Kumkum Bhagya to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein: Why these big daily soaps are losing out in ratings war

The magic of long-running daily soaps seems to be waning with each passing day. There was a time when TV shows went on for years, even decades together and enjoyed high TRPs. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kasauti Zindagi Kay, Kumkum Pyara Sa Bandhan...and till recently Kumkum Bhagya and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.

But not anymore. Even 9-year-old Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has lost its position in Top 3 as people are clearly bored of ever-repetitive twists and turns surrounding Naira and Kartik and their family.

Two recently-launched weekend shows have been topping the rating charts of late--Naagin 3 (9.9 million impressions) and Dance Deewane (6.8 million impressions). Another TV show that has captured the imagination of the viewers is Ishq Subhan Allah (6.0 million impressions), a Muslim drama based on Triple Talaq. The taste of the viewers seems to be evolving with the advent of digital platforms and makers are daring to make shows on diverse themes.

For example, shows like Kullfi Kumar Bajewala (5.9 million impressions), Krishna Chali London have paved their way to the top 10 of the rating chart and are being watched widely by the viewers across rural and urban segment.

Coming back to the daily soaps, these shows are trying in vain to impress the viewers with their cliched and done-to-death twists. Kumkum Bhagya, that topped the ratings chart for almost a year, is out of the top 5 and the time is not far away when the show will meet the fate of Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel's Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.

YHM that was in top 5 not long before has finally been ousted from the top 20 shows list this week, released by BARC India. The viewers lost interest in the show completely after the show's lead character Ishita killed her son who was about to throw acid on a girl's face.

Ishqbaaz (3.4 million impressions), Udaan (3.6 million impressions), Shakti Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki (5.5 million impressions)are other shows do not enjoy the same popularity anymore. They are struggling to find a place even in top 20 now.

The verdict is loud and clear. People want variety and they will not settle for sub-standard content anymore.

The trp system itself is faulty. How can only 30000 TV sets be used to determine the taste of the viewers of the entire nation?

TRP system can be accurate only when each and every TV set will be counted.

Sabse sub standard toh KCL kaa hai and any article in which that show is praised should not be taken seriously🥱

They need some treatment maybe something like fall in ratings n ultimately revenue

Last week KCL was at 12th rank. If writer wanted he or she could have mentioned about other shows in top 10 but he or she chose KCL which is not in top ten🥱

Something seriously wrong with TRPs nowadays or just overall ratings of all the shows have gone done. If I remember correctly NK used to have around 1.6 1.7 ratings for longest time but was still nowhere near top 10 back then and was at bottom 20 list. Competition was tough then and shows in top 10 actually had more than 2 point ratings. But now shows with 1.7 ratings get included into top 10.

I guess overall viewership of all shows have gone that's why all these new shows are topping in ratings chart without even reaching 2 points. How unlucky were we actually when NK was air it had 1.8 but still struggled to go beyond top 15 at times. And now it's off air all these other shows called successful for having average trps NK pulled off for having same ratings but they deem these new shows successful for having same average ratings...

NK really was an unlucky show for fans

NK really was an unlucky show for fans

NK was a top online show and top internationally . Most of its viewers were younger adults who preferred watching the show online rather than on tv ...that's why the tv trps were low. The amazing thing is that when the fandom realised we had to watch it on tv to increase the trips to keep the show going on air...everyone cAme to the party aNd the trps increased ..when the show ended it was in the top 15 for a few weeks and top position online . Fans were watching it both online and on tv. NK has a huge loyal fan base and the fans are amazing ..especially our twitter fandom that keeps up the trends and are constantly tweeting to the channels And ph to get the show back. 😊
