Padmaavat suffered two fatal flaws.
1) Over the top villainy of Allaudin Khilji.
2) The glorious Jauhar sequence at the end

Khilji aside, if the film had just reshot the ending to be less dramatic and more matter of fact - there would be much less to criticize about.

In general I can't stand anything about Barkha... but she makes several valid points here. SLB has the right to make a movie about whatever he wants and have the freedom to show it to anyone who wants to see it but I wish he had chosen a different subject to use his talent on, and if he had to make it, not to outright glorify women sacrificing their entire lives based on the threat of possible rape by (gasp) Muslims. Lets not even go into how truly voluntary the sacrifice was (did these women really have any option to refuse to commit Jauhar when it was the societal expectation that they would - we know for a fact sati was not always voluntary) or how much the claims of what the conquerors would do to them was true vs how much was propaganda.
Women can and do go on to have fulfilling lives after being assaulted (sexually or otherwise), after escaping abusive marriages or fathers, after acid attacks, after terrible things including rapes and forced prostitution. This film delivers a message about the (very limited and masculine defined) worth and role of women I would rather my daughters generation not be receiving.

The movie gave way too much emphasis on the last scene.. it seemed like a never ending moment in slow mention with DP decked out in bright clothes and her high lighted hair flying in the air.
