Similarity between Greek Gods and Hindu Gods

Kartikeya:

Kartikeya, also known as Murugan, Skanda, Kumara, and Subrahmanya, is the Hindu god of war and victory in Hinduism.

His role is similar to that of ARES , who was the Olympian god of war, battlelust, courage and civil order.

Dhanvantari/Aswins:

Dhanvantari is the Hindu God of Medicine, the Master of Universal Knowledge, Physician of Gods and the Guardian Deity of Hospitals. Also the Asvins (also spelled Ashvins or Aswins) are inseparable twin gods of medicine and healing who occupy an important place in Hindu pantheon.

Their roles are similar to Asclepius, the God of medicine, health, healing, rejuvenation and physicians.

Dev Vishwakarma:

In Hindu mythology, Viswakarma is considered as the Divine Architect. Vishwakarma is called 'Devashilpi' or 'The Architect of Gods' .

His comparison can be made with a real God of innovation and technology ,which is Athena. She taught man the art of agriculture, mathematics, apiculture, metalwork, etc. She taught women the art of weaving and other handicrafts. She invented the bridle, which permitted man to tame horses, the trumpet, the flute, the pot, the rake, the plow, the yoke, the ship, and the chariot.

Though they are more focused on the arts (and oddly astronomy) than on technology or craftsmanship, the Muses might be considered goddesses of innovation and can be compared somewhere with Vishwakarma.

Kamdev & Rati:

Kamadeva, is known as the Indian Cupid. He is the Hindu God of love and sexuality. Rati is the Hindu goddess of love, carnal desire, lust, passion and sexual pleasure.

Their roles can be compared with Eros , who was the Greek god of Love , sexual desire, attraction, and procreation.

Yama:

Yama is the god of Patala. He is also the god of death, who determines the justice that each soul will receive, and their path after they die. It is believed that Yama was the very first human to die, which is why he has the task of presiding over where the dead will rest. He is also referred to as Dharma, which roughly translated means cosmic order, as he is dedicated to keeping harmony.

Hades is the Greek God of the Dead and King of the Underworld. He resides in the underworld and passes judgement on the souls that pass from one life to the next. He's known for his sense of justice. In that sense he's very much like our own God of Death, Yama.

Thanatos , the god of death can also be compared.

Surya dev

Helios, is the god and personification of the Sun in Greek mythology , just like Surya dev.

Surya dev can also be compared with Apollo who was the god of light.

Usha

Eos is cognate to the Vedic goddess Ushas , the goddess of dawn.

Chandra dev

Selene was regarded as the personification of the moon itself. So , Chandra dev can be compared to him.

Lakshmi/Kubera

Kubera is the Lord of Wealth and the god-king of the semi-divine Yakshas in Hindu mythology. Also , Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity who provides the beings with all kinds of material abundance.

So , they can be compared with Plutus , the Greek god of wealth.

Ganesh

Ganesh is the god that can remove all obstacles. He is the one who can change worry and concern to success. He can bring wealth and prosperity. So, he can be compared with Tyche , the goddess of good luck.

Varuna

Varuna is the god of oceans. His role can be compared with Poseidon , who was god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses

Narada

Narada is a Vedic sage, famous in Hindu traditions as a traveling musician and storyteller, who carries news and enlightening wisdom. He travels to distant worlds and realms.

His role can be compared with Hermes , who is quick and cunning. He can move between the world of Gods and the world of men at will. He's the messenger of the Gods. In many myths he's a trickster who outwits the Gods for the good of humankind. Narada, the Hindu equivalent, shares all these traits, except that he's the spiritual son of Vishnu, the most important God of the Trinity.

Indra

In the Vedas, Indra is the king of Svarga (Heaven) and the Devas. He is the god of the heavens, lightning, thunder, storms, rains and river flows.

He can be compared with Zeus , the god of the sky, lightning, thunder, law, order, justice, King of the Gods and the "Father of Gods and men.

If there is one trait that Zeus and Indra share, it is their love of women. A complete list of Zeus's lovers is going to occupy a post by itself, so I will just name a few here: Ganymede, Selene, Io, Callisto, Europa and Danae, all of whom were given a place in the cosmos as the planet Jupiter's satellites. Indra's most famous conquest is that of Ahalya, whom he seduces after taking the form of her husband, Sage Gautama. The modus operandi is also similar to Zeus's: the latter once seduces Persephone after she becomes the queen of the underworld by assuming the form of her husband and his younger brother, Hades. (Does it get creepier than that?)

Indra is considered the God of rain, and his weapon, the Vajrayudha, is said to be a thunderbolt. Though there is no competing myth in the case of Zeus as to how the weapon came into being, his very voice carries a deep rumble, it is said, and he's often depicted in art with a live streak of lightning trapped in his closed fist.

Rahu & Ketu

Rahu is greed incarnate (a head who doesn't have a toros hence can never be satiated) Rahu is all scheming and scaming. He is a legendary master of deception who signifies cheaters, pleasure seekers, operators in foreign lands, drug dealers, poison dealers, insincere & immoral acts, etc. Ketu brings about spiritual enlightenment. Unfortunately it does through the placement of problems, pain and roadblocks, which are meant to help us in our spiritual growth.

His role can be compared with At, who is the Greek goddess of mischief, delusion, ruin, and folly. Also Adikia , who is the goddess and personification of injustice and wrong-doing can be compared.

Last , but not the least our favorite god Shani Maharaj. He is the god of justice. He is a planet of Karma as he presides over our actions. Accordingly, he punishes bad deeds and rewards good deeds. As a strict taskmaster, through punishment, he teaches patience, discipline, effort and endurance in difficult times. He also inspires one to perform good deeds in the present birth.

His role can be compared with some greek gods:

1)Athena who was the Olympian goddess of wisdom and good counsel.

2)Themis , who is the goddess of divine justice. The ability of the goddess Themis to foresee the future enabled her to become one of the Oracles of Delphi.Consort for Themis is Zeus (who is compared to the Hindu god Indra).

3)Eunomia, who was the goddess of law and legislation who maintained the stability of society.

4)Dike or Dice , who was the goddess of human justice and the spirit of moral order and fair judgement based on immemorial custom, in the sense of socially enforced norms and conventional rules.

5)NEMESIS , who was the goddess of indignation against, and retribution for, evil deeds and undeserved good fortune. She was a personification of the resentment aroused in men by those who commited crimes with apparent impunity, or who had inordinate good fortune.Nemesis directed human affairs in such a way as to maintain equilibrium. Her name means she who distributes or deals out. Happiness and unhappiness were measured out by her, care being taken that happiness was not too frequent or too excessive. If this happened, Nemesis could bring about losses and suffering. As one who checked extravagant favours by Tykhe (Tyche) (Fortune), Nemesis was regarded as an avenging or punishing divinity.

so nicely written and informative post!
wanna add something

The Gods of both cultures live on mountains. If Zeus presides over Mount Olympus, Indra rules over Mount Meru.

In the Iliad, Thetis, the sea Goddess, mother of Achilles, does everything she can to prevent her son from embarking on the journey to Troy, because she knows he will die before its walls. At his death, she comes in a wave to take her son's body deep into the sea before he could be cremated. In the Mahabharata, Ganga, the river Goddess, gives birth to Bhishma, who goes on to die in the great war of his age. And on his fall, too, his remains are returned to his mother. In both epics the most valiant and powerful hero of the age is sired by a Goddess of water.

Karna and Achilles also share a lot of similarities. The most striking similarity is their armor. Both of them had a kind of an impenetrable armor which almost made them invincible. Both of them were one of the most skilled warriors in their respective epics.

Not only that, just like Achilles, Karna too was a demigod. And before the war, both of them were requested by their respective mothers not to participate in the war.

If we read epic carefully, then we can understand that it was the death of these two warriors that eventually led to the end of both the wars.

Apart from Karna, Achilles has also been compared with Bhisma, as both were born to a water goddess.
