Zaira Wasim, 17, Reveals Struggle With Depression: Had Suicidal Thoughts, Self-Loathing

"I was always pushed into the bubble of denial," said Zaira Wasim (courtesy zaira.wasim00)

New Delhi:

1Zaira Wasim opened up about depression in a lengthy post
2"I would just lie to myself," said Zaira Wasim
3"And call the doctors crazy," she added

Dangal actress Zaira Wasim opened up about suffering from depression in a lengthy note, which she posted on all her social media accounts on Friday. In her note, the 17-year-old actress writes that after repeatedly being told she was "too young to be depressed" and that depression is "just a phase," she has finally mustered the courage to admit that she was diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression four-and-a-half years ago "without being ashamed, embarrassed and having the fear of being judged for it." Writing about her battle with depression, Zaira said suicidal thoughts, starving, daily dosage of medicines and restlessnes is what defined her days. "Perhaps it could've been *JUST A PHASE* but this awful phase has put me in situations I never wished or chose to be in," she wrote on Facebook.

"Popping 5 antidepressants every day, anxiety attacks, being rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night, feeling empty, restless, anxious, hallucinations, having sore limbs from sleeping too much to not being able to sleep for weeks, from overeating to starving myself, unexplained fatigue, body ache, self-loathing, nervous breakdowns, suicidal thoughts were all parts of this PHASE," Zaira added in her note.

The Secret Superstar actress mentioned that she was made to believe that "there's no such thing as depression" and that it can only be diagnosed in those above the age of 25. "I was always pushed into the bubble of denial, despite knowing the reality and I would always lie to myself and others and just shake my head in yes when they would say - It's nothing, you're too young to be depressed, I would just lie to myself and call the doctors crazy," she wrote.

Zaira ended her post with an announcement of sorts, in which she wrote about taking a break from social media. "I just need a complete break from everything, my social life, my work, school and especially social media. I'm really looking forward to the holy month of Ramadhan as it may be the perfect opportunity to figure things out. Please remember me in your prayers," she said. Zaira also thanked her family and near and dear ones for "being patient" with her.

CommentsPerhaps it's safe to say that Zaira Wasim's tryst with social media has not been a rather pleasant one. At the beginning of last year, the actress was trolled for meeting Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, after which she posted an apology and deleted it. In December, the teen actress was trolled yet again after she alleged molestation by a middle-aged man on a flight. Instagram posts made previously on Zaira Wasim's account appears to have been deleted and the actress was also recently spotted changing her Facebook profile photo to one that reads: 'Hope.'

Zaira Wasim was last seen in Secret Superstar - her second film with Aamir Khan. She made her Bollywood debut with 2016's Dangal, also starring Aamir.

My advice to her would be to stop working in movies for next 5 years and then re-enter again after education.

When kids start too young, and then try to spread gyaan and talk about depression and all at age of 17 it does not go well with common people

Same thing happened with Malala. She is not liked by many in Pakistan precisely for the reason that common person take it as fake. They see normal 15 year olds around them and then they see someone in pain for the world and trying to act Benazir at age of 16.

So stop worrying about world problems...get ur education...come when u r mature.

These child artists often end up failing in life ...

I am surprised that parents have not observed this

Well, a part of education is about worrying about world problems and become aware. They are teenagers and not toddlers. We should always learn from our history so that mistakes aren't repeated and that should be taught to kids so that they are raised without any hatred and aware of their surroundings so that they can be a part of solving the world problems when they grow up. There's nothing more amazing that kids being aware of the world they are living in and trying to understand and be a part of debates and discussions. That's what growing up is all about.

Like you said, Malala is not liked by many pakistanis because she speaks about things that kids her age normally don't speak up there in Pakistan. But that's not because the kids there don't want to, it's because people there don't encourage kids to speak up. And be it Pakistan or India, this is a very desi thing where parents like to keep their kids in a bubble, all safe and pampered and then suddenly one day they are let off in this big bad world and they are lost and puzzled and stuggle to cope up.
I've seen so many people including teenage influencers like AIB mocking the concept of something like Model United Nations. I don't get why people don't encourage such stuff and rather keep making fun of such things? Can there be anything better than teenagers thinking about their society, country and world problems and indulging in civil debates and discussions to help solve world problems? They are the future, if they don't indulge in such things and don't think about world problems, then who will?

Sure, their debates and discussions will not be mature or sometimes will not make sense but atleast these kids are trying to have a dialogue. No one expects maturity at the age of 15-17 when people aged 50-60 speak about immature stuff on national platforms. I really don't get this desi mentality of 'arey bachcha hai, bachpan enjoy karen do' attitude. Teenagers are not kids, let them get out of the cocoon into the real problem and start dealing with real problems and finding solutions for the same. That's how you'll start learning how to deal with the world when you grow up.

Instead, all we do is discourage these kids from trying to grow up and help in letting them stay immature. In school, people who run clubs and take part in public speaking classes are passed off as nerds, when you do the same in junior college , you are passed of as silly intellectual and activist. No one encourages dialogue. All we do throughout our life is just keep making fun of others while we ourselves are good for nothing. And then make a hue and cry about how other countries are so advanced and first world while we are stuck in a sad third world country with no good leaders!

We are the reason for our own problems!

After ruining an innocent co passenger's life she is back again. It's her parents who are doing this to her. Let her grow up normally, get her medical help for depression. Adolescence is the Time parents need to watch over their kids

Expression at school college level is different than becoming a celebrity and then giving gyaan to whole world than debating it in ur school or college. No one is denying education here..also who will judge what they are being taught? what history? what mistakes? anyway thats another debate.

Malala story will be one of the biggest con in the history of mankind. lol. Her father is a manipulative, fake, materialistic person who was catering to a certain point of view and was cashing in those days and used her little daughter...unfortunately terrorists thugs went after her school and she was injured..and the cunning fox utilized this incident to fullest. the parents of other girls were normal people with no connections so their daughters could not become the beacon of mankind. then came the cash, citizenships, gyaan and noble prize. anyway i just gave her example..my point was different

i dont think so anyone is forcing anyone not to speak... i never saw that

there is time for everything...when u r in school or college ur focus is studies...u do debate...u do discuss..u play sports...there is complete package...there is no need for u to go out in in the world too soon... yes one can debate about telling desis to stop their fascination for making their kids engineers and doctors and do away with this mindset and expand but this does not mean one needs to think about world problems ..when u cant even vote. lol

i believe in doing everything on time...yes there will be few who are ahead of their time..but there still needs to be a system in place and everyone has to go through it

as i said there is time for everything... i dont think world problem needs teenager input lol

one needs to be balanced...i am not into desi model but then i am not into western model either

problem is one becomes extreme

answer is in the middle...we desis also have great things going on...family values...respect for elders...these are good things..

Instead, all we do is discourage these kids from trying to grow up and help in letting them stay immature. In school, people who run clubs and take part in public speaking classes are passed off as nerds, when you do the same in junior college , you are passed of as silly intellectual and activist. population, lack of education is basic problem which then leads to poor leaders... who then focus on politics..there is genetics as well..

its not about school debates...genetics + population is cause of problems .. u cant change genes..but u need to control population, give them education and come up with UR OWN MODEL...and STOP COPYING ...then there will be improvement lol

We are the reason for our own problems!

She filmed dangal when she was 14. Released when she was 16. Then secret superstar when 17. In between she won 2 national awards..gave numerous interviews for secret superstar with stylists doing her looks and all. She got into trouble twice..first some politics thing and then allegedly falsely accusing someone for as serious a crime as molestation. Kiran rao also stated she should have had raised concerns in the plane or complained the staff then going live on instagram.
Secondly, if she was into depression and was taken to the hospital then why she never discussed it with aamir. Aamir is apparently her friend. During secret superstar filming she was told by aamir khan productions not to post on social media till the release. He knew shes a kid and ends up into controversies.
If indeed it is depression, then the root cause is either something to do with her childhood, or that she is a kid and all this shooting, recognition, glamour and media is too much for a teenager.

Depression is very difficult to diagnose in early stages- many doctors put an anxiety diagnosis and patients take anxiety meds, which is not a way to cure depression.
Best way for parents and family/friends is to sustain the patient with positivity and CBT(behavioural therapy), 10 Steps type self help therapy..counselling.. a lot of outdoor activities if possible. Lack of vitamins and overabundance of carbs/fats can also influence moods/states.
Whether she has depression or another condition, I am wishing the girl to really get well, get a lot of checkups and get a proper diagnosis first.
