This is the last week of our favorite show, and I am sad. I am happy that you loved my other two OS before. So here is another treat for you. It is about the birth of Shani and Dhamini's Child.

Small things of happiness

Chapter 1

In his stronger moments, Shani thinks that his marriage to his Dhamini is nothing but a duty like giving Karmafal.

In his weaker moments, he knows that marriage is more than a duty, a bond, a lifelong promise.

(But that's okay, because he is detached, but he has a sensitive heart under the mask of indifference, sometimes, he too becomes emotional...so he takes it easily.)

Dhamini saw her husband in his best times and worst times, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders confidently, before he stood in front of her hesitantly and finally confessed his feelings for her.

It's both everything and nothing like she thought it would be.

He carries her to their marital bed, and smiles at her hesitantly, taking her hand in his asks if she feels the same. She smiles at him though her tears, and pulls him closer, terrified to let him go (she's always been so terrified to let him go) and he collapses in her arms, head resting in the security of her embrace and listening to her heart beat.

(She feels like her body has been set on fire and ripped apart only to be put back together.)

She'll never forget how vulnerable he felt in her arms, and the way his breath ghosts hers and the way his voice sounds as he says her name over and over again.

(Her name sounds like a hymn in his lips and Dhamini feels that she needs to protect this precious man in any cost. )

She's terrified that one day she will disappoint her husband.

Yami sees Dhamini behaving a bit odd lately. She's been feeling nauseous for the past couple of days and she's passed it off as something she ate in the celebration of Lord Rama's birth. But if it is the case, it can't persist for so long.

So, Yami decides to investigate further.

She finds Dhamini looking miserably at the food, and playing with a chopped piece of fruit absentmindedly. The expression in her face is telling that she is not particularly interested in any of those foods.

"Dhamini," Yami carefully approaches near her sister-in-law, "What's wrong? Are you worried about Shani?"

Dhamini is startled with Yami's voice, and carefully pushes the plate full of breakfast away. "Nothing." She tries to smile. Her face looks very pale.

"You don't look good, Dhamini." Yami peers at the face of her sister-in-law and shakes her head worriedly, "You must not take it lightly. You have been sick for days. Besides, where is my stupid brother?" She looks around the room in the search of her brother, but can't find him anywhere. "Does he know about your condition?

"Please, Yami," Dhamini grasps her friend's hand and shakes her head, "Don't bother Shani with this simple thing. You know how busy he is lately about Ravan's attack in Indralok."

Things turned grim since the last few months. Ravan's son was born, and now Ravan has attacked Indralok again. So Indradev again called Suryadev and Shani for help.

"But, starving yourself will not do any good." Yami smiles affectionately. "Let start with something from your favorites." She surveyes the breakfast plate and picks up a grape. "I guess it is one of your favorite."

"Right choice, Yami." Dhamini smiles, and takes the grape from her friend. And her stomach begins to churn badly as soon as she put the grape inside her mouth.

"Dhamini..." Yami stares at her with concern, "What's wrong?"

Dhamni acts on instinct when she bolts out of the room and rushes into the corner. She's just made it over the golden bowl in the corner before she loses her breakfast and dinner.

(It can't be a simple food incident, Yami can tell.)

"Dhamini?" Yami asks softly, as she walks besides her friend. Her curly hair is all that Dhamini can see in her peripheral vision, as she kneels next to her and rubs a hand over her back. "You must not ignore it anymore. We must tell Shani..."

"It's fine." Dhamini croaks. "Everything is fine. It's just the food probably."

Yami stares at her with disbelief in her eyes, and she can feel it is not so simple.

Devi Chayya soon finds out about Dhamini's illness, and finally decides to call Shani and h is wife to know what is actually wrong. Dhamini looks so tired and nervous, as she follows her husband to meet at her sister in law and her mother in law. Shani looks equally tensed like his wife, as he supports her inside.

With one glance of her daughter-in-law, Devi Chayya realizes what is wrong with her.

She takes her inside and quietly asks Dhamini about her monthly cycles, and Dhamini suddenly realizes that she has missed last two months. But she has not noticed it because she was so busy worrying about Ravan's impending attacks on Suryalok. When she realizes what has really happened, her eyes grow wide.

A big smile appears on the face of Devi Chayya, and she pulls her close.

She holds her daughter-in-law at the arms' length, and smiled, "I am so proud of you today, daughter." She caresses her head gently, and Dhamini feels that her mother would do the same if she were alive today. Yami smiles too, and pulls her close.

Only Shani stands there silently with an utter expression of confusion in his face.

"Mata, is Dhamini going to be alright?" He sounds both concerned and confused. "Does she needs any special treatment? Do I need to inform Grandfather?" Worry for his wife's health crosses his usually calm face.

"No, son, Dhamini is alright." Devi Chayya smiles affectionately seeing the confused look in her son's face. He might be the Karmfaldata, but he can be so clueless in many things. But it only makes her heart flooding with affection for her son more.

"How can she be alright?" Shani asks impatiently , his frown only grows deeper. "Look at her, Mata. She looks like a shadow of her former self." Devi Chayya keeps smiling without giving him any clue, and it makes his confusion to grow more. For once she feels extremely proud of her son being worried for his wife. It pleased her to see that Shani fiinally found the the true meaning of love.

"Yami, He looks at his sister for help.

"It's better to hear from your wife." Yami punches his arm playfully.

Dhamini feels pity for her clueless husband, and it makes her to love him more.

He is so precious; she only hopes she will not disappoint him.

Chapter 2

Dhamini is nervous and terrified. She has not got any chance to talk with Shani yet, because soon after the meeting he was dragged into the court by Kakol to discuss something important.

She looks at her reflection, and places a hand over her stomach. She is not showing yet, but she knows their child is growing in there.

(Yami tells her she became more beautiful than before, and that most pregnant women would kill to be like her, Dhamini feels oddly pleased).

Their child! She has never dreamt to have her and Shani's child inside her. They have been though a lot together. What if their child has to suffer too?

She shakes her head to pry the thought away. No she must not think like that.

She closes her eyes, trying picture the little life growing inside her. A beautiful face crosses her mind, a pair of deep brown eyes...the eyes she falls in love with everyday.

She has probably been lost in her dreams, but soon her eyes fly open when someone enters into the room. She's pressed against the wall as soon as she stands and opens her mouth to scream when impatient hands pull her sari up and large warm hands press against her stomach.

(She knows those hands. She's aches for those hands every day.)

"Shani?" She breathes, her voice breaking the stillness of their room.

He says nothing, just leans against her slightly, hands pressed against her stomach.

He knows.

(Dhamini wonders idly if he's trying to search for her baby's-their baby's-pulse.)

The first person Suryadev tells about the newest member of the family is Indradev. He falls off his silver throne.

"You are becoming a grandfather?" He chokes on his Madira.

"Shani and Dhamini are going to have their first child." Suryadev replies with a proud smile in his lips. His glow is burning a shade brighter and Indradev shields his eyes to escape his brightness.

"And I expect you to bless the would be parents in the party I am going to arrange in their honor."

"Impossible... Indradev jumps from his chair, "After everything Shani did to my reputation, how can you expect me to attend the party?"

"You know how, Indradev..." Suryadev raises his eyebrows, enjoying both angry and puzzled expression in Indradev's face, "Or do I need to tell everyone how many illegitimate children you have?"

Indradev turns red with embracement, and leaves the court hastily.

(He still can't believe that Suryadev starts acting like a dotting grandfather so soon.)

Being the mighty Sun God, Suryadev never imagined being a grandfather can be equally pleasant as being a father. And this happiness is brought by the son he despised most.

He has arranged a grand celebration to celebrate this great news. He sits in his throne and watches all the Devas showering their blessing over the would be parents. Shani is expressing his gratitude to all who brought gift for their unborn child, and Dhamini is accepting the gifts with a shy smile in her lips. She is practically glowing beside her husband.

Suryadev can't ignore the expression of love and pride in his son's eyes for his wife and it oddly reminds of his own rough behavior with his youngest son. Suddenly an odd feeling of guilt fills his heart. He turns his gaze upon Devi Chayya and she squeezes his hand reassuringly.

When it comes his turn to bless the proud couple, he says nothing but hugs his son tightly.

Everyone in the court grasps in surprise, and Suryadev feels Shani stiffening in his arms. He is not really expecting this, at least from his father who always despises him. But he ignores the feeling and keeps hugging his son, letting his tears of guilt finally flow.

"Can you forgive me, son, for everything I did to you?" He whispers in his ears.

He feels Shani's hot tears over his skin, and finally he begins to relax. "Yes, father." He says after a long pause.

It is the first time in his life, Suryadev is addressed by Shani as his father.

Finally when they break apart, everyone is still wiping their eyes. Dhamini walks beside her husband and together they bowed in front of Suryadev.

"Bless our child, father." Shani smiles though his tears; Dhamini squeezes his arm in support.

"Of course, son." Suryadev put his arms around his son and daughter-in-law and pulls both of them in a hug.

(Suryadev knows he will have a great time with his grandchild.)

Yam can't deny that he sometimes feels a sharp pang of jealousy whenever he sees everyone in the Surya family hovering over Dhamini and Shani like protective guardians. Devi Chayya and Yami are always watching them with hawk-like eyes, ready for the moment when the couple decides to completely lose it.

(Yam hasn't gotten to that point in time yet, but he has no doubt his break in sanity is rapidly approaching.)

Dhamini is starting to show. Yami orders the royal cloth makers of Suryalok to make the most comfortable clothes for her. In one day they makes hundreds of clothes for the new mother to be.

Devi Chayya is keeping a keen eye on her eating. Whenever Dhamini refuses to eat something, she hands her a small bowl full of things that makes Dhamini's mouth water. The older woman stares at her with kind eyes and bright smile and lays her head on her shoulder. "Oh, my dear. Oh, my brave girl. You should eat up. You're eating for two!"

(Yeah and doesn't everyone knows it. Even Yam does. Now stop this overacting. )

Surya court is not spared from this topic either. Both Yam and Shani are called often in the court to discuss important things, but the course of the discussion always takes turn into the discussion about parenthood. Suryadev recalls the days when he had his children for the first time with Devi Sangya, his mistakes with Shani and requests him not to repeat the same mistake with his son.

(Yam knows from his childhood who did right and who did wrong. He can't imagine arrival of a child can change everything overnight.)

That day they are discussing about Ravan's attacks on Indralok. The joint force of Indradev and Suryadev managed to defeat Ravan, but is only a temporary solution. As Ravan's undefeatable son keeps growing, his power seems to grow stronger day by day.

Yam tries his best to give a permanant solution in the problem. He proposes to eliminate the root of the problem- Ravan's son.

"As the God of death, I offer to bring the soul of Ravan's son to Yamlok." Yam proposes, "I can assure you that, in the absence of his son, Ravan will begin to lose his power."

"Yam is right." Indradev seconds him

"But, it means, the child will die." Shani shakes his disapporovingly, "No Yam, you can't take a life of a child."

"But..." Yam can't take Shani's arrogance anymore. "You always talk big. But you can't give any real solution to a problem. Because Ravan's son is undefeatable, Ravan gains his confidence to attack us again and again. You talk about Kramafal, but where is your justice now?"

"It is Ravan's karma, Yam." Shani stands from his seat, his dand suddenly makes appearance in his hand, "I can't punish a child for his father's karma."

"I control death, Shani." Yam summons his mace too, "You can't stop me from doing my karma. "

"Yam...: Suryadev stands up from his throne and walks between his two sons. "Stop. I don't want my sons fighting with each other in front of me."

Shani let his dand disappear. Yam keeps holding his mace.

"I am offering the reasonable solution to our problem." He says stubbornly.

"Yam..." Suryadev finally loses his temper, "I have enough of your stupidity. I agree with Shani, killing a child is not a work of dharma."

"Fine." Yam let his mace disappear, and throws a fiery glare at his brother, "You win. But remember you can't stop me from doing my karma."

He turned on his heels and storms out of the courtroom.

(Yam has enough. He is finally at the brink of his sanity. Why does Shani gets everything before him- mother's love, father's admiration, Mhadev's boon, a wife, and now a child? Isn't he the older one? He hates Shani, for everything he gained. He believes Shani hates him too. )

But he was terribly wrong. He realizes his mistake, when he finally finds himself imprisoned in Ravan's dungeons, as Ravan takes over Yamlok and frees the souls. Those souls he punished for their bad deeds in the earth, come back to seek their revenge on him.

He hears Ravan's evil laugh as the unsatisfied souls come to taunt his consciousness. Falling in the endless pit of fear and guilt, he remembers his past, his karmas, for the deeds he punished people after their death, and now they come to punish him for his karma. For one moment he wishes to die again.

Right then he feels the energy kept him imprisoned disappearing. In the darkness of the endless pit of Ravan's dungeon, he sees Shani, and the blue glow of his dand.

Shani comes to save him again.

(He hates him for this too.)

"Run, Yam." Shani shouts as the unsatisfied souls gather around their new pray.

Finally an eternity later, the joint forces of Indradev and Suryadev come to rescue them.

(And they loose Shani.)

For the first time Yam feels extremely guilty standing infront of Dhamini. He despises both Shani and his wife, but today he feels ashamed.

"He came to save me. He bites his lip as he watches Dhamini looking at the unconscious face of her husband. Her one hand is touching her bulging stomach protectively.

(If Dhamini wants to kill him now, he will not stop her.)

Dhamini does not say anything. She simply walks near him, and hugs him tightly. "You are brave too Yam. I am so proud of both of you."

(Yam wishes Dhamini does not say such a thing. At least not from her heart.)

He runs a hand across his weary face and hugs her back. "I am so sorry, Dhamini."

She doesn't say anything. Instead, she just smiles tightly and ignores the pain in her heart.

To be continued...

(In one myth, Ravan attacked Yamlok and released all the unsatisfied soul, and imprisoned Yamdev. This story is very popular in our area)

Chapter 3

Four and a half months into her pregnancy, and Dhamini is tired being bound by different kinds of rules everyday. Devi Chayya and Yami follow her everywhere like two guardian angels. Now Dhamini is at the brink of her sanity being watched over day and night.

So she calls Kakol aside, and asks him if he can take her somewhere for a bit of fresh air.

"Of course, Devi." Kakol jumps with excitement. He always likes Shani's wife. They developed a bond since the day he helped Shani to rescue her from the monster. He is ready to carry her around anytime. He stoops downs and soon transforms himself into a large crow.

"Jump over my back." He calls her.

Dhamini looks around making sure that no one is following her, then carefully rides on Kakol's back and is startled by a sudden jolt in her stomach. Her eyes snap open and she lets out a choked gasp, hands instinctively going to her stomach. She slides down from Kakol's back, and sits on the ground.

"Dhamini..." Kakol transforms back into his human form and walks near Dhamini. She is still sitting on the ground holding her stomach. She takes deep breaths and counts to ten.

And then she feels it again- the sensation of being kicked by a tiny foot that belongs to the tiny being in her body.

She lets out a small giggle and the baby kicks again.

"Are you alright?" Kakol is surprised to see the sudden change in her expression. Worry crosses his face as He peers at her and asks, "Do I need to call Shani?

Dhamini bits her lips, and shakes her head, "No, Kakol. I am alright. Just come here."

Kakol hesitantly sits beside Dhamini and she takes one of his hands and places on her stomach. "Feel it."

The baby kicks again.

"Is it..." His eyes widens with surprise.

"Yes, Kakol." Dhamini laughs with glee until she starts to cry, "Our little Shani is already as restless as its father."

Kakols feels it too. And he can't wait to give this little brat a ride on his back.

Peace is never a persistent thing in the Surya family. And the blow finally comes six months after Yam's capture and Ravan's apparent defeat.

Indradev comes running in the Surya court in the middle of the night, his silver crown missing and his eyes wide with fear. He is bleeding all over the place. Everyone is shocked when the mighty king of Devas falls unconscious at the feet of Suryadev. Suryadev calls the servants to tend the king of Gods, and after several hours he finally gains consciousness.

And the story he tells is horrible.

Ravan has finally takes over the throne of Indralok, killing all of the Deva soldiers. He announces himself as the king of Gods and announces his son Indrajit as his successor.

His story makes even someone calm like Shani to lose his temper. "This is enough." He says, summoning his dand finally. "It is time for get Ravan his Karmafal."

Yam and Suryadev also second him too. An army makes their way towards Indralok.

Shani begins to have a strange promotion that this war will not end up well.

And his promotion proves to be right.

Ravan defeats their soldiers one by one, and laughs out loudly, "You can't defeat me, Shani. You know that my son has power of all of the nine planets. He is undefeatable. And being his father, I am undefeatable too."

"But he is not immortal..." Yam wields his mace, but is soon thrown on the ground by Ravan. Shani remains clam until this point, but watching Yam being tortured by Ravan, he can't hold back his temper. He wields his dand to give Ravan his deserved punishment.

Right then the trick happens. Ravan summons his child into his arms.

"If you have heart to kill an innocent child, then do it Shani." Ravan holds little Indrajit as his shield, "Let me see the power of your Dharma."

Shani summons all of his mental strength to strike Ravan with his dand. He has enough with him. He needs end this by becoming his Dandnayak avatar. Then his eyes moves to the face of little Indrajit, clutching his father's clothes watching the angry Shanidev ready to strike his father with his dand.

And Shani's heart breaks and wrenches and he feels a sinking sensation in his stomach when he sees the little boy's bottom lip tremble. His small knuckles brush against his eyes and he meets Shani's gaze with his own. Shani sucks in a deep breath and his lowers his dand automatically.

Hey, Mahadev. What is he thinking?

He can't strike this child to punish his father. What if it was his child standing here instead of this Ravanputra, could he do such a thing? What if his child grows up to hate him and does things to spite him? What if he ends up killing an innocent child who has power out of his control? Just like Bhadra?

He takes wild deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself down.

He can't do this.

"So, even the mighty Karmafaldata gets confused..." He hears Ravan's evil laughter. He looses his temper again.

"Beware, Ravan." He yells, casting his distri on the evil Rakasha king. "I am not weak. And I will make sure that you get destroyed." His dristi on Ravan becomes more intense.

Ravan cries in pain. Watching his father's agony, Indrajit begins to cry.

"No," Shani closes his eyes and turns back. He can't do this. He can't make a child cry.

"Shani?" Yam calls out worriedly.

Behind them Suryadev yells towards them as he wields his weapon again and begins to burn Ravan's soldiers. "You go, Shani. I will take care of them."

Yam rubs Shani's shoulder and guides him out of the battlefield.

"I am sorry." Shani keeps looking at the ground. For the first time he let his family down because of his weakness.

( Shani has never taken to failure well but this...this is one failure that Shani can't stomach the thought of.)

They don't speak. Dhamini tries to say something, anything, but every time she opens her mouth, she looks at his face and she falls silent.

She feels guilty and she doesn't know why. She wants him distraction free. She wants him to concentrate on doing his duty. If she knew their child can distract his mind from doing his duty, she will never let him being so attached with her. She will accept being childless forever.

"I am..." she takes a deep breath. "I am so sorry. "

Shani is staring at her bulging stomach and his eyes snap up to meet hers when her voice and apology reaches his ears. "No." He tells her, his voice deep and so tired. "Don't be. It's my fault that I suddenly lost control."

(Her heart breaks with those last words.)

Detachment protects him. Yes, it is a part of his nature, but it hurts her when she sees him stuggling with his emotions. He has a sensitive heart beneath his iron mask, but he is not well accustomed to handle it.

She somehow isn't surprised that he follows her into bed.

She is surprised by how fast she falls asleep.

She most certainly is surprised when she wakes up four hours later to a dark room and to her husband caressing her stomach. His large hands span across her belly, caressing her taunt skin and she feels the baby moving, kick after kick. Shani continues to talk, his voice low, lips hovering over her stomach.

She doesn't know what he's saying; he's speaking rapidly, something about karma and karmafal at one point, And then he says the words that make Dhamini's breath catch in her throat. "Don't think attachment as your weakness, child, it is the strength which will make you stronger."

(Fourteen words, when on their own, mean nothing, but together, put together by Shani and said by Shani, mean everything.)

She runs her fingers through his inky black curls and he sighs, his breath fluttering against her skin.

The baby kicks in response.
