LIZ'S SONG OF THE DAY

Main hoon ek khalasi from the movie Sargam (1950) starring Raj Kapoor and Rehana.
This song is a personal favorite. I first heard (and saw) it as a little kid on a TV show and I loved the song and the picturization so much that it has stayed with me all these years! It isn't a famous song at all, probably wasn't even a hit when it was released. The music director C. Ramchandra tasted tremendous success with a later release Albela that came out in 1951.
This song is unique in the combination of Raj Kapoor and Chitalkar playing back for him. Chitalkar is none other than C. Ramchandra himself, he used this name when he did playback which he often did when he was giving music.
The lyrics by Pyarelal Santoshi are pretty straightforward and fun!

Main German na japani😉
Afghani na irani😆
Na turk baluchistani 😃
na gora Englisstani 😛
Main prem nagar ka wasi 😆
mera naam ha bhimpalasi 😃

Raj Kapoor is so rocking in this song! This was early RK days before he sunk into his Chaplinesque persona, and he looks so suave and handsome here. Plus his dancing skills are to be seen to be believed! He has a natural rhythm that's hard to emulate and his expressions are spot on! This song has an infectious rhythm that became C. Ramchandra's trademark. You can hear it in Albela's Shola jo bhadke too.

The video isn't available to view here but you can watch it direct on Youtube. Here's the link.

Incidentally, this movie has another song with someone's introducing themselves -
Main hoon Alladin...mere paas chirag-e-cheen!! 😆😆

LIZ'S SONG OF THE DAY
Tarari Tarari from the movie Dastaan (1950)

Raj Kapoor's pre-Chaplin days (as I like to call them 😉) had him playing suave and sophisticated heroes. Again a unique combination for RK - Music by Naushad and playback by Mohd Rafi. RK swore by Shankar Jaikishen and many of his non-RK production movies also had music by them. And Naushad usually gave music for Dilip Kumar movies or historical ones that suited his style of composing.
Another reason this song stands out is because of its style. Naushad was a fierce traditionalist and his songs were always based on folk music or Indian Classical ragas. He scorned western tunes, so this song is such a huge departure from his usual style! One of the few times Naushad has scored a western tune and that too a waltz!
I talked about Raj Kapoor's innate sense of rhythm earlier and it shows in this dance too. He's a natural and does his steps with ease. Suraiyya, his co-star, was supposedly nervous as she wasn't known to be a dancer and her partner's obviously superior dancing skills made her even more aware of her shortcomings. It must've helped that they were childhood friends and thus were very much at ease with each other as is evident in the song. Apparently, RK used to teasingly call Suraiyya "Kallu". 😆 They seem to be having so much fun in this song!😳
The song itself is a happy, uplifting waltz, so beautifully sung by Rafi and Suraiyya. It does seem strange hearing a voice other than Mukesh's from RK's lips, but this song is perfect for Rafi. His voice is so damn adaptable and ebbs and flows along with the song's tune. The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni, Naushad's staple partner, are simple and sweet, befitting the song.

Kehta hai dil mera chaliye wahan
Har din ho saawan hi saawan jahan
hum tum ho rimjhim ka ek saaz ho
bas teri aur meri aawaaz ho
gaaye mil milke hardam
tararararum tararararum tarumpum tarumpum tararumpum
