Amala Akkineni writes a powerful open letter

Indian news channels went berserk giving the untimely death of superstar Sridevi a blanket coverage. Some came under heavy fire after they foolishly tried to reconstruct the final moments of Sridevi after the postmortem report claimed she died of accidental drowning in her bathtub in her Dubai hotel room. In the wall to wall coverage of the tragic passing of the movie icon, a section of media even debated over her life choices, including how she managed to look so young and glamorous even at 54.

Not just Sridevi, all celebrities come under heavy social pressure to look as flawless as they look on the big screen. They are not allowed to show any signs of aging forcing them to make some life-defining cosmetic choices.

Actor Amala Akkineni has written an open letter lamenting the drawbacks of the stardom where she is not allowed to enjoy the luxury of "aging gracefully. "Will you let me stop colouring my hair, let me wear it short, without referring to my long tresses in Pushpak, at 19? The bad hair days get captured, not the wisdom I carry, and that's demoralizing. Surely cameras can show the depth of a person and not just the surface?, Amala writes about the social pressure she is under to look always young.

She goes on to rue, "You have caught me in a time warp, a cage of fame, while my spirit is free. Allow me a life, some privacy, to engage with humanity and the universe, with purpose, truth, compassion and some respect for those now gone.

Here is the full text of her letter:

Will you let me age gracefully?

Will you let me age gracefully without needing to comment on how tired I look or the weight I have gained?
The shadows under my eyes are from reading glass lines and freckles change to age spots everyday.

Will you let me dress without feeling low self esteem that I am not size zero anymore, nor that I wear the season's couture?
A washed handloom engulfs me providing market to the looms, comfortably accommodating menopause.

Will you let me stop colouring my hair, let me wear it short, without referring to my long tresses in Pushpak, at 19?
The bad hair days get captured, not the wisdom I carry, and that's demoralizing. Surely cameras can show the depth of a person and not just the surface?

Will you let me discuss meaningful things without interrupting the flow with questions on how I cook or what the season's latest gossip demands?
My inner being thrives on accomplishing things that make a difference, things I seek to complete before my physical form is put to rest.

Will you let me walk through my day with peace and calm without the endless messages to attend events teeming with emptiness?
I need to complete life's mission, but I can't if my head spins in endless carousels, important to you, no doubt.

Will you free me of the box office madness, the TRP wars, Page 3, the likes, the comments, the traps that menacingly surround everything we do?
You have caught me in a time warp, a cage of fame, while my spirit is free.
Allow me a life, some privacy, to engage with humanity and the universe, with purpose, truth, compassion and some respect for those now gone.

That she is

But is she kidding?

That open letter is quite a babble...

People should be charged stamp money (in thousands) for open letters, they will stop writing it 😛

She is blaming the public? What does she mean by "Will you let me"?

Evoking her movie "Pushpak" and reminding everybody her best work

Is she trying to stay relevant and in the news?

I get what she is saying.
Actresses come under heavy pressure to always look flawless as that is what is expected from actresses to always look good.
Not everyone can do that as they age..!
To always be expected to look young and beautiful is very pressurising

she need not try to.
She is currently a social worker, she does a lot of charity stuff, pretty much relevant in the state she lives.
U people can't see beyond plastic beauties of Bollywood it's not her problem. She is happy doing what she likes.

Now I don't know if she really means what she said here or just trying to gain some limelight. I have no way to tell .. because I've never seen any of her work nor do I know her personality.
But whatever she said is actually worth discussing. I understand that no one has forced actors to look a certain way, they make their own bed. But I think this whole wanting to look younger, thinner, fairer thing is pretty common in girls of all ages. Of course, some men do this too. But if this comes at the cost of someone's health, then is it fair?

I don't like seeing plastic beauties of BW or any place, I think Amala is pretty just don't like the tone of the open letter
Is this letter as a result of Sri' death? Is she saying she died bcz of people unreasonable expectations regarding beauty? So it's public's fault?

Nowadays everything is other's and society's fault 100%

Amala is not acting anymore... She is not dependent on her looks for livelihood

Why is she complaining "she isn't allowed the luxury of aging gracefully"?

Who is she afraid of? Online warriors? Comment on SNS? Or her husband? His constant affair rumors?

Why doesn't she set an example and does exactly that? If she is already doing that then fine

While I do understand what she is saying...the society puts a lot of pressure on girls and women to look good... One of my punjabi friend visit a saloon to get her make up done before any family function, it seems their relatives think low of her if her makeup isnt in place.

But the trp n box office priority for celebs is cause the Industry is build that way... Its business and not everyone will be in it just for creative satisfaction... However there are a few people who care damn for the setup and carve their own path... For ex, look at Nana Patekar... he doesnt care for his image, even now he lives in his 1 BHK flat and donates whatever money he earns after just keeping little for his day to day expenses...

But yea, even in this age, she is so so pretty...☺️

I think she is talking on behalf of all the female celebs...esp after the debate about Sridevi and her so many plastic surgeries, maybe this might have made her to write this letter...
