for ages to have equal rights such as the right to vote, right to equal pay. Just because a few "feminists", misuse the ideology does not mean that feminists do not believe in equality. Don't judge the huge group of people who believe in feminism, based on the small group who misuse it. This is a gross generalisation, especially when applied to other ideologies like religion, can evoke a lot of rife and grief.

Partly this can be attributed to the media, which blows up the incidents where feminism is misused, which is right. But the media also fails to highlight as extensively the positive impacts of feminism and how feminism is used correctly to empower both men and women. Just because of a few people who misuse the ideology, you don't dissociate yourself from the ideology. But rather educate others on the correct application of the ideology, which many celebs such as Emma Watson have been doing.

Finally, when Trisha, despite her extensive education and exposure, can say such nonsense and indirectly put down decades of progress attained through feminism. Why can't we call her out for her silly statement?
