'Hichki' movie review: Is it the best comeback for Rani Mukerji?
Anita Iyer
Filed on March 22, 2018

Rani Mukerji, one of Bollywood's most versatile actresses, makes her comeback this week with 'Hichki'.

Rani, who plays Naina Mathur, a woman with Tourette syndrome, is struggling to get a job as a teacher but fails as her tics are beyond her control. Finally, she gets an opportunity and a bigger challenge in the form of tutoring 14 unruly students, who come from financially weak backgrounds and are struggling to be accepted by their school. How she forms a bond with them and changes their lives forms the crux of the film.

The movie wins you within the initial few minutes as Rani introduces us to Tourette syndrome and walks us through her challenging life from childhood. You can feel her pain and emotions as she keeps it real yet never comes across as a victim. She rather emerges as a fighter in spite of her circumstances.

The job that she finally lands of tutoring the rowdy bunch is expectedly predictable as they go ahead and indulge in ragging and even betting on how long she can last. While we could recognise some familiar faces among the students, most were newcomers and that brings the rawness to the film.

We are briefly introduced into the lives of the children but don't really know their back stories. This makes it difficult to empathise with them and you don't really connect with their struggles. Although they are central to the film, you don't move with their emotions and that is probably the weakest part of the script.

Even Naina's bond with her family seems superficial. We have the Pilgaonkars -- Supriya and Sachin -- playing her parents but the film doesn't invest much time in establishing their ties. Hussain Dalal is rightly cast as a supportive brother but the film just scratches the surface of their relationship. There could definitely have been a tear-jerking moment there!

Overall, the film is predictable as it follows the story of underdogs whose lives are changed with a stubborn teacher rooting for them. Did the director, Siddharth P Malhotra, manage to effectively translate the script into the big screen? We doubt.

And you cannot help but think of the much-acclaimed 'Taare Zameen Par', which introduced us to dyslexia and moved us emotionally. Perhaps, it was the direction that created magic in 'TZP'.

'Hichki', beyond doubt, belongs to Rani as she gets into the skin of Naina and stays in the body language of a person with Tourette syndrome throughout the film. Even in the scenes which demand heavy performances from her, she never misses the tic.

One scene in the film particularly stands out as she portrays her vulnerable best, and it is the only two minutes into the film when she breaks down. It is moments like these that keep you engaged in the otherwise average movie.

Watch it for Rani, she won't disappoint you. But leaving the cinema hall might make you wonder if this was the best comeback film for her.

Starring: Rani Mukerji, Supriya and Sachin Pilgaonkar, Hussain Dalal

HICHKI MOVIE REVIEW

  • TIMES OF INDIA
Rachit Gupta, Mar 23, 2018, 02.12 PM IST

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5

Story:
Naina Mathur (Rani Mukerji) is an aspiring teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome. After several interviews and numerous rejections, she lands her dream job as a full-time teacher in an elite school. The class she has been assigned though comprises of defiant and impish students who can't seem to keep out of trouble. Naina overcomes all challenges to help her students realise their true potential.

Review:

A teacher can be a mentor, a guide and in rare cases, even a friend. Hichki is the story of one such teacher. What makes Naina (Rani Mukerji) different from other teachers is her Tourette Syndrome. She makes hics and click noises due to a neurological disorder that she explains with spirit and wit. She fights the odds reactions to her own unsettling, hiccup-powered speech as well as her class of 14 scoundrels who mock her at every turn. These kids are a part of the right to education initiative, thus landing up in an elite school where most kids and teachers have a hoity air of high class'. No one gives Naina a chance to succeed with her bunch of no-good students. But she perseveres. That's the gist of the film. Its a fresh concept, especially from the perspective of people with disorders. Just because you're not normal, that doesn't mean you can't fit in or you can't succeed. That thought fuels the drama of the film. But the screenplay stops Hichki from being as great as it could have been. The film is engaging, insightful and entertaining but given the premise it had more potential.

Yet, there's so much to love and appreciate in director Siddharth P Malhotra's film. Owing to the Tourette Syndrome, Naina's character makes sounds like waa waa' and chak chak' at random. The placement of the waa waa' sounds in particular is most interesting. There's a sublime level of intelligence and detail in Hichki's direction that's worth appreciating. The use of out-of-the-box learning tools within the school environment adds to the film. The director does a good job at crafting and presenting the film. Sadly, the screenplay doesn't quite cut it for top grades. The first half is spent setting up the story, while the second half heightens the drama but doesn't change too many gears. Hichki is a film full of emotions, but they just don't hit the right arc, especially during the climactic portions.

That's not to say, that the film isn't worthy of a recommendation. Rani Mukerji's performance is distinction level stuff. She's consistent with the Tourette Syndrome and she makes moments of high drama look absolutely effortless. The constant knocks on the chin are pure acting masterclass. Her performance adds the proverbial punch to this story. The casting is top notch too. Young actors who portray the unruly 9F class all do a wonderful job. Harsh Mayar as Aatish, the leader of the mischievous pack is superb. Other actors portraying students in the film are all good too. Neeraj Kabi, who plays the stern science teacher Wadia, is spectacular as well. The efforts of the cast, to a large extent, overshadow the limited writing. The music by Jasleen Royal also adds a nice spark to the proceedings. Its just the right amount of fresh and fun.

Hichki had the potential to be more than just a classroom saga. It does touch upon Naina's personal struggles and her conflicted relationship with her father. But it could've explored these aspects a lot more. For all its shortcomings, the movie still has plenty of freshness, insights and emotional intelligence. It can make you nostalgic about your school days and remind you of your favourite teacher. This one definitely deserves good grades.

Hichki movie review: Rani Mukherjee gives a gritty performance in an otherwise forgettable film

Rating- 2.5*

Hichki movie review: Rani Mukherjee chooses a perfect theme to make a comeback but the question is how much of it is successful? Rani starrer Hichki tells the tale of an aspiring teacher with Tourette Syndrome. She faces massive challenges for her speech defect but she is not wavered from her dream to become a teacher. Naina Mathur (Rani Mukherjee) is struggling to land a job in the profession of her choice and her neuropsychiatric disorder stands as a major hurdle. The headstrong woman finally lands a job but it comes with conditions.

In the city's most elite school, Naina is given the responsibility to tutor 14 unruly students who belong to the lower and financially weak strata of the society. The school doesn't want them and the people around don't want to accept them. In such a situation how Naina strikes a chord with the kids and changes their lives in the midst of fighting her own weaknesses is what the story is all about.

The Siddharth P. Malhotra directorial starts off introducing Rani and her struggles with the disorder. Her challenging childhood and the continued ordeals of the adulthood makes us empathize with the character. But the film goes haywire with the entry of the students. We are given a brief introduction to their lives and the director has not taken the pain to vouch for their backstory. Therefore we as audience fail to connect with their struggles. The script in this part goes loose. Besides Naina's relationship with her parents and brother has been superficially shown. But Siddharth does justice to Rani's character and tries to elicit the best out of her.

Rani, in spite of the hiatus, has not lost out on the on-screen charisma. She does very well as the teacher giving us brief moments of humour as well as tear jerks. She makes sure that her disorder doesn't look unreal and in some of the most intense parts she looks a natural victim of the tics. Real life couple Supriya Pilgaonkar and Sachin play the reel life parents for Rani Mukherjee in the film. In spite of their impeccable acting prowess, the actors have not been used to the fullest. Hussain Dalal as the brother cracks up an adorable brother-sister duo.

In spite of Rani blooming bright in Hichki, the entire film does not live up to a perfect comeback for the talented actress. But in spite of the fact, Hichki is all in all a Rani Mukherjee film and you should only catch this up for the actress who does not wear down a little in spite of the gap.

Hichki' film review: Rani Mukerji is a delight

The actress plays a teacher living with a nervous system disorder

If you are craving for a generous dose of idealism and emboldenment, then Rani Mukerji's drama about teacher-student bonding will scratch that itch right away. It's one of those inspirational films that careens dangerously between being strongly inspirational and insipidly utopian.

Mukerji plays the unconventional teacher Naina Mathur who lives with Tourette Syndrome, a nervous system disorder marked by involuntary motor tics and grunting sounds. She has made her peace with it, but it's those around her who find it difficult to be inclusive and graceful about it.

The movie begins with her nerve-racking hunt for a teaching position. She's rejected despited being armed with multiple degrees as the deciding authorities fear that her disorder will stand in the way of her teaching. The feisty Mathur doesn't take it lying down as she gives them a crash course on Tourette Syndrome unflinchingly.

After five years of rigorous hunting, she finally lands a job at a Catholic school whose naming founder St Notker had a speech impediment. The coincidence felt contrived, but more on that later. She's is hired to teach 9F, a classroom of underprivileged rebels-slash-failures in this posh school. The school and its snobbish teachers seem to have written them off as the children of slum dwellers who don't deserve a chance. Mathur is on call to school these incorrigible teenagers.

It's a delight to watch Mukerji play Mathur with a blend of consummate conviction, grace and gravitas. It's easy to feel affectionate towards her aspirations and her unconventional methods of teaching. She's the kind of teacher who imparts physics lessons by bribing her students with boiled eggs. It works, as you wish you had a teacher who had stepped out of the box like Mukerji's character.

She also takes several blows for her students, who try their best to smoke her out of the school. From petty pranks to planning mini explosions in the class, the group of 14 have a crazy aptitude for bullying.

The first half is dominated by Mukerji winning the reluctant misfits acted out nicely by young talents such as Harsh Vyas as the rebellious Atish over with her grit. Since they are children from the slums, there are ghetto-style rap songs inserted to communicate their angst. It doesn't bode too well with the film and seems contrived.

While the performances by Mukerji and her gang of students come out with flying colours on the acting front, the film isn't high on novelty. The twists and conflicts are painfully predictable.

Actor Neeraj Kaabi plays the token snob who seems to be unnecessarily antagonistic towards the students of 9F. His tendency to vilify them seems unnecessary and Mathur is always trying to prove him wrong.

While the casting by Shanoo Sharma is spot on, the camaraderie and the bond that grows between the teacher and the students seems forced. Their kinship doesn't feel organic, which is one of the biggest let downs of Hichki. However, the easy friendship between Mathur and her sibling is touchingly real.

While Hichki is intent on communicating life-affirming philosophies such as there are no bad students, but just bad teachers' and conquer your fear and fly free', there were moments in this drama which are laboriously didactic.

The climax, which includes cheating and a painful examination as one of its plot twists, is also unnecessarily dramatic.

But that's a minor hiccup or should I say Hichki in an otherwise engaging feel-good drama. Be ready to be schooled by Mukerji who's in top form.

Hichki movie review: Rani Mukerji powers a 'no-hiccup' ride

Rani Mukerji's character suffers from Tourette's Syndrome in the film.

Hichki in Hindi means 'hiccup', but this Rani Mukerji starrer has none. The film backed by Yash Raj Films belongs to a different league altogether. And there are ample reasons for it. Director Sidharth P Malhotra takes the audience straight into a middle-class household where veteran actors Supriya Pilgaonkar, Sachin Pilgaonkar play estranged husband and wife blessed with a son and daughter.

The story moves smoothly (without any hiccup) as we are introduced to Naina Mathur aka Rani Mukerji. She suffers from Tourette Syndrome, a neurological condition which starts from the onset of childhood and results in several motor tics and at least one vocal tic sounds. As the lead actress suffers from this condition, the society finds it hard to accept her.

But here, Naina is shown as a confident, young girl who has ambitions and will try until the end to make her dreams come true. The undying spirit of a person living with a special condition every day yet never makes it an excuse to reach for the stars is what makes 'Hichki' a must watch.

Despite having excellent academic qualifications, Naina is shown the exit door every time she sits for a job interview. Well, do I really need to give any reason, why? So, she not only braves all odds to find that one perfect teaching job but also has to bear the temperament of a father, who has separated from the family and still can't come to terms with his daughter's condition.

Naina's search for the perfect job finally ends at her own alma mater and from there, her tough life begins. The script has smartly incorporated the Right To Education initiative implemented by the government where kids from the marginalised sections of the society too get access to study in a prestigious school. But is it all hunky-dory? Well, for that you should head to the halls straight away.

There are several moments where a teacher-student relationship outshines the characters and you go back in time, thinking about your own school days. Also, the sense of competition between teachers and students is as real as it gets.

The class of kids which Naina gets has acted brilliantly and the casting director must be given full marks for it. After 'Black' Rani has once again proved her acting mettle with 'Hichki' which will somewhere pull the right string and touch your hearts.

Don't go thinking it's a typical Yash Raj venture. Because with a subject like this, thankfully it's far away from their brand of cinema. Rani's 'Hichki happens to be an adaptation of 2008 Hollywood movie 'Front of the Class' which was based on the book titled 'Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had by Brad Cohen'.

Hichki Movie Review: Rani Mukerji Gets Full Marks But This Film Is Not A Class Act

Hichki Movie Review: Rani Mukerji's performance is buried under an avalanche of narrative cliches

Entertainment | Saibal Chatterjee |

Cast:Rani Mukerji, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Harsh Mayar, Shivkumar Subramaniam, Neeraj Kabi
Director: Siddharth P Malhotra
Rating: 2.5 Stars (out of 5)

A novel plot idea is buried under an avalanche of narrative cliches in Hichki. In her comeback film, Rani Mukerji gives the role of a Tourette Syndrome-afflicted teacher all she has. Full marks there! However, Hichki, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra, isn't the kind of class act that does justice to the film's larger purpose of underscoring the need for inclusion.

It is marred by more hiccups than its wafer-thin storyline can handle. The screenplay suffers from a syndrome that Bollywood fans are familiar with - it is a condition characterized by an obsession with amplified sentimentality and the tendency to offer superficial commentary.
In the opening moments, the protagonist is interviewed by the trustees of a school. At the outset, none of them has any clue what Tourette's is. They are wiser by the time the spirited heroine is done with them. But one of them still suggests to her that she should cannot be a teacher. Look for another calling, he suggests. Her parting riposte is defiant: if I have taught you about Tourette's in no time, I am sure I can handle students in a classroom, too.

Hichki isn't only about an individual's struggle to wrest and secure her rightful place in the world. Its spotlight is also on a lopsided and complacent education system that allows no leeway to those born on the wrong side of the tracks - in this case, on the wrong side of a highway and a gutter that runs alongside it. The bitter battle for acceptance waged by the pivotal character and her underprivileged students plays out on two different planes, the lines crossing each other at times, but the drama never assumes truly rousing proportions.
The neurological condition that hampers the protagonist's career prospects certainly makes Hichki a unique film in the context of Indian cinema. The novelty factor does not, however, transcend the unusual nature of the personal battles that Naina Mathur must fight. In the early portions of the film, the audience is told that she has been rejected by 18 schools simply on account of her speech and nervous system defect. But she refuses to give up on her dream.

When the strong-willed lady does eventually land a job in a missionary school named after a stuttering Catholic saint who, many centuries ago, rose above his speech impairment thanks to the power of his intellect, her disorder is reduced to a mere plot detail and the focus of the film shifts to the fraught teacher-student dynamics defined by the class divide that separates 14 slum-dwelling students and the rest of this school for affluent children.
Naina Mathur's wards - they are seen as absolute no-hopers and dumped in 9F, a division carved out for slum children in an upscale school to fulfil the requirements of the Right to Education Act - have something in common with her - a debilitating disadvantage. Hers is strictly physical, theirs is socio-economic and, by extension, psychological. She instinctively understands them; they take quite a while to grasp the importance of her mission.

The misfits under Naina's charge are treated like "municipality garbage" by the school authorities, represented by a snooty senior teacher and head of the student council (Neeraj Kabi), whose sole purpose in life seems to be show up the 9F students - five girls and nine boys. Their new teacher knows precisely what is going on, having faced prejudice all her life. She decides that the children deserve a fair shot at a better life. The principal gives her four months - that is the time that is left to go for the final examinations - to prove that these students belong here.

Despite facing numerous hurdles, including the students' open hostility towards her, which takes the form of outright bullying and pranks, Naina, using unconventional teaching methods, proceeds to show them that there is percentage in unleashing their inner potential and harnessing their angst correctly.
Like the rest of the film - Hichki is adapted from the Brad Cohen autobiography How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had, which yielded the American TV film Front of the Class - the denouement is over-dramatic and driven by the hackneyed devices of the underdog-triumphing-against-all-odds genre.

Yes, the story might have elements that appear fresh, but the treatment is overly stale. In the past decade alone, Hollywood has delivered at least four fiction films about people with Tourette's. Besides Front of the Class (2008), there has been Phoebe in Wonderland (2008), The Road Within (2014) and Hello, My Name is Frank (2015).

To Hichki goes the credit of being the first Bollywood drama to highlight TS. But in the end, in terms of its drama, it is only a pale variation on the critically acclaimed 2002 Marathi film Dahavi Fa (Class 10F), directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar. Dahavi Fa had Atul Kulkarni playing a teacher who decides to do something drastic when he sees a bunch of under-performing students being constantly discriminated against and pushed to the edge of violence-inducing despair.

The only aspect of the Rani Mukerji character that distinguishes her from the Dahavi Fa teacher is the syndrome that traps her in a set of vocal and motor tics. The remainder of the film is a replay of sorts - she takes on the school on behalf of her students and channelize their energies in a productive direction.

As the children rap, rock and rumble angrily and often self-destructively, the film rambles. Naina encourages the boys and girls in her class to spread their wings and fly. Fly they do, notably the character played by Harsh Mayar, Aatish, a rebel without a cause who stops at nothing to fight fire with fire.

The tale at the heart of Hichki is definitely inspirational. If only it had been a tad more inspired, it might have hit home with far greater force. While you readily sympathize with the plight of the teacher and her unfairly branded and segregated students, the drama of their lives never manages to heave itself out of its dullness.

Rani Mukerji's energetic, engaging performance apart, Hichki is a huff-and-puff show marked by too much mush and fuss. But it has just enough to keep tearjerker junkies interested.
